None of the usual celebrations, very quiet here today. Lancashire cheese on toast for lunch, butter pie later ?

Blossoming Sun 21-Mar-21 14:37:38

(It isn’t really today, we just decided to celebrate ?)

???Dow! After just learning something unpleasant elsewhere .. Thought I'd extend my knowledge on a brighter subject.
You got me there Blossoming ? Cheese on toast!
Had the desired effect anyway.

What's butter pie?

Froglady Sun 21-Mar-21 16:37:20

Aveline

What's butter pie?

It's a pie made with butter and has potatoes in it. It's really tasty.

I was brought up in Lancashire, but born in Yorkshire. I had cheese on toast at lunch time, purely by chance, the cheese came from a Lancashire creamery.
I would like to the recipe for butter pie please. Happy (not) Lancashire day everyone. smile

There actually is a Lancashire Day in November when there’s a big food market with local producers. We just felt like having some fun. Glad it cheered people up!

Butter pies are a local delicacy, sometimes called Friday pies because no meat was to be eaten on a Friday.

This is a good recipe

Happy not-Lancashire Day from Lancashire! X

PamelaJ1 Sun 21-Mar-21 19:33:05

Ok- here’s a question for you.
What is a coconutter and which town are they associated with?

Redhead56 Sun 21-Mar-21 19:39:29

My daughter lives in Pendle area the pies up there are the best. When I stay with her (not for a year now) we have a pub lunch it’s always a big decision cheese and onion or steak. Can not wait til we can go there again I love it there.

Redhead56 Sun 21-Mar-21 19:44:48

I looked it up dancers from Bacup?

Blossoming Sun 21-Mar-21 19:45:50

Lovely walking around Pendle and some great pubs for lunch. It will be good to get out and also to support our small businesses too.

PamelaJ1 Sun 21-Mar-21 19:55:08

Redhead absolutely correct. They dance every Easter going from pub to pub. I think the dancing is more coordinated at the start of the day.
I wonder if they are doing it this year? Doubt it.

The coconutters are a border Morris side, though blackface may not be so acceptable these days.

Claretjan Sun 21-Mar-21 20:04:24

I grew up around Pendle and really miss it. My sister used to live near Wigan and they had amazing butter pies there!

Greyduster Sun 21-Mar-21 20:04:57

Speaking as a died in the wool Yorkshire lass, proper farmhouse Lancashire cheese is the absolute dogs thingies! Beyond delicious.?. Unsurpassed for cheese and onion pie. And cheese on toast.

Greyduster Sun 21-Mar-21 20:10:59

Now I have to go and have a lie down because saying nice things about Lancashire has made me come over all unnecessary!?.

PamelaJ1 Sun 21-Mar-21 20:38:16

Blossoming it was nothing to do with racism though.

lemongrove Sun 21-Mar-21 20:42:43

Greyduster you should be banging the drum for Wensleydale! Nothing beats it toasted with chopped spring onion balanced on top.
Hotpot anyone?

Aldom Sun 21-Mar-21 22:58:04

Blossoming Thank you for the recipe. smile

Blossoming Sun 21-Mar-21 23:04:46

Pamelaj1 I know it isn’t, but you know what some folk are like these days!

Greyduster I love Wensleydale cheese and Coverdale cheese and Yorkshire curd tart. I am missing trips across the border!
