Illegal migrants’ amnesty vaccine.

(220 Posts)

1.3 million illegal migrants in the UK are being urged by the government to register with a GP and get the Covid vaccination - and the Home Office will ‘take no action’ if they comply.

I dare say the main role of any Government is to protect its legal citizens, therefore on the one hand this is laudable however 1.3 million people here with ‘backgrounds unknown’ is shocking. That’s 1:70 people living here! Who knew?

Now you’ve really confused me sw. You think I’m being disingenuous. I’m not. I don’t think I’m clever enough to be honest! It was a genuine question.

What am I getting wrong? If you won’t answer how can I educate myself?

The people below the radar need to be vaccinated.

There are folks here who are not registered with GP or NI or HMRC.

Whether they are waiting for asylum status, overstayed their visa or arrived in the back of a lorry. Wherever they originated from, whatever the race or religion, how would posters describe them?

Of course you are right Urmstongran. Agree with you 100%.
I suppose someone on here I could probably guess who reported this thread to GNHQ.

^There are two issues put together in this thread which should have been kept separate ie two different issues.^

Please explain sw.
I’m genuinely not with you. Sorry.

I think the issue for the government is to vaccinate as many people as possible to achieve herd immunity. However they are aware there is a cohort of people who, because they ought not to be still here or here at all, need to be found and given the vaccine. Now to my mind that must be a large tranche of the population otherwise why fuss? If it is as high as 1 person in 69 then yes, it is a concern. The government know these missing persons won’t come forward unless they can be given guaranteed anonymity. They are hoping charity groups will be able to assist in helping find these people.

What am I not understanding?

I didn’t come up in the down train Urm. I’ve said all I need to say already on this thread so don’t try goading me- it won’t work. There’s plenty of decent threads to post on without spending any more time on this one.

Yes they should be vaccinated, same as everyone.maybe if they do treat them same as the homeless they could bring them to an 'open' session for giving the vaccine,in some way? Maybe if they would make having jab for covid compulsory it would make us all rest easier.(providing its safe due to an individuals heath)

People living in the UK illegally UG

Don't be disingenuous and don't try to be cute, as my granny would say.

Exactly- disingenuity is a well used tactic on GN followed by innocent face.

Zadie In which case why have you not changed the name of this thread?

It was the use of the word ‘illegals’ lazy dehumanising language

‘Illegal migrants’ is okay though surely? That’s what they are and it’s the topic we are discussing. They are migrants who are here illegally. Genuinely confused.

Paperless people?
Hidden individuals?
Undeclared folk?

Just people then.
People the government are not aware are living here. They want to vaccinate them. And call an amnesty to be able to do it.

Yes people will be fine - even illegal migrants is lazy and the sort of lumping together of a diverse group of people which dehumanises them and encourages negative racist attitudes. There are two issues put together in this thread which should have been kept separate ie two different issues. Some of us see an agenda as to why this did not happen.

Blimey! Well done GNHQ.

Well it was all the well argued intelligent reports they received about the dehumanising language used to demean, belittle and lazily categorise a range of people who are actually are you know human beings

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Feb-21 12:28:34

Dog whistle politics.

Ever heard of it?

Today Timothy Garton Ash wrote an article about the need for a fact fightback.

“To survive, democracy needs a minimum of shared truth”

This is based on the Athenian idea of debate around the accepted and shared facts.

This thread is certainly not that.

Hi, GNHQ here flowers

We don't want to disrupt the flow of this conversation but we did want to pop on to remind everyone about our guidelines.

We also agree with those who have expressed concern re grouping people together as 'illegals' which has very negative and derogatory connotations so we'd ask that you not use phrase or similar please.

Thanks, GNHQ

As Chewbacca said it’s in everyone’s interests to have as many people as possible vaccinated. Apart from the fact that unvaccinated people will be more likely to transmit the virus, some are also more likely to be ill with the virus and that uses up health care resources that otherwise could be used for non COVID health care. Whatever the rights and wrongs of illegal immigration, it shouldn’t be relevant to the public health issue of access to the vaccine. However, I feel extremely doubtful about how likely many people in this category will be willing to come forward to be vaccinated. I expect some relevant charities could help to some extent but overall, I can’t see how it would really happen in large numbers
