Well my children are in their early twenties and I was talking about the big ship stuck in the Suez Canal. To which they all said "The what!" I just can't believe they've never heard of it

On Would I Lie to You Thomas Schaffenaker (not sure if that spelling is right) said he had only recently found out that lambs were baby sheep. That rather stretched credulity for me but I suppose it's possible.

I've had such a laugh reading this thread!

I hope the police never have to take my iPad away. They’ll be shocked at all I’ve investigated since opening this thread!!

Ro60 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:09:24

I recall a cross-over time when I I texted LOL I meant lots of love

pen50 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:15:24

Gosh, Urmstongran, I thought I'd heard everything but that was a new one for me!

sue01 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:19:01

Haha. Oh Bluebelle, I went out wearing a Small Faces Tee Shirt ... a young chap asked me who they were and I told him they were a favourite Mod group from the 60s.....

Wow he said... we're doing the Mods at school in History !!

PaperMonster Sun 28-Mar-21 12:19:48

Someone mentioned the suffragettes; I have to teach British Values and it always amazes me how many people of all ages haven’t heard of Suffragettes!!

Mini2020 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:22:25

Never heard of the Barnett Formula!

grannyrebel7 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:26:01

I was talking about the famous statue of David by Leonardo da Vinci and my DH said "David who?" He'd never heard of it and funnily enough a few days later we visited our local garden centre and lo and behold they had a replica there! I was tempted to buy him, but he was 100 quid. If we go back and he's still there I am going to buy him. It will feel like it was meant to be then smile

I never knew till reading this that a pearl necklace can mean something else..I will have to look it up but wont dare as would lead to weird stuff on my computer?!

DanniRae Sun 28-Mar-21 12:30:43

Kaimoana

Good grief, why so coy and at our age too.
Pearl necklace is a euphemism for sperm spilled near the breast and neck area.

Quite a few of us said we didn't want to know the meaning of a pearl necklace. So I hope you are proud of yourself for putting it on here angry
What difference does it make how old we are? Why do we need to know for goodness sake?
I think you are truly out of order angry

jenni123 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:31:08

I've not heard of a few of these.
The Incredible String Band
Williamson! ??
cottaging
saltire
Barnett formula
Maybe I am not as well educated as I thought

poshpaws Sun 28-Mar-21 12:31:21

?The Incredible String Band ?

Yeah!! The Hedgehog song, and Painting Box! Oh, that takes me back, now I must see if they've brought albums out in CD format!

readalot Sun 28-Mar-21 12:32:06

I had to look up the meaning of a pearl necklace and budgie smuggling as I have never heard the sayings

Grandmabeach Sun 28-Mar-21 12:32:18

Once went to a Greek restaurant with friends which had a Graffiti of marbles with Elgin Marbles written underneath. Our friends, in their 40's, did not understand it.

I can’t see anything wrong with a Pearl necklace. I had one for my 21st birthday and it’s lovely.

Brownowl564 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:37:21

The other day on Facebook an American was asking for afternoon tea ideas and someone from Stoke said she had never heard of an afternoon tea???

4allweknow Sun 28-Mar-21 12:45:07

Nanna8 the population is increasing at an horrendous rate. "Pearls" are obviously out of fashion.?

Daisend1 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:46:27

I have heard of many things ie places /people /events
Where ?/who?/when ? is a different matter.

Oldwoman70 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:47:25

I am another who must have led a "sheltered" life, I had never heard of pearl necklace and only learned about teabagging when watching the Deadpool films!

However, to get back to the OP - I was talking to a young(er) woman about the various jobs I had and mentioned I used a Telex machine to send messages to America - I had to explain that it was a bit like an email but more complicated!

Damdee Sun 28-Mar-21 12:47:57

I do know what a pearl necklace is but there are other things mentioned on here that I have not heard of. If we all knew everything then a show like Who Wants to be a Millionaire wouldn't be worth putting on as everyone would be able to answer every question!

I did think it was funny once when a group I was with were talking about the Domesday Book, and a young woman said 'I haven't read it - is it good?'

Bunty Sun 28-Mar-21 12:48:34

OMG have just Googled it!!

Ro60 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:52:11

This has set me thinking. Here's a few more

In Russia they seed the clouds before a bank holiday to ensure good weather.

At the park with a friend I was surprised she didn't know what a Mallard duck was - She's a doctor!

My DDs didn't know what a mantle-piece was until we moved house - they were 8 & 12.

20 years ago OH didn't believe China would become a super-power.

poshpaws Sun 28-Mar-21 12:57:33

Biscuitmuncher thank you, I was feeling a bit down and this thread has really cheered me up - have to admit to doing a lot of googling though!

skunkhair63 Sun 28-Mar-21 12:58:30

Sunlover

When I was teaching a ten year old was heard talking about tea bagging. Very few of the staff had ever heard of it ( me included). A younger member of staff enlightened us. ??

Oh God! Wish I hadn't Googled that!!
