Phones, how many of you still have a landline phone?

In France some areas are not good for mobile reception. We still use a landline as it comes with the broadband and also a French TV satellite box.
I use the house phone for calls or my iPad for video calls.

Just the landline for me. a mobile would be a complete waste of time and money. I can't be doing with fiddly things

I have a landline for various reasons.
I like the fact that my number hasn't changed for over 30 years and when you phone me, you know where I am and as Monica says you can leave a message

I get a sore ear if I speak on a mobile for very long and I am sure it isn't good.
My DD lives in a rural area with no mobile coverage.

The number is on every database and the address books of all our friends and organisations it would be a huge faff to change everything now.
BT's latest package is quite competitive.

I choose not to have a smartphone. I like my cheap but very reliable basic Nokia just for speaking to people or sending/receiving texts. Internet use is only for home for me!

silverlining your mobile has in the Settings - Call Register. It shows calls received (that you answered), calls missed (you can check you rang you) that you didn’t dash to in time! Otherwise, bit boring, keep your mobile in the same place upstairs and downstairs! That way you’ll know where it is.

I only give out the landline number as do not want to be tied to a mobile, take it with me when I go out in case of emergency but make all calls at home on landline as much cheaper. When did it become necessary to be in contact with everyone constantly?
My son gave me a smartphone but it needed to be constantly recharged and as I did not use it for anything other than calls or texting with the odd photo when on holiday I gave it back and still use my old phone, now at least 10 years old. Maybe I am a Luddite too!

I only have one because when I have tried to cancel it Virgin Media will charge more as the landline is part of a bundle and without it, the charge would go up. I do not use it though.

The difference is as Maizie said, broadband that needs a phone line is fibre to the box in the street and then the old copper phone wire to your house. They can call it "fibre" as it is fibre part of the way.

Full fibre is fibre all the way and so much faster and more reliable. Your area has to have new infrastructure but it is no more expensive to you than ordinary slow broadband.

Muse when you use the mobile internet on your phone (not WiFi) you use 2, 3or 4g depending on where you are. This is the data that you pay for.
5g is the latest fastest connection. You will need a new phone and contract to get it. I'm hanging on until it's more widespread and the price comes down.

Thanks. I need that allowance as I use my mobile (in workshop) outside the house a lot. Not worth running a cable to the outbuilding.

I was joking about 5G. Very poor in Cornwall.

If I am home, and that’s where I usually am in these covid times, and I get a call my watch sets off a noise to tell me I have a call on the mobile. Problem is my clothes don’t have pockets and I don’t carry my mobile everywhere with me in the house so then I have to run round looking fir it. I am usually too late, so never do know who has called me.
Why can’t they call on my house phone....thats what it’s there for. Call me a Luddite if you like, I don’t care.

Its more annoying as i got an 'old fashioned' old- school black phone (70's style) with real finger dialling and old style ringing noise- and it just rings out really loud.?

We have a landline, it was useful this morning when we had a long, involved 3 way phone conversation with a firm this morning.
Mobiles have their uses but I prefer a proper phone.

Have landline purely for wifi.only ones who ring landline are, my eldest son very occasionally if he cant get any of us on mobiles, or the anticoagulant clinic if its urgent for my warfarin dose(though I've asked if they will ring mobile) and also anyone ringing to cold call to sell etc. Its most annoying.

People that have got rid of their landlines how do you keep in touch with people who don’t have a mobile?
I have two elderly friends who don’t have mobiles and one friend who lives in the middle of nowhere and gets no connection
I have to have a landline for wifi so why not have a phone on the end of it for people who can’t connect you any other way

Some mobile companies offer unlimited texts and calls to mobiles and landlines. If you don't use much data the costs are quite low for all this. I need about 10GB a month and pay £10. MrM hardly needs any and pays £8. Mine is capped though (limited photos) but I use WhatsApp to send photos and videos (free).

I have both, but I much prefer the landline. The sound is better and it is more comfortable to hold.

That's interesting. I thought that all the infrastructure was provided by BT.

My broadband isn't box to house cable; it still runs through the old stuff. But there was preparatory work going on outside my house a week or two ago for laying fibre cable, so it'll be all the way to us soon (ish)

I've kept my landline and would like to use it if I suspect a scam on my mobile. I've heard where thieves tell you to phone your bank, and somehow keep you on the line.

We'd love to get rid of the landline phone but we can't. We have both and use them for different reasons:

- Speaker on mobile better than landline (tried a variety of
landline phones)
- Poor signal area for some of our family and friends in South
West and Wales so they have to ring our landline.
- Our mobile signal not brilliant. Yesterday was terrible. Gave up with mobile, I had 3 calls to make - used landline.

Never go out without my mobile. Broke down twice (whew! thank goodness I had it with me).

I have a scheduled Do not disturb on my mobile.

I don't need any more.

We have a landline for the internet and we use it for all online buying. Anything where an outside person wants to contact us. We have an answerphone so if we are out they can leave a message.

I loathe smart phones, for me the screen is too small and the keyboards are too fiddly. I am mildly dyspraxic and the tips of the fingers on my right hand are numb following carpal tunnel surgery, while I also have Reynauds syndrome, which particularly affects my left hand. This means I have problems with pressing, tapping and swiping because I cannot judge how much pressure I am using.

Bluebelle There is no problem communicating between a landline and a mobile. I regularly ring landlines from my mobile and mobiles from my landline.

I still have a landline. You’ve got to pay for the line anyway, to get your WiFi etc, so why not have a phone at the end of it, if you know what I mean , so you have two ways of communicating, mobile and landline.

You don’t use your mobile much for £6 a month pitt ?
