As I was dishing up dinner, I noticed yesterday evening some neighbours delivering fish n chip suppers to different households - they’d obviously done a chippy run after taking orders. Great for those who can’t drive!

What a nice community. You are very fortunate. I would love to live somewhere like that. Not one of our neighbours would notice if anyrhing was wrong with us. Their is absolutely no neighbourliness here.

I don’t know a soul in my street only to say good morning to the immediate neighbours and I ve been here since 1983 however it is a street with about 700 + houses in it ?

It’s a cul de sac of 32 houses and a block of 8 flats so that is clearly a huge advantage. But you still need the people. One of the women involved this morning is a teacher, working hard but still available for evening pharmacy runs, does the fish and chip run on occasional Fridays and well - just thinks of others and makes sure that not only are our physical needs met but that we feel loved and cared for.

A little while ago I posted in the group as I needed the only shampoo ( from Lidl) that works for me. A neighbour went, posted that no stocks.. Two hours later, loads of recommendations for other shampoos and even little samples of shampoos and conditioners put on my doorstep to try ( and yes one works)

I live in a block of seven apartments, occupied by people ranging in age from three to 70+! I feel very blessed with having kind, considerate neighbours who helped me celebrate my 70th last May with a socially distanced gathering outside for fizz and nibbles, including a cake baked by a guy who is older than me. It meant a lot as DH was stuck in his home in France at the time.
There is never a problem with noise and I’m regularly asked if I need any shopping, although I am able to drive and cope with life as well as any of us do in the current circumstances. There are care homes nearby (DH joked that I wouldn’t have far to go when the time comes!!) so I don’t know others beyond my immediate neighbours.

That is lovely suziewoozie our village has been hugely supportive to one another during this pandemic. It has renewed my faith in human nature tbh and I feel lucky as I imagine the opposite is true too and many feel isolated. That said one of my neighbours, 2 doors up, moved out and to a different county...so maybe she didn't feel the same as me

That is nice to hear suziewoozie especially when so many of us are unable to see our DC and DGC or our parents.
I am lucky too in my neighbourhood, with a community shop across the street, but not next door as it's a public building on one side, a residential care home on the other. There's also a Chinese takeaway and a block of 16 flats. I used to try to talk to the flat dwellers but they are on 6 month leases and the changeover is constant. Piles of old mattresses and washing machines left outside doesn't endear me to those neighbours.
Thanks to texts , WhatsApp and the phone, it is easy to keep connected to the people in the town who I do know.

We never see our neighbours from one day to the next because there are so many trees here. We say hello if we do but that is about it. In the old days we used to have street BBQs but they stopped when a couple of people left. There are 12 houses in our street but all have quite big blocks and are away from the road.

WhatsApp groups have been so important for sharing local news and needs etc. I wish we had one in our block of flats but, although it's not a retirement block, there are many very elderly people who moved here 20/30/40 years ago and just stayed. The problems with understanding and using technology just seem too much!! I've spent hours with some of the ladies trying to show them how to eg access the Internet or use mobile phones but with no luck!
That said, we're a close knit group and all know each other and do what we can to help.

How lovely to have such good neighbours. My next door neighbours are lovely but the marina is closed at the moment so a large part of the community is missing. Looking forward to things becoming more normal.

It went well - stately procession up the road with his walker. Neighbours on doorsteps - like a celebrity visitation ?We even met our latest resident a rescue dog coming back from her walk.

Delighted of course ( else it wouldn’t have been arranged). He’s extremely sociable and when we were able to have parties, his wife would say to him
on arrival, start saying your goodbyes now as it will take you 3 hours ?

Tbf we were a community forever and so the pandemic response was built easily on strong foundations. We moved in 37 years ago and were the youngest in the road. We quickly realised that a community bank operated into which everyone paid what they could when they could and took out what they needed when needed. The balance of credits and debits waxes and wanes over the years but no one keeps count. Obviously we’ve taken out much more over the last year but we’ve paid in what we can.
