I don't really have any expectations re actors so I couldn't even begin to judge them! I'm just happy enough if I get involved in whatever story it is. I do have a few favourites though - particularly whoever is Mary on Coronation Street. I think she/her character is brilliant.

I agree about John Wayne. He was never much of an actor. He was the same character in every film. He was also an unpleasant, drunken racist and bigot. I also think Jack Nicholson was very overrated. He was either wooden as a plank or completely OTT. Nicholas Cage too is overrated in my opinion.

I feel sorry for all actors! Judi a great actress, Maggie Smith, brilliant. Hugh Grant has just started to reveal his talent. KK has none.Keeley Hawes in everything now - we’ll get bored with. Bill Ny replaceable with Jim Broadbent. Carey Mulligan - great. Jude Law is good. Cate Blanchard is lovely. Saiorse Ronan is very good, can do accents. Dustin excellent. Mostly English actors are good. Americans not so. But what do I know!

Laurence Fox. Indeed any of the Fox 'dynasty'. Couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. Assume he gets roles because of his name.

When I watched the programme where Hugh Grant played Jeremy Thorpe I completely changed my mind about his acting- he was brilliant in that. I always think Nicola Walker ( in Unforgotten tonight) is always just Nicola Walker - can’t see she has any acting ability at all.

Stephen Tompkinson. Always the same whatever character he plays! Dreadfully wooden actor!

Nicola Walker (Last Tango in Halifax and Unforgotten) - I always think she is about to cry!

Bill Nighy Always plays the same and Julie Walters always plays Mrs Overall!

Mandy Patinkin did a duet with Madonna on her album ‘I’m Breathless’. Lovely song. I liked him in Homeland, only watched the first two series as it wasn’t the same without Damian Lewis.

Agree with Marmight and others about Keira Knightley - I think she's dreadful.

Derek Thompson who plays Charlie Fairhead in Casualty, he never knows what to do with his hands.

Brian Blessed, gives me the creeps.

Marmight, have you seen Hugh Grant in The Gentleman? It is nothing like his normal roles and really shows what a good actor he can be. The film is a bit violent but it took me a while to even realise it was Hugh Grant. Hopefully it will mean he will be offered more roles with some breadth to really show his talents.
I'm not a fan of Anna Friel and have never understood the attraction of Marcella.
I loved John Wayne as a child but he was certainly one dimensional. In some ways, I think that was his attraction. You knew what you were getting with him.
Danny Dyer...urgh. He and his tv family were the last straw for me on Eastenders.
To be fair to most actors, they do not get much choice about the roles they get offered when they start out but by the time they are big names, they tend to get offered stuff they are well known for. So much money is poured into their productions so it takes a brave producer to cast someone out of their comfort zone. It is only when they get enough money behind them, they can pick and choose but even then, if they keep turning roles down, offers tail off.

It’s Judi Dench! Not Judy. Anyone who sees fit to disparage her could at least bother to get her name right.

I really didn’t like Keira Knightley - found her profoundly irritating - until I saw her in Atonement, where I thought she played that part very well.

Did those who don’t think much of Judi Dench ever see her in Philomena? If not, IMO that might change your mind.

I don’t care for Hugh Grant but I do think he’s a good actor - I agree with whoever quoted the Jeremy Thorpe film. I always thought (after Bridget Jones as compared with Four Weddings, that he was rather more convincing as a rotter than as a nice guy!

Robert Redford (when he was still acting) - just always Robert Redford. Ditto Tom Cruise, can’t stand him anyway.

James Nesbitt always has the same awful stricken look on his face. Perhaps that just is his normal face !!

Some very interesting views here. I agree with some of them but can’t agree with the comments about Judi Dench and Nicolas Cage.

I don't think Judi Dench plays herself in every role, you only have to watch Philomena in which she plays an Irish woman who is trying to find the son she was forced to give up for adoption and Red Joan in which she plays a retired widow who is suddenly arrested and interrogated by the Secret Service, there are many more examples of very different roles she has played.

Nicolas Cage has played some very diverse roles and received numerous awards and nominations, not only the Oscars but Bafta and many other respected bodies such as The Screen Actors Guild. He’s not dreary either, look at Raising Arizona, Face Off, Peggy Sue Got Married, Matchstick Men and The Weather Man, all very entertaining films. His dramatic roles include Leaving Las Vegas for which he won an Academy Award and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.

I disagree with other suggestions such as Tom Hanks, Julie Walters and Nicole Kidman too but it’s always good to read opposing views.

I agree with the majority of actors that have been named but can I add Marlon and Rishi on Emmerdale why have they still got these awful actors on screen are they related to someone in casting or do they feel sorry for them because they wouldn’t get another acting job
