Hilarious parish council zoom meeting

I think the whole point is that we’ve all seen so many zoom interviews etc over the past few months and how many of us have wanted to just switch someone off so many times. She was fulfilling my fantasy.

I didn't find it remotely funny and I am truly appalled that it has "gone viral". We don't know the back story. We don't know what happened to cause this escalation in temper and we don't know what the conclusion was. All we have is a snap shot of an entire meeting. Meetings like this are not uncommon, but are made so much harder when done via zoom. No one would have heard of any of this had it not been for Covid. The men in it didn't ask to be vilified or turned into laughing stocks by people who neither knew nor cared what they did. My DH belongs to a large voluntary organisation. Members do not always get on. There are differing opinions and views and tempers can flare. But the good of the cause they are serving usually prevails. All these people are, I suspect, volunteers. They give their time, energy and support freely. If they decide, as a result of this social media frenzy to stand down, I doubt there will be a queue of people waiting to take their places.

These are the people running our village and town councils. If they cannot be polite to each other how do they reach a conclusion never mind an agreement?
How do they come across at county level or are their meetings the same shambles. I used to live in a village where one of the local Dr's got voted on but soon left when he realised he was never going to be given a say.

No wonder it always takes ages for some parish councils to make decisions if they are made up of these sorts of boring old twits who are more interested in hearing their own twaddle than taking part in reasonable debate. Idiots!!!

Where was the agenda for this meeting? All Parish Councils are required by law to post the agenda on the parish notice board three weeks before the meeting. The Chairman should then control the meeting by following the agenda item by item. As a former secretary both at work and on committees, I know that nothing is finally decided unless this is done. Incidentally, Parish Councillors do not get paid. District Councillors receive quite generous expenses. All are elected.

I've only seen the evening news clip yesterday, it was amusing and at first I wondered if it was even real. No better than small boys fighting in the playground! But to think that those childish and aggressive idiots were elected to serve the people of the Parish and make decisions that affect the community is a very sobering thought. No wonder council processes are so painfully slow and ineffective. Those men should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. The next council elections could be interesting though!

Football focus today mixed parts of it with the FF presenters, v good. I assume the BBC had to pay to use it, I wonder if it was the youngster who recorded the meeting and published it got the money?

he was a nasty piece of work. I thought she was acting illegally and overruling the Chairman which, of course, is very wrong for a Clerk to do but I now realise she had been sent in to sort them out.

The trouble with these committees is that they are usually headed up with people who have little power elsewhere in their lives so they wield it like a weapon. I could see that as a tv comedy, it might be hilarious but these are people who have a certain amount of influence as to what happens in their Parish; that is worrying. When you look at how many people actually say that they have come across this sort of behaviour lots of times within this sort of framework, it is no wonder that this country is in such a mess.

The only bit that made me smile was when the Chair told her that she couldn't eject him from the meeting and she promptly did. The look on her face was pure gold.

I do understand why some of you feel uncomfortable with it but I think that is why I found it so funny I moved to a rural idyllic village, somewhere where people want to live, and was promptly signed up for some committee and the amount of bitching and backstabbing was unbelievable. I was the target for some abuse myself but held my own and received an apology but another woman was treated appallingly. Another of my friends was voted for parish councillor and similar happened to scenarios described here, newbies upset the apple cart and all hell broke loose. Neither of us live in the village anymore It isn't all villages as I live in a lovely village now and was brought up in a lovely one too! but there does seem to be a distinct lack of life experience amongst some people and a massive dose of self interest going on. I always thought people went into 'politics' because they had an interest in making things better, I have quickly come to realise recently that it doesn't matter what 'side' you are on, a lot of the people representing us are looking out for themselves and their own business interests and this starts at very low level, town councillors etc. It is awful really.

I’ve just watched it on the link given by Gagajo and I was cringing. Even after those two very aggressive men had been ejected the meeting went nowhere. What was the agenda? It seemed to be a lot of amateurs speaking gobbledegook. By the way, I’ve been on a couple of committees and they’re all a bit like that, although we did actually achieve some of the aims I had to leave as I couldn’t take it seriously.

I was Clerk to a board of school governors for a while, no behaviour such as was published here I hasten to add, but when I left, they were still arguing/debating exactly the same things as when I started, so to be honest, I wasn't confident of such committees achieving very much.

It was so "Vicar of Dibley". Hilarious how parochial these meetings are.

Jackie Weaver was on The Last Leg last night, and was very quick witted and funny.

She has become, and will remain, as my younger workmates say, a legend.
