Mothers Day

I am in a bubble with DD and see her all the time. She dropped a card and plant in to me. DS has never much bothered about cards on Mother’s Day before lockdown or visiting much really so no different there. He sent me a text this morning, that was more than some years?

I haven't seen one son for 5 years as he lives in Australia. He did send a card. The other son lives 3 hours away, I haven't seen since a brief visit last October. Got some lovely flowers and a phone call.

Not doing anything special.

Got flowers & cards from my 2 stepdaughters, nothing from my 3 sons

Our daughter, son in law and granddaughter have just been to the door with cards and lovely gifts. Bless em.

Mothers Day is the 2nd Sunday in May in the US, but I did get a most welcome email from him this morning - the date of his CV vaccination, as he's been bumped up the list. Nicest gift ever.

Yesterday my daughter called with a card, bottle of Prosecco and a pot of outdoor plants she had potted up for me. She lives four miles away so I see her at the door quite often and we go for a walk occasionally. My son lives 14 miles away. I had privately hoped he would turn up today but a plant was delivered by carrier.

Lots of WhatsApp messages and phone calls this morning. DS1 had already sent a box of chocs and a Moonpig card with a lovely photo of himself and me. When DS2 rang, it was a bit embarrassing because I knew he would have sent something but it hadn't arrived. There was an expectant silence from him and I knew he was expecting me to thank him, but I didn't know for what. Half an hour later a parcel arrived from John Lewis containing some lovely toiletries, so I was able to thank him at last.

Received lovely gifts, and flowers and cards from all three AC.Today all three phoned for a chat.
We aren’t in a bubble with anyone so won’t see them, but looking forward to Easter when garden visits are allowed.

Sadly couldn’t see any of my children or grandchildren as they live too far away for even a doorstep visit or drive by. I did have text messages from them very early on and cards from my 2 daughters - my son thinks cards are a waste of money and beer sends them but did send messages from work as he’s working today. I had a lovely afternoon tea delivered from all of them and spoke to them all this afternoon. I would love to have seen them of course but consider myself very lucky to have heard from all of them.

Having received a lovely plant which came this morning, I was pleased to have a phone call from my son later this afternoon. He was recovering from cooking Sunday dinner for his family. But then he told me had sent lunch to his in-laws!

My beautiful GD aged 22, who has been with me since she was 4,after her mum, my daughter died,spoils me every month when she gets paid with flowers or a plant.
This morning I was woken with tea and an excited “ Nan, come and get your presents” ,beautiful plant,wine chocolates and my favourite picky bits.
We have had our ups and downs and problems over the years,but she really has matured and grown into a beautiful girl despite the difficult hand in life she has been given.
My son Face timed me this morning with my DGD aged 2.5, shouting “hello nanny”can’t wait to see her and give her big cuddles, she has devolved a lisp and can’t wait to give me my “prethent”

A lunchtime visit from the DD1 support bubble (which includes baby DGS6), pavement chat from the doorstep with a sopping wet DS, and a long phone conversation with DD2, who doesn't live locally enough to call by. I've a set of posh soaps, a bottle of my favourite facial oil, and chocs x3 (though only x2 left now ). One card featuring Chris Whitty (described inside it as my secret crush) and one with a photo of a coachload of happily waving, vaccinated pensioners off on a jaunt. The other is yet to arrive - I wonder what Covid related message it will feature!

It's my birthday today as well as Mothers day. Have spoken to all 5 of our sons - 3 abroad. Presents from the 2 in this country. I am happy!

Five boys! Phew.

Just remembered there used to be Five Boys chocolate bar, I regularly bought when a child.

I am really upset, because neither of my grown up children sent anything for Mothers Day, not even a card, My son lives abroad and Mothers Day is on a different date, so he didn't know it was on, which is understandable. My daughter said she thinks Mothers Day is too commercial and doesn't really agree with it. She doesn't have much money, so I didn't expect anything expensive. I was going to get a takeaway lunch with my husband to celebrate Mothers Day, but in the end I didn't go, as I didn't really feel like it. Both of them phoned, but I think only because my husband reminded them on the day. Everyone else was posting pictures of their cards, flowers etc on Instagram and I just felt really bad. I don't know why it has affected me so much, but it has. Should I say something, or just leave it?

How sad for you. I would be upset too. I'm not a mom though, so I'm not that confident in giving advice.
However, I do think that in order to get support and advice from the Wise Women of GN, you'd be better off starting a new thread about your situation.
There will be others who have similar experiences of Mothers' Day.

Day after and I'm reading of the joys of actually seeing loved ones yesterday. Beautiful ,and they will be moments to treasure in these difficult times.

It does also touch me emotionally when I read of those who couldn't do this. Not just for Mother's Day but for other special occasions.

I hope 2022 will start off with flying colours with plans being confidently made for parties, gatherings, festivities and ceremonies (both sad and joyful ones). Plans that won't have to be cancelled again.
A dear friend of ours died last April and two attempts to meet to celebrate his life and achievements have been cancelled.

I had a wonderful day. My DS, DiL and GDs visited with flowers, chocolates and gorgeous card (we're in a bubble), I had a card and texts from my stepdaughter, and plant and beautiful card from my youngest DS via the post. He called me for a long video chat in the afternoon - all the more wonderful as we had been estranged for over ten years and had just started to repair our relationship properly when Covid struck last year. Feeling blessed.

Grannygold I can understand your upset and maybe it just makes you feel that although you brought your children into this world they do not see the need to honour you on one day throughout the year. Of course it feels hurtful.
One of my daughters (she has my grand-children) and she
did not even send me a text message yesterday. She has not bothered for about four years now so to me Mothering Sunday does not mean a lot. It was GD birthday during the week and as usual I done her a card and present also put a
lovely birthday cake and some cup cakes in the bag then took it to my daughters. I did not go in as I am not in her bubble but still had a wave from my GD
A small card or even one sent from the GC would have made my day but as I knew I would receive nothing I just quietly accepted it.

It's a good idea from FannyCornforth. It's not just Mothers" Day that gets missed. I'd be interested to hear what other GNers say.

To receive nothing from my loved ones would really upset me. It may have needed a reminder but you did get calls, as I did yesterday from my two. No presents as I know they are both short of cash and I insisted that they do not buy something. I also appreciate that they are both extremely busy with work and their own children.

I would also add that it was also the first Mother's Day in 69 years that I haven't seen my Mother. She died last May aged 93 in a nursing home, so the family had been unable to see her for several weeks. It wasn't due to Covid. I know there are many thousands of families bereaved due to Covid which is absolutely dreadful, but sometimes I think those of us who lost their loved ones during this year for other reasons, and were unable to say goodbye and have a proper send-off for them, are overlooked. Moan over.

We did a sort of two tier mother's day. DS lives with me and his little boy lives with us part of the week so he cooked lunch and his ex joined us and had her cards. Then a doorstep call from DD with card and present for me -while I generously gave her various things I wanted to get rid of

Just remembered there used to be Five Boys chocolate bar, I regularly bought when a child.

There was, lemongrove, with five different fillings. I was excited when I saw the familiar logo in B & M just before lockdown, but it’s just one filling now (raspberry or orange).

I’ll still be buying some for the grandsons, even though number six has arrived since then.
