So sad to have succumbed to this awful virus. A wonderful man, they don’t make them like that any more. RIP. Captain Tom.
I think he died "with" it rather than "of" it Shropshirelass.

I think what he really succumbed to was pneumonia, that was why he was hospitalised for help with his breathing, then while in hospital he got CoVid. Who knows whether he might have recovered from the pneumonia, but at 100 he might not have done.

Just let us not, no matter how much we admire Captain Tom, let him morph into Boris Johnson's Princess Diana.
RIP a wonderful man such a shining example to all an inspiration .
I wonder how many people knew this:
The statement also revealed Sir Tom had been receiving treatment for prostate and skin cancer for the last five years but, with the help of his medical team, had made the decision not to have invasive treatment.
I ask because I didn't and I feel it makes this last year and what he did, even more amazing.

A lovely, positive chap and yes, an inspiration. He seemed somewhat bemused, though, as the vast media machine picked him up and carried him out - into the public spotlight. He had a wonderful final year.
Yes, ElaineRI55, it was quite obviously that annoying 'all in it together' thing, along with all the clapping - a desperate attempt to counteract reality with much-needed good news.
It doesn't work though does it? We see through it so easily. Of course we're not all in the same boat.
A truly inspirational man .....I loved his outlook on life 'Tomorrow will be a good day'...God bless him and his family and thankyou, Captain Sir Tom,for your selfless act x Condolences to his family

catta5 you are very brave. I had a post taken down (before he died) for asking the same thing as it " wasn't in the spirit" or something.
Rather than brave I think it was a little misguided as the doctors had been consulted about him going and I cannot believe that checks weren't made to ensure no rules were broken. It was certainly still "legal" when he went.
No such comments can take away from him the "spirit" he imbued in the nation or how much he brought everyone together. No need to delete the post, just put the truth out there with it.

100 years of a truly wonderful gentleman. Bless him.xx

Captain Tom was a courageous and inspirational man who definitely helped to raise people's spirits.
I do think, however, that some of the media attention was used to attempt to engender a "wartime camaraderie/we're all in this together" feeling to deflect from the government's mishandling of the Covid pandemic.
I think any tribute by Boris is fairly hypocritical, given his cavalier attitude, desire to privatise the NHS, and lack of repect shown to everyone ( including via his deliberately messed up hair).
I'll now go and hide behind the barracades!
This isn't the first time Mr Johnson has tried to use what was an appropriate and heartfelt act at the time, started (and ended) by a member of the public. I wish he would stop the jumping on bandwagons. I do not want to be told to clap by a politician. I will find my own way to think about Captain Tom, thank you very much. If anyone is interested in another way this is the address of the Captain Tom Foundation captaintom.org/
Equally both politicians and the media have, as you commented ElaineRI55, tried to jump on the war-time record of that generation. This is not a war. We are not standing up against an immoral regime. The key workers deserve every bit of praise but there job has not been made more difficult by other people trying to kill them but by a virus and a government and it's supporters not believing in the greater good and running down the public services. The post war mixed economy has been swung back to a market centric economy by the Conservatives for years, noticeably since Thatcher, and that is what has made this crisis - not war - so difficult to tackle.
R I p sir tom a lovely lovely man. He made us think we can get through this bless him and his family xx
So sad, someone who uplifted us all and encouraged us to look forward.
RIP SIR TOM.A GOOD MAN.
I am shocked and saddened that some people are using this thread as a political platform to ‘get at’ Boris Johnson. This is not the place to do so whatever your feelings about him. This is about recording our condolences and respect for an incredible individual.
'The skies will be blue, and the sun will shine on you again.'
'Tomorrow will be a better day than today.'
'People say this is terrible- it isn't. '
Just a few of the inspirational things this brave gentleman said. He was typical of a generation that went through so much - born so soon after a world war, lived through the depression, fought another war, lost friends, family, homes - and suffered such hard times. My own parents who would now be over a hundred years old were of the same resolute and cheerful disposition. God Bless Sir Tom - he lifted us up, and we must remember his words.
suttonJ not an appropriate comment at this time re Boris Johnson. We are celebrating the life and paying our respects to Captain Tom, an inspirational man who has achieved so much in his life and even at such a great age only wanted to help other people.

Why the need to take a swipe at Boris on this thread. If he didn’t put in appearance This evening imagine the comments that would provoke
It was HIS idea! Why is he coming up with ideas that entail everyone coming out of their houses en-masse at the same moment when we're supposed to be staying in as much as possible? Why didn't he suggest a moment's prayer or quiet reflection indoors at 6pm. I mean it's not like Sir Tom can hear us clapping, he's far more likely to be able to feel our prayers.

Boris dies - need a hairbrush- save the NHS
Hopefully the Shuttleworth collection will have a display in Sir Captain Tom's honour
I think Mr Johnson just has that kind of hair that has a will of its own - a bit like mine at the moment.
However, not to detract from the theme of this thread, yes Captain Sir Tom, rest in peace and thank you. You were a special person indeed.
