What do you think of Princess Anne’s sitting room at Gatcombe Are you surprised?

Funny how Kevin McCloud always returned to those GD house with vast, bare interiors and acres of un-curtained/un-blinded glass, on lovely sunny days - never when it was cold, grey and miserable outside.

I’m not sure he always liked them, though. One house he genuinely seemed to love IIRC was the relatively very small one built entirely of natural, entirely local materials in a wood. Not a scrap of concrete anywhere!

Callistemon Tue 09-Feb-21 10:23:46

I think his own house is a comfortable farmhouse!

Kevin McCloud is so annoying on Grand Designs, the format is old and tired now.

DH still enjoys it, sodapop
hmm

JaneJudge Tue 09-Feb-21 11:23:44

Did you see last weeks grand designs when the woman doing up the mill slagged him off good and proper to the camera grin

JaneJudge Tue 09-Feb-21 11:26:02

I know Kevin has tried really hard to improve his image but every time I see him I think of that ridiculous bike wheel mobile he did on that program, was it called home front?

LauraNorder Tue 09-Feb-21 13:11:48

I noticed just how often the self builders were pregnant by the completion of the build. Kevin? I suppose you could say I have a fertile imagination.

sodapop Tue 09-Feb-21 13:21:35

Yes my husband likes it as well Callistemon I just sigh loudly when it comes on grin

Elegran Tue 09-Feb-21 13:49:08

Improving his image, LauraNorder?

Greta8 Tue 09-Feb-21 14:26:54

HAB housing, Kevin McLeod's company nearly insolvent - investors money at risk.

I feel as if I know some of them, they've been on so often sodapop!

LauraNorder perhaps some of those babies may have grown up and left home by now grin

I don't mind Kevin

I agree with a couple of others, I'm guessing that this is their TV room or snug and that they have a smart room too.
But I'm pleased to see that HRH does exactly as she wants to do, particularly in her own home.
Can't bear the carping criticism of her taste in furniture and clutter on here, I'm guessing that she doesn't give a flying f* about what anyone else thinks and good luck to her. Such a shame that she isn't the Queen's oldest child, though I'm guessing that she'd rather pass on the crown.

FarNorth Tue 09-Feb-21 15:52:44

cc even if Anne was the Queen's eldest child she would never have been first in line for the throne, thanks to male-centric inheritance rules.

sodapop Tue 09-Feb-21 17:26:31

That has changed now though hasn't it FarNorth I think I read that somewhere.

eazybee Tue 09-Feb-21 17:29:26

Princess Anne comes from the sort of family that inherits furniture, they do not buy it.

Which is another way of saying nothing is ever thrown away , simply stored in the attics until it can be used again.

midsummer70 Tue 09-Feb-21 17:36:44

Pantglas2
It looks' well lived in' and the kind of sitting room where if invited you would not feel like you needed to take your shoes off before entering.

hollysteers Tue 09-Feb-21 17:44:00

I’m not surprised at her sitting room or snug, Princess Anne is just like her father, down to earth and not trying to impress.
I’m a bit of a clutterer myself, surrounded by books etc.
Brown furniture is completely out of fashion it seems, even when a valued antique. I myself am not keen on the preponderance of grey in interior design these days.
Michael Heseltine said a gentleman was someone who did not have to buy their own furniture (I suppose that applies to ladies too?)

Callistemon Tue 09-Feb-21 17:49:26

I was trying to remember who had said that, hollysteers

He seems very posh now but I think he was from humble beginnings, his grandparents were farm labourers and dockers. His father "made good" and they became "middle class".

grannypiper Tue 09-Feb-21 17:52:41

I love Anne's living room, it looks cozy and welcoming, it is a bit cluttered but at least if dropped biscuit crumbs she wouldn't notice.

Callistemon Tue 09-Feb-21 17:53:34

He didn't say it, Alan Clark said it if him:

The trouble with Michael is that he had to buy his own furniture". The thoroughly odious Alan Clark of Michael Heseltine as reported by the Edwina Curry

Well they have their priorities right a comfy sofa and chair and a good size TV to enjoy the rugby she so enjoys and I should think other sporting events .

deefletch Tue 09-Feb-21 18:46:45

Im glad shes so down to earth, as you would expect...but what Im curious about is the fact that her husband is also there, as many years ago the press said that they were married in name only...looks like they were wrong...?

Elegran Tue 09-Feb-21 18:53:26

This is her second husband, deefletch. Perhaps what you read years ago was about the first, Anthony Armstrong Jones?

Aldom Tue 09-Feb-21 19:13:33

Princess Anne was married to Mark Phillips Princess Margaret was married to Anthony Armstrong Jones.

Elegran Tue 09-Feb-21 19:28:09

Sorry - got that wrong. Anchovy Armlong Bones was the bloke married to a princess in my youth, long ago.

LMW1 Tue 09-Feb-21 19:37:19

Not surprised at all. She is a no nonsense hard-working lady.
