Sawsage if you read my post again, there were no caustic comments aimed at Captain Tom. I consider him to have been a fine man, a gentleman, and I still stand by my comment about Johnson hopefully combing his hair, have some respect man! I do hope that the family are left to grieve in private; he was their Father and a Grandfather.

You were an inspiration to everyone, god bless you Captain Tom May you rest in peace.

He inspired an awful lot of people in both their person and public views. The money he managed to raise was magnificent. One issue I have never heard mentioned is that with all nations in the UK having their own NHS will the finds raised be applied to the NHS charitable organisations within all 4 services. We need a lot more Captain Toms.

Why the need to take a swipe at Boris on this thread. If he didn’t put in appearance This evening imagine the comments that would provoke

Such sad news.
I say he should be commemorated on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square

I agree Lynn1959,
Not just a kind and courageous man but a symbol of hope
‘Tomorrow will be a good day’.

Lemsip - Thank you for putting my the record straight.

GillT57 - no need for your caustic comments at this time.

He was 100 and died of pneumonia not Covid.

Cpt Tom. Thank you and rest in peace.

Just heard that Boris is to ‘lead’ a national clap for Sir Tom at 6pm tonight.
Never let it be said that Boris lets a good photo opportunity go to waste.

Indeed. Maybe he will have the courtesy to comb his bloody hair for once, out of respect.

Yes, awfully sad news and I have shed a few tears for this lovely gentleman. Believe Boris Johnson is going to have a 6.00pm clap for him tonight and I will be out. RIP Captain Tom, may God rest your soul.

Captain Tom - you were - and are - an example to us all; lifted our spirits at a time we most needed it; and your efforts are still making a real difference to people. Thank you.

Every now and then someone you don’t know comes into your life and touches your heart. I’m genuinely very upset at this wonderful mans passing. Tomorrow will be a better day

Captain Tom Moore's family forced to address criticism over Barbados holiday after cruel trolling.

Trolls alive and well on gransnet also.

The statement said doctors were consulted before Sir Tom and his family flew to Barbados on December 11. This was before Bedford was placed into Tier 3 on December 19 and later Tier 4 on December 20. He returned to the UK on January 6."

British Airways flew Captain Sir Tom Moore and his family to Barbados in December, a trip he said was on his "bucket list".

R.I.P Sir Tom, a true gentleman and an inspiration to all.

Let’s simply celebrate a life well lived, a man who served his country in WW2 and in the final stages of his life.
Why the need to question the presence of his family at the end of his life.

Blinko Wed 03-Feb-21 12:44:10

What an amazing final year of his life. He certainly made the most of the time he had left. To the benefit of us all in one way or another.

I was wondering the same thing regarding visiting relatives.

As I understood it he was not positive for Covid, or at least not known to be positive, when he went in to hospital. He went in because he had pneumonia. He was being given palliative care. I would think that in these circumstances relatives would be able, indeed encouraged, to be with patients. I cannot imagine what the rules would be once they discovered he was positive but I imagine the staff just did there best - as they have done for everyone in their care.

Theoddbird Wed 03-Feb-21 12:26:35

His very special soul is flying free. He has inspired us all over the past year with his walk and his wise words xxx

Yorki Wed 03-Feb-21 12:18:35

Catta5... I was wondering the same thing regarding visiting relatives. But I expect with him being a very public figure, the hospital staff wouldn't have been able to do right for wrong. Can you imagine the uproar it would've caused if his family hadn't been allowed to visit, could the hospital have coped with all the bad press and constant harassment at such a critical time re: covid. I don't think they had any choice, they were in a no win situation. As to the choice of allowing his family to take him away at Christmas, they were probably warned of the dangers, but did it anyway, so I expect they might now be regretting that decision. Who knows, but I'm glad I haven't got that on my conscious. That's why, however hard it might be, we must adhere to the covid rules, and this proves the point. Plus Sir Cpt Tom didn't have age on his side. He probably begged them to take him out for a while. But no ones been a winner at this sad time. We can just remember him for his bravery and incredible achievements. I believe his name will go down in history.

He served his country to the end. What more fitting tribute, that he be remembered by future generations , than by nameing a hospital after him.
