What advice would you give a new grandparent?

Poppyred Wed 24-Feb-21 22:22:11

Don’t offer advice unless asked. Oh and enjoy every moment!

I’m sure there will be lots of great advice here. I would let the parents know they have your support but remember at all times you are the grandparent not the parent.

Take your lead from the parents and abide by their rules. Don’t offer unwanted advice, learn to bite your tongue if you are tempted to think you know better.

Relax and enjoy your new role. Be supportive if you are able. Being a grandparent is wonderful and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have for the past 14 years. Congratulations!

I’m wondering why advice is needed. Surely it’s just a natural progression.

Say you love the baby's name regardless of how you truly feel about it.

Vq that made me laugh out loud! ?

BlueBelle Thu 25-Feb-21 10:47:21

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket by that I mean love the little one enjoy the little one but YOUR life shouldn’t stop
So many grandparents come on here who have obviously given up everything to adore this little thing and then go to pieces if they move away, or grow up (which they do (very very quickly)

Don't interfere. Give tactful advice if asked for it. Be tactful in general terms.

Witzend Thu 25-Feb-21 10:51:19

Give advice only if asked, and don’t take offence if they look aghast and say nobody does that any more! - and imply that it’s a wonder your own children didn’t die/grow up emotionally stunted because of your cluelessness.

Make the most of them, sensibly, when they are little. Speaking as a granny of 18, 17, 16, 14 and 13 years old, they do grow out of granny a bit as they get older.

Also, although you think no one else has had such an intelligent, beautiful, amusing, amazing grandchild, I’m afraid we all think that! Don’t bore the pants off others with too many photos, videos, milestones, etc, etc, etc.

Being a grandparent is marvellous. But don't make them the centre of your life. Maintain your own life.

Enjoy every magical moment.
