Hello Everyone
Mine was 'Once Upon a Time' by Simple Minds (an LP).

It was 1985 and I was 13, so quite old really. It was the Summer holidays.
It cost £4.50 from whichever shop was WHSmith before it became WHSmith in Stourbridge.

I've no idea why I chose it. I think that I might have thought it was cool.
I was quite young for my age then. It must have been a bit of a quiet period for my mom and dad, just before I became a bit of a parental nightmare! ?

What was your first record?

Guy Mitchell ‘Singin’ the blues’. I think I must be a lot older than most of you!

Monster Mash - Bobby Pickets & the Crypt Kickers. Cost 49p in Woolworths I remember

It would have been either an Adam Faith one or a Freddie and the Dreamers one - probably a Freddie one.

Ride a White Swan, T Rex, 1970

Ever lasting love by Love affair.

OMG, FC, you are younger than my sons and when they were your age, one of them filled the house with Prince; and the other bought Queen. Nothing quite like royalty!
When I got a record player for my 21st, in 1961, I went out and bought Beethoven's Archduke Trio.

Fishpieplease

FannyCornforth...think the shop you’re referring to in Stourbridge was Mark and Moody’s

I think that you are right!
Thank you very much Fishpie

Never had a record player when young. My DH, when he was my boyfriend, bought me ‘Which Way You Going Billy? by The Poppy Family, and I think we bought one then, probably about 1971.
I really liked that record, thought it very mournful and sad.

Mony Mony by Tommy James and the Shondells.
6/6d from Jill Hanson's Coventry 1968.
My dad had a redundancy payout and gave me and my brother pocket money for the first time.
He bought Fire by The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown.
We played them to death on our newly acquired Dansette record player.

At the Hop by Danny and the Juniors. Still can’t hear that recording without getting up and dancing.

My Sweet Lord by George Harrison. Already had records my dad had bought - Shirley Bassey and Tony Bennett. Still love those to this day.

We were given a second hand record player by an uncle and allowed to choose a single each. I chose Ride A White Swan by T Rex, I was about 10 years old. I did get to see Marc Bolan when a friend and I went to the television studios to see a programme being made (some thing like Ready,Steady Go). Whilst I was young and naive and thought he was wonderful, sadly on recordings I can see that he was high as a kite and actually looked quite unwell

Sugar Baby Love by The Rubettes. No idea why. It's quite dreadful. My 13 year old ears must have loved it though.

Trisha57 Thu 08-Apr-21 08:07:59

"I Want You Back" by the Jackson Five. It was an ex-juke box record that didn't have a middle! You could buy the middle bit separately grin

grandmajet Thu 08-Apr-21 08:02:57

Do you remember when you could go into a booth in a record shop to hear the latest records before you bought them? Or didn’t buy them!
I think singles were 6s8d at the time.

Jaffacake2 Thu 08-Apr-21 07:52:54

I went to London with my brother to a new record shop in Oxford street called Virgin. It was over another shop and sold records at a discounted price. I bought Teaser and the Firecat by Cat Stevens from a young long haired man called Richard Branson.
I wonder what happened to him ?!!!
