Gets really 'good' at about 4 minutes.

WHY did they publish it?!

I don't think it is like that in NQ, nanna8 but I can't say for sure. The local councillor for the area I know is well respected. The Councillors establish the strategy and guidelines and the Council employees carry out the work, much like here.

Parish Councils do not have the power that larger Councils have so perhaps that is why the Councillors feel the need to establish their power base.

I need to correct my previous post. The next elections to be held in Cheshire East are in 2023, and I assume that this includes Parish and Town Councils, elections for which are normally held at the same time as Borough Council elections/

I texted my daughter about this video as she lives in Cheshire East and she suggested I watch The Last Leg on C4 on which Jackie Weaver was a guest (via Zoom, what else?!) and she gave a good account of herself.

Jacki Weaver is a well known and much loved actress here in Australia so at first I was horrified to think it was about her!

Yes, I’ve just watched it. It was brilliant. Needs to be watched right to the end, though.

The thing is, we pay them out of out council tax and they have powers and sway on no end of local matters.

These aren't exciting things - the use of village halls for example, allottments, playgrounds, hedges and verges, parking and rights of way - but necessaryand with quite a lot of local impact. They are involved in numerous consultations with those "higher up" the government ladder and are influencing planning all the time. This influence is a big thing as far as I'm concerned.

They are working for us ostensibly - but some are actually too busy polishing their own egos. Some, unfortunately are benefitting indirectly from their position.

Loved her wry sense of humour.

Jaxjacky Sat 06-Feb-21 08:28:38

We watched the Last Leg, Jackie held her own well and was very quick.

BlueBelle Sat 06-Feb-21 08:42:37

I didn’t actually find it funny I must have a different sense of humour I found it irritatingly boring and disgracefully badly put together meeting but I wasn’t exactly splitting my sides
I d say start again with some younger blood

The zoom vid was leaked by local political activists , or so I read.
Jackie Weaver was brought in to bring some order and she did. She’d no idea the video would be leaked. Unsurprisingly, the three aggressive men continue to maintain JW had no authority. I expect we will see that printed of T shirts

An opportune time to Zoom in on this Committee Prayer again! grin

The Committee
Oh give me your pity, I'm on a committee
Which meets from morning to night
We attend and amend and contend and defend
Without a conclusion in sight.

We confer and concur, we defer and demur
And reiterate all of our thoughts,
We revise the agenda with frequent addenda
And consider a load of reports.

We compose and propose, we suppose and oppose
And points of procedure are fun
But though various notions are brought up as motions
There's terribly little gets done.

We resolve and absolve, but we never dissolve,
Since it's out of the question for us,
What a shattering pity to end our committee
Where else could we make such a fuss?

I’ve still got my Lady Hale spider t-shirt.

rafichagran Sat 06-Feb-21 09:26:29

The men on the video were boorish and unpleasant, Jackie Weaver needed to take control of that meeting.

Dylant1234 Sat 06-Feb-21 10:06:50

The funniest moment was when one guy said “you can’t remove me” which Jackie Weaver promptly did by switching off his screen presence ?.

NellG Sat 06-Feb-21 10:12:25

Rufus2 That's brilliant! grin

Notspaghetti Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Parish Councillor was an unpaid position?

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 06-Feb-21 10:12:41

The Parish Council in my village went through massive upheavals a few years ago. The same people had been on it for years and then there was an influx of new people. Cue massive arguments and even poison pen letters sent to every householder! So, the old members resigned and more new people were elected. It appeared that there had been all sorts of underhand stuff going on with large sums of money being unearthed that should have been used for the village. It is now. I went to a meeting of the ‘original’ council and it was a nightmare. Within minutes a member of public was in tears because her husband - the Chairman - hadn’t been thanked sufficiently for his work. There are always plenty of people willing to volunteer for these sorts of jobs, but are they just in it for their own ends?

Chewbacca Sat 06-Feb-21 10:25:19

NellG There is no salary for being a councillor. However, you will be paid an allowance to reimburse you for time and expenses incurred whilst on council business.

Lovetopaint037 Sat 06-Feb-21 10:49:24

I only saw it as tv news items. Couldn’t figure what it was really about and didn’t make me laugh or even smile.

NellG Sat 06-Feb-21 10:55:58

Thanks Chewbacca. Not sure they could pay me enough to be dealing with the kind of people in that video!

annifrance Sat 06-Feb-21 10:56:13

Absolutely typical of parochial committees. In our village lived a deeply unpleasant man who took great delight in being very objectionable and horrid to others. most of the village loathed him, it was a very close community with lots of different clubs and societies. he was always as awkward as he could be and the village only put up with him because of his really lovely wife.

The parish council had a fund to help a villager with a worthwhile project. Some years ago they awarded some money to a lovely disabled lad to go to China to train in his particular sport. This dreadful man caused such a stink about it. This boy went on to take Olympic silver in the London Paralympic Games and Gold in Rio. Yeah WB.

Later he took part in Strictly, during the bio about him and interview with his super Mum reduced even Claudia and Tess to tears. Revenge is a fish that is eaten cold.

annifrance Sat 06-Feb-21 11:14:59

Meant dish not fish!

NotSpaghetti Sat 06-Feb-21 11:17:26

Iam64 if you watch the video to the end they decide to publish it so “people can see it”. They discuss it.
I don’t think it was leaked.
The prequel is also online.
And the minutes too.

Sarnia Sat 06-Feb-21 11:18:37

Very funny. I suppose the men who did the bullying are keeping a low profile. My WI committee meetings are very tame compared to this.

NotSpaghetti Sat 06-Feb-21 11:21:13

I love this Revenge is a fish that is eaten cold. annifrance

ladyleftfieldlover I think I know this village!
