Well my children are in their early twenties and I was talking about the big ship stuck in the Suez Canal. To which they all said "The what!" I just can't believe they've never heard of it

That's so unprofessional of your coworkers. I feel
badly for you, mrswoo! They sound like a bunch of emotionally stunted adolescents. What a shame that a lovely thing like a pearl necklace is sniggered at.

So funny and enlightening.

I am now going to start wearing my Pearl necklace. If you see me give me a little wave and nod your head 3 times. I’ll know that you are one of the in crowd.
I don’t suppose the young know what an in crowd is....

Please don’t make this another RF thread, but I’ve just watched 5 ‘celebrities’ who didn’t know that the Duke of Lancaster is the Queen!

Many years ago my mother had a wooden, rickety ironing board. When she did the ironing she always banged the iron down noisily. My father use to say 'ah, it's bonking time again!' They had no idea why we found it so funny.

I asked in Sainsburys if they had any nail brushes and the lad had no idea what they were.

Just had to Google snowballing .... enough said.

I've known about pearl necklaces for some time. At work one day I was chatting to some younger colleagues, discussing what to get my sister for her 60th. "Some jewellery?" suggested one. "Possibly" I replied as " I know her husband was planning to give her a pearl necklace". Almost immediate collapse of young colleagues who then kindly explained my faux pas.

I googled tea bagging and ok, I get that. But no such luck with string of pearls. All I got was houseplants and Glenn Miller.....

You need to search for Pearl necklace not string of pearls. You might prefer not to.
I’ve had to look up a few terms mentioned on this thread. Eye opening!

Thanks, HLL. Whilst I was dithering someone kindly spelled it out.... Kaimoana I think. So now I am in the know! grin

Do we have to sit an exam on our newfound knowledge do you think. ?

KaEllen Mon 29-Mar-21 12:49:26

Loving this thread! I learnt a lot... grin

Calendargirl

My grandson, when about 13, confronted by a bar of soap in our bathroom, had no idea you had to rub it between your hands to get a lather. Only used to liquid soap.

?

Mine were the same, Calendargirl. But now their parents are trying to reduce plastic waste, they’re telling us why it’s so much better for the environment. grin

I've just started reading the thread from the very beginning. I didn't realise how sheltered my life has been up until now. I've had to goggle "pearl necklace, tea bagging, merkin, lavender marriage, rug munching and snow balling". My education on sexual matters has increased by leaps and bounds.smile
I did have to try to explain to my mother, many years ago, what was meant by oral sex.

Forestflame Mon 29-Mar-21 09:55:51

Have just googled, teabagging & snowballingshock???

Biscuitmuncher Mon 29-Mar-21 09:21:18

grandmajet she said , well that didn't go as you expected ?

mancgirl Mon 29-Mar-21 08:52:08

Edit!! had to read all 6 of them!

mancgirl Mon 29-Mar-21 08:50:33

Morning. Just caught up with this thread. Hilarious, hadvyobrrsd6them all now I'm going to be a bit late for my walk! Going back to the first page, I'm from Manchester-obviously- and I do know what an awning us. However, even I, with 2 grown up son who keep us in touch, left out the gap in my education on the subject of a pearl necklace ?

shysal Mon 29-Mar-21 08:48:47

My ex-H spent the first 50 years of his life not knowing that February had an R in it. It was then pointed out to him by someone to whom he submitted newsletter information.

It does make you wonder how much understanding of history the people who demonstrate & desecrate statues actually have.

DillytheGardener Mon 29-Mar-21 00:20:57

(This anecdote was quite a few years ago, no visitors in current times!)

Caught up on the thread and the ‘teabagging’ made me laugh. My sister was over and I was advising her to put wet teabags in the freezer then on her eyes to reduce puffiness, and my son one the cheeky toad, told me to stop advising my sister to get teabagged. Son two in peels of laughter and my sister and I had to google what was so funny. I’m glad no one looks through my search history. I just had to google pearl necklace, curiosity got the better of me

Monica, but the point was since 1964, nobody noticed that items from ancient Egypt had been placed in the Asia box.
and the people looking for the Egypt items of course didn't think to look in the asia box, since Egypt is not in asia.
and that was in a university museum.
