I love my conservatory

I love my conservatory. It was built around 20 years ago and it's the place I love most in my house. It's so peaceful, I could sit there for hours. Even today when the snow is lying but the sun is shining and a beautiful blue sky, it's nice. I put radiator on for a little while and at the moment I am having a coffee and cake and just enjoying the moment. If others have a conservatory, do they feel the same way?

Ah, but we call them 'orangeries' round here??

grandmajet Fri 12-Feb-21 15:23:16

Mine is just a conservatory I’m afraid ixion! But yes, polomint, I do love it. We had the old plasticky roof replaced with glass a couple of years age and I love watching the sky and birds. It is at the front of the house, but shielded by shrubs - we can see people going up the road but are quite hidden from them, or so we think!

No, my dream house would not have a conservatory or log burner but it would have a good sized utility room for white goods, drying washing and keeping dog paraphernalia.

Oooh ixion I would love an orangery!
I hope you have oranges in it!

Hey, not me! Don't even have a lean to - remember those?!

My old house had a conservatory and I spent a lot of time in there. My favourite place. I don't have one now.

Oopsadaisy1 Fri 12-Feb-21 15:38:51

We have heating in ours so it’s a lovely room all year, comfy sofas too.

RedRidingHood Fri 12-Feb-21 15:46:25

Oh i love mine as well. We had it built on 20 years ago. Didn't really need the space as we have a large house but it was the best thing we ever did to the house. We live in there in summer and used to close it off between November and February. Although you could heat it it never felt cosy and the florr was freezing.
Last October we spent some money and had electric under floor heating fitted, wow it's even better. Been sitting in there this week warm as toast looking at the snow.

I love ours too. I went in there this morning and it was so cosy, with the sun streaming in. It has central heating, so we use it all year round.
It's my favourite room in the house.

I love our conservatory too.Definitely my favourite room in the house.Today we didn’t even need the heater on as the sun was shining in.I have loved sitting in there in lockdown, reading, watching the birds.Oh and watching DH working in the garden!!

I'm so glad to hear that you love your conservatory as much as I do. We live in a bungalow and ours facing into back garden. We are quite private as we have fir trees and our neighbour has them too

Judy54 Fri 12-Feb-21 16:45:31

I was never into conservatories until we moved to our present home and now find that we use it quite a lot. We also had the plastic roof replaced with glass but are now thinking of having a proper roof put on it. The reason for this is that it is so hot in the Summer and freezing in the Winter, even though there is a radiator in there.

Oldbat1 Fri 12-Feb-21 16:51:57

Previous house had one but unfortunately not this house and we don’t need the space any longer. I used to love sitting in ours and especially enjoyed relaxing atmosphere and it was so easy just to nod off. Lots of people round me seem to be putting proper roofs on making them into garden rooms.

Why not both sodapop?

I do like my conservatory but couldn't do without the utility room, no dog now unfortunately ?, but even when we had ??, they slept in the kitchen.

My previous house had a conservatory which I found was crumbling, having been built with soft wood! I had it re-built on the same base which was sound. I love it, had lots of plants in it and the cats liked sunning themselves in it - and in one case, on the roof! Sadly, my present house doesn't have one and, after 20 years, I still miss it.

I would love a conservatory , my house is so dark. One bed cottage with tiny windows.

25Avalon Fri 12-Feb-21 17:34:45

So do I. It’s so light in there with splendid views and under floor heating - costs a bomb to run mind so I keep the rest of the house on very low heat.

I had one on my recent bungalow. I had a love/hate relationship with it . It was at its best in the spring and autumn, even the winter sometimes, on those days when the sun shone but it was too cool outside. In the summer, it could soon get untenable if the sun was out, and generally in the winter too. Then it would be horrendously cold even with the big radiator going full blast and the halogen heater as well. The worst was when we got gales. We were high above town near the coast and fully exposed to the southwesters. Then it could be terrifying in there, feeling the panes moving and fearing roof panels being ripped off. Which did happen once.
On the whole, given a sheltered site, I think they’re great, the light getting into your brain gives you a far greater sense of well-being than sitting next to a window.
My new house won’t be having one though, it will take too much space off my new smaller garden.

polomint Fri 12-Feb-21 17:51:31

A few people nowadays seem to be building a shed in the garden but making it into a studio to work in and also making a small sun room. Seems a good idea if your garden is big enough. Due to lockdown, I think people are looking at their garden and looking at ways to improve it and enjoy it since they may well be spending more time at home in the future. Maybe the money they would have spent on a holiday is getting used this way instead

kittylester Fri 12-Feb-21 17:57:37

Mine is upstairs between two halves of our house so we sit among slate rooves. Love it.

Gardenersdelight2 Fri 12-Feb-21 17:59:47

We have a conservatory that I love but unfortunately it is too cold at the moment as the radiator isn't big enough to cope! We're going to replace the roof this year and that will hopefully keep it warmer as I really miss sitting out in it

seacliff Fri 12-Feb-21 18:01:05

I am so envious of all of you with conservatories. I would love to have that feeling of almost sitting in the garden, in all weather and feeling a bit of sun on me.

Our house all faces the wrong way, so the lounge is north facing and only gets a bit of sun in the early morning. We had thought of adding a conservatory to it, as people say you shouldn't have a south facing conservatory. Just worried it would make the lounge even darker.

polomint Fri 12-Feb-21 18:02:51

Ours faces north and comes off one of the bedrooms

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Feb-21 18:04:27

We gravitate to ours all the time, I think it is the light levels.

It is heated, for the plants as well as us, but today even though it w as bitterly cold with an icy gusty wind, the sun was shining and it was an absolute delight to snooze in the sun and warmth.

We have blinds fitted, and this year once lockdown has ended we are having new ones fitted, they go up in April and come down in September.

The conservatory is used every day of the year.
