A true gentleman. God bless him and his family. Sad news today.

Rest in peace Sir Captain Tom.
A long life, well lived from all I’ve read.
Thanks vegansrock for posting the piece by Gaby Hinchcliffe. It reflects the feelings so many of us have.

“The 100-year-old former soldier, and his indomitable efforts to raise money for NHS charities, by making laps of his garden on a walking frame, were a rare ray of light in last year’s gloom. It was his optimism, as much as the quiet stoicism often found in war veterans who have seen what he must have seen, that captured imaginations. His constant refrain that the sun would eventually come out, that tomorrow would be better, that together we could achieve miracles, resonated at a time when people sorely needed to hear it. But he also did something invaluable to shift perceptions of older people and their place in society, during a pandemic that saw some ugly prejudices about the value of older people’s lives compared with younger ones spill into the open. He was physically frail, yet evidently had so much to give. In his determination and his selflessness, he put many people a fraction of his age to shame. To watch him take those last effortful steps of his sponsored walk, accompanied towards the end by a guard of honour made up by serving soldiers, was to see the years peel back and reveal the younger man he must have been and still remained.” This is an extract from a piece I’ve just read from Gaby Hinchcliffe, which sums up why he became an icon.

Rest in peace Sir Tom.
We are all so proud of you.(flowers)

Me too Eleothan. I thought maybe it was because of what he symbolised, hope, positivity, graciousness, spirit, courage and so much more.

Yes, I was surprisingly upset for someone not known to me personally. I know he was elderly but it seemed such a shame that he didn't have more time to enjoy his well deserved fame.

Urmstongran Tue 02-Feb-21 22:46:39

He dedicated his last year to raise money for the workers of the NHS, who put their lives at risk, to care for others, in the midst of a dangerous pandemic with no effective treatment or vaccine.

Dear Captain Sir Tom. May angels sing thee to thy rest.

RIP Sir Tom. You have inspired us with your determination and outlook on life. May some of your kindness rub off on each one of us.

I agree with your opinion Daddima that Tom Moore raised a great sum of money for charity and the fact that he was quite so elderly when he did that endeared him to the nation.

It is not right for anyone to 'appropriate' his achievement or to start subtly changing its purpose by implying it was 'for the NHS' rather than "for NHS charities". It does matter.

Very sad news. A true gentleman too. RIP Captain Tom. I’m so pleased he was able to fulfil his wish to visit Barbados.

Rest in peace Sir Tomflowers

Sodapop, I am not criticising him, and not at all annoyed by what he did. It’s merely the acceptance that our NHS could be funded by private individuals, as that is how it is being reported in many places.

oliversnana Tue 02-Feb-21 20:03:03

I agree a hero to the end RIP

sodapop Tue 02-Feb-21 19:57:42

I think it was for the NHS by extension Daddima certainly nothing to be annoyed about I wouldn't have thought.
It's a shame to bring this sort of criticism to the last day of a kind man and true gentleman.

Daddima Tue 02-Feb-21 19:30:21

I don’t know anything about him, other than what I’ve read in the media, but feel annoyed at people ( including Boris Johnson ) saying he raised money for the NHS. The NHS is not a charity, and Sir Tom raised money for charities which provided support for NHS staff and volunteers. I’m sure I read that the money had provided leisure facilities, rest rooms, ipads etc for front line staff. A good cause, but not funding for the NHS proper.

Such a positive character just when we needed it. What a life and what a way to bring it to an amazing end.

HurdyGurdy Tue 02-Feb-21 18:54:41

Goodnight Sir Captain Tom. Rest in Peace.

What a wonderful final year he lived, packing so much into it, on top of an already packed life.

How cruel that the very illness that brought him to the world's attention, is the one that took him.

Shinamae Tue 02-Feb-21 18:53:11

Very sad but what a legacy....????
