Just answer but don't say anything, after 10 seconds or so the line is disengaged.

We have caller display on our phone so obviously see the number as it rings, we don’t answer withheld ones,

I generally allow them a place near the TV to listen to what I was trying to listen to! They can't bother anyone else while I am being so kind to them!!

Works evey time.

We are with TalkTalk and they have an excellent screening system (free) which allows us to choose whether to take a call once, accept calls from a particular person freely or block numbers.

I must confess to having enjoyed a few moments of glee when a cold caller got through the system by claiming to be from our insurance company; when I realised that in fact she was not, I played the "poor old woman, doesn't understand" role and she eventually told me to Eff Off, and slammed the phone down. Result!

I pick the phone up and walk away, make a cup of coffee and then return. They have always gone by then.

I also find them irritating but, having once had a job where there was some cold calling involved, I do make sure I am polite.

As others have said, the people ringing you are employed to go through lists and phone people. Perhaps it is the only job they can get.

The job I had was a normal job but sometimes there was an element of cold calling. Most people were polite to me.

1572 sounds a good idea for the OP.

Just put the phone down straight away. Don’t say anything after your initial hello.

If it’s any comfort these kind of phone calls seem to come in spates. Loads of them and then it all goes quiet, so you might be coming to the end of it.

I don’t have an answer phone but might need to look into one. I have to answer unknown numbers because it may be the care nurses.
It just annoys me because if I want their services I will contact them.
Sorry just venting. Dad always told me to be polite, they are only doing their job but One day Someone is going to get an earful.

If you dial 1572 immediately after you put the phone down it will go on the list of calls you have already blocked. BT advised me to do this. I say to the people who ring you are making an illegal call what is the address of you head office. That shuts them up! Good luck. ?

Can you see the number that is calling? I only answer ones I recognise (the name comes up as well as the number) and let the others go to answer phone.

If its a real call they’ll leave a message.
