maddyone the Duchess of Kent used her abilities and knowledge to make a place for herself. Meghan and Harry have different skills and are using those to make their own way.

Yes it was but I was referring to the UK in general

Incidentally, Katherine Kent, as she prefers to be known, having taught for ten years in a state school in Hull (she was known as Mrs Kent) then returned to teaching. She went to teach in a school attended by many of the children who had lived in Grenfell, teaching music to the children.

Although she is still apparently listed as HRH The Duchess of Kent in the Court Circular, she prefers to be known as Katherine Kent. Apparently although she attends occasional royal functions ie she attended the wedding of Catherine and William, she has essentially withdrawn from royal life.

This is what withdrawing from royal service means. It does not mean selling the royal connection to the highest bidder.

But why should they be quiet, what does it matter.

The Duchess of Kent withdrew from public life in the nineties and got a job as a music teacher in a school. That’s called working for a living. It’s also called not trading on royal connections. I’m unsure why some on here can’t see the difference between what the Duchess of Kent did, quietly and unassumingly, and what Harry and Meghan have done, and are doing.

I already said that I don’t have any problem with Meghan and Harry working for a living, good on them if that’s what they do. But I do have difficulty with them trading on the royal name/connection.

I think Harry and Meghan should stripped of their titles, if they wanted to be like normal people why are they still Duke and Duchess, oh yes they will get more money being called that rather than Mr and Mrs Windsor

There are three sources of funding for The Queen, or officials of the Royal Household acting on her behalf, in both a public and private capacity. These are: the Sovereign Grant, the Privy Purse and The Queen's personal wealth and income, which was arguably accumulated off the backs of the people of this realm. Artworks, jewellery may be privately owned but they don’t fall off trees, they are accumulated as a result of owning great chunks of land appropriated over centuries. They do dish out money to the children. The taxpayer does fund a considerable part of the monarch’s everyday spending, not to mention taxpayer funded transport, security etc every time she steps out of the door of one of her castles. So to say they aren’t funded by us is inaccurate, they certainly are funded by a considerable amount by us, much of it hidden.

So its seen as a complete rejection of us as a country I think.

I think it's worse than that in the eyes of many Nell, I think she came in to a traditionally British institution, with all the qualities of deference reserve etc, they let her in (which is the tone of many) she looked around and thought crikey I dont like this. So its seen as a complete rejection of us as a country I think.

Greeneyedgirl I used to do something along those lines - don't any more, but the way of thinking remains. I can be very irreverent at times on here but ultimately I do like to understand things and have genuine debate.

Sorry not to be more specific but it was something I did that wouldn't make it too hard to identify me in RL, which isn't what I want to bring here. Not that I think I'm of any importance at all, it's just nice to be Nell.

The reason they are doing the likes of Netflix is that have to be self funding unlike the rest of the family who are funded by us.

We'd better hope nothing happens to Charles and William in the near future or Harry will be Prince Regent to a very young King George!

Are podcasts on Spotify, appearances on talk shows, and signing up to work with/for Netflix service? The last time I looked those particular pursuits would amount only to self service ie promoting one’s self.

I have no problem with Harry and Meghan becoming independent and earning a living, and leaving royal service behind. What I have difficulty with is their trading their royal connections for fame and money. And then saying that what they’re doing is service. It’s not, it’s self service.

Galaxy Perhaps that's what's really at the heart of the dislike for M - she threatens our reserve and therefore our intrinsic Britishness? By marrying into the RF - ie essentially infiltrating what many see as the bastion and helm of the British identity, she is perceived as a direct threat on an individual level? As in if she can 'break' the monarchy and make herself equal what will she and people like her do to the rest of society? I mean if people like M create a level playing field how does a society like the UK with its social heritage respond? Thinking of it in those terms it's not quite so suprising that she invokes such visceral reactions - perhaps those reactions are simply vented through the language and experiences of people, because it's not so much who she is but how she makes us feel? She could be symbolic of a much deeper, visceral threat that may not be real, but people feel in their gut. In short, she is catalysing and figure heading deep change.

Are Harry and Meghan lying low and saying ‘nuffin’? I think the evidence is to the contrary.

Smiles it's hard not to see that kind of behaviour, plus the cleaving to selective 'service' as the red flags of communal narcissism - very uncomfortable.

There are some people who will always "cop it" whether guilty or innocent - they are just disliked. I think of Jeremy Corbyn for eg. Everything they say or do is discredited. It is a form of bullying (it may or maybe not deserved) and the only solution is to "lie low and say nuffin" in the words of old Brer Rabbit.
