Well my children are in their early twenties and I was talking about the big ship stuck in the Suez Canal. To which they all said "The what!" I just can't believe they've never heard of it

My MIL said she sometimes hear people refer to the F word. What does it stand for? So I spelt it out for her. She looked baffled and said, what does that mean!!! I didt go into any more details!

A telex machine! I was telling my youngest grandson my first job was at a publisher who printed their books in Czechoslovakia, and that I was 'chatting' on the telex machine to a friend in Prague when the Russian tanks rolled into the square beneath her office window. He wasn't much interested in the invasion but was fascinated that someone as old as me had used an early form of emailing!

Nannan2 I don’t remember there ever being so much as a single snigger, even from the men, when this term is used.
We must be such innocents!

Ro60. I remember reading about a daughter asking her mum why she had written LOL at the end of the message she had written on a sympathy card for a friend.
She, also, thought that it meant ‘Lots of love’
Just imagine her friend’s reaction if she had sent it!

GreenGran78- maybe you should have a quiet word with whomever is making those choir concert announcements???

Nannan2 Sun 28-Mar-21 14:20:59

Isn't someone on GN down as 'teabagging'??....??

Supergran1946 Sun 28-Mar-21 14:19:08

Anyone remember when you wanted to go on holiday in a b&b, you bought a copy of The Lady, that advertised bed and breakfast places and cottages to let. You then had to phone or write to them for a brochure, then once that arrived
contact the chosen place to obtain availability. Now booking a holiday is all done by pressing a few buttons ??

GreenGran78 Sun 28-Mar-21 14:14:13

I have realised that I have led a very sheltered life. I will also firmly suppress any mental images that arise when the ladies in my choir are told that a concert will be a ‘pearl necklace occasion!’

Nannan2 Sun 28-Mar-21 14:13:56

I did also have to google it and usually I'm worldly wise- is it a new kind of slang term then?Good Heavens indeed ladies! ?

As a young Girl Guide aged about 11 in the mid 1960’s on a seaside coach trip in our uniforms (and proud of all the badges I had earned and sewn on my uniform)....stumbled across a shop selling huge fluorescent pin on badges. I remember skipping happily through town with “Orgy Organiser” proudly on my chest, had no idea why people were laughing and pointing or why my DD nearly chocked on his false teeth in shock when I got home...

More recently I genuinely, honestly thought that Friend With Benefit (FWB) was a genuine sort of domestic trade exchange thing....chap will do some jobs round my house, in return I do some jobs for him ?. I stopped looking for one and deleted my browsing history after that.

Mirren Sun 28-Mar-21 14:08:52

I hadn't heard that one either ?
How innocent am I ?

jenpax Sun 28-Mar-21 14:07:33

Just looked up tea bagging!wish I hadn't?

jenpax Sun 28-Mar-21 14:01:17

Another who has had a sheltered upbringing?

Growing0ldDisgracefully Sun 28-Mar-21 13:58:00

Oh lord. I've only reached screen 3 so far (short break from other things) and already have a long list of things to Google. And there I was thinking I had a fairly extensive knowledge of naughty phrases and words!

Estrellita Sun 28-Mar-21 13:55:53

What are budgie smugglers? I told my friend she was a femme fatale, and she said "what's that?"

nannypiano Sun 28-Mar-21 13:42:31

Please could someone write a list of these words and sayings with their meanings. I'm 75 and led a very sheltered life, not knowing a lot of them. I hope I am not alone.

Joesoap

OMG just looked up both of these terms and I am disgusted, I am glad I have been innocent until now.

Yes Joesoap. The worst thing is, you can’t ‘un-know’ them. When I occasionally wear my Wedding Anniversary pearls, I’ll wonder what people might think.

craftynan Sun 28-Mar-21 13:39:38

Getting back on track, I was watching Martin Kemp and his son, Roman, on their DNA journey the other evening. Martin was amazed when he found out that Roman had never heard of Stephenson’s Rocket.

Joesoap Sun 28-Mar-21 13:33:24

Must look up pearl necklace, also tea bagging, today is obviously a very educational day on GN.

Yammy Sun 28-Mar-21 13:31:54

I'm 70+ quite broad-minded and I've never heard of a pearl necklace except in the literal.
I have heard of the Suez canal though. Can remember my father getting standby orders from the Navy to go to the troubles in the '50s.

hicaz46 Sun 28-Mar-21 13:30:28

Obviously the term pearl necklace has been ‘hijaculated’ by younger people!!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 28-Mar-21 13:10:55
I didn’t know whether to ask the AC what was tea - bagging or Google, thank goodness I Googled ?

Me too! YUCK!

Hilarybee Sun 28-Mar-21 13:21:46

Years ago when our daughter was a teenager my husband and I were getting ready to go round to some friends for dinner. I innocently asked her what a swingers party was as I had been reading an article in a magazine earlier in the day (pre google). Her face was a picture and she said she didn’t know. But looking back now I can see she did know but didn’t know what to say in reply ?
