On borrowed time - the royals

The House of Windsor “Self obsessed and more concerned about their show biz credentials than the well-being of their ‘subjects’ are on borrowed time .” This was from Jon Faine in the Melbourne Age today. Many of us here would agree with him, particularly after recent events. He went on to say that their insistence on the antiquated protocols and pointless archaic etiquette to match is all evidence of unfathomable privilege. You know what, usually I cannot stand this man but this time I think he is right! What makes them so special ? Something in their blood or what ? It is feudal nonsense that we just go on accepting out of habit.

Very interesting thank you, not sure what you mean by Try Again? Can you explain ?

Alegrias1 Thu 18-Mar-21 11:05:37

Windsor is in the affluent south, I suspect they'd recover. If the RF no longer supply the HoS then people will still want to see Windsor Castle. If not they can pop down the road to Legoland. I love Windsor Castle, all that history. Not at all interested in seeing who lives there though.

Really, the argument that some people will lose their jobs if we replace the monarchy is the least convincing argument I've ever heard.

Bridgeit From the Royal Borough of Windsor's own report
Employment is concentrated in office-based service sectors (92.3%), with financial services (25.7%) and Public Administration, Education and Health (19.9%) prevalent.

Don’t forget Cornwall & the training opportunity for young people to gain skills & qualifications offered by PC Trust

Obviously I am being a bit loose with the term ‘whole ‘ as are you , but about 75% are dependant on this trade .

Bridgeit Thu 18-Mar-21 10:56:46

Windsor.

Anniebach Thu 18-Mar-21 10:56:05

So the documentary on The Duchy recently, all those tenants lied Grany ?

NellG Thu 18-Mar-21 10:51:53

Always Grany - highlight of my day! You may convince me yet wink

trisher Thu 18-Mar-21 10:51:45

Bridgeit if you can identify one community where the whole economy is dependant on a member of the RF continuing to work as a member of the RF, you can draw parallels with the closure of the mines. As it is some of the jobs linked to them are to do with the property they own and their lifestyles which will not change that much. They are not for example going to start cleaning their castles or raising game for their shooting parties. They will continue to employ others to do that.

Grany Thu 18-Mar-21 10:51:24

The tennents on Duchy land talk how they think Charles treats tennents unfairly and uses The Duchy is his own private feidom

Grany Thu 18-Mar-21 10:49:02

The man who shouldn't be king.

That is the whole point isn’t it....... big scale lose of jobs are devastating ...

Bridgeit Thu 18-Mar-21 10:38:45

I do believe you to be very wrong to think that ‘No one cared about the Miners’ .

trisher Thu 18-Mar-21 10:33:41

There's nothing to stop the RF employing as many people as they like, they are wealthy enough to do so.
One of the biggest tourist attractions near here, because of its links with Harry Potter, is Alnwick Castle and gardens which have been turned by a very entrepreneurial Duchess into a brilliantly successful operation. Nothing to stop any of the RF doing the same with their own properties. In fact if they had to earn their own living and were not funded by us they might actually generate more money, develop more tourism attractions and employ more people.
A pity no one thought about all the miners who lost their jobs. There are places still suffering the effects of the total devastation of communities.

Bridgeit Thu 18-Mar-21 10:22:31

I can only conclude that you have not, & that you have no empathy for those who would loose their jobs with 5he RF

Bridgeit Thu 18-Mar-21 10:20:37

Of course. ..... and when some of my family lost their jobs, how personally rude!

nanna8 Thu 18-Mar-21 10:17:23

I think the reason they have survived is down to the Queen. I am not a royalist, never have been but I couldn’t fault her. I actually quite like PC, too but I really think they just have too much money and privilege in this day and age.

I keep harping back to..... what about the people they employ, ... I’m pretty sure they don’t want to be made redundant.. & we are talking a lot of jobs through several counties.

Did you feel this way when mines, steel works etc were closed down?

lemsip Thu 18-Mar-21 10:16:32

seamstress. No it isn't their job to be in the limelight and have their photos taken all the time, or to wave to plebs, what is a pleb? what a low term.

Shropshirelass I agree completely with your comment .

seamstress Thu 18-Mar-21 10:05:21

shropeshirelass isn't it their "job" to be "in the limelight"? To have their photos taken, shake hands with people they don't know and wave to plebs, have everyone gawp at their weddings, children etc? Otherwise what is their `'job"?

seamstress Thu 18-Mar-21 10:02:36

How many tourists see the royals?

Alegrias1 Thu 18-Mar-21 09:56:49

Just off to find my previous post to show that the amount of money they bring in through tourism is miniscule....

Something like 2% of our total tourist income.

Shropshirelass Thu 18-Mar-21 09:52:56

I don’t agree with him. The Royals bring an awful lot of money into the UK through tourism. I like having them, I enjoy the pomp and ceremony. There are hard working royals who just get on with it, Princess Anne for one also Sophie, Countess of Wessex (who was also a commoner who has integrated beautifully). They work very hard and don’t crave the limelight. It is their job after all. Maybe it needs streamlining but it is a huge part of our heritage, long may it stay. The queen has been (and still is) a remarkable example to us all.
