Les died yesterday aged only 65. Jim Steinman a few days ago aged 72 I think.

Great article about Jim and Les in the Guardian

I was desperate to see the Bat Out Of Hell musical and persuaded my reluctant daughter to come with me. She was completely blown away by it, and went to see it a further four times, once going up to London for the last performance before it finished! It was her sad text that informed me Jim S had died.

The three remaining Rollers....when did we all get so OLD!

*Fanny*, it wouldn't have been quite the same really!

No, but it would have been interesting!

Most people including me have heard of Meatloaf I really loved his performances and songs but I rarely know who wrote songs for groups or singers
Bay city rollers, far too young for me, they came on the scene when my eldest was 10ish so not in my era I remember buying her some tartan trousers and she fell down and put a whole in them first time she was heart broken I bought a bay city roller badge and sewed it over the hole I don’t suppose there were ever the same though I think it was a short lived love affair for her ?

FannyCornforth Sat 24-Apr-21 15:16:44

Yes Kitty, if only Jim had written for the Rollers!

kittylester Sat 24-Apr-21 15:09:19

Bay City Rollers and Jim Steinman are a bit of a funny juxtaposition.

SueDonim Sat 24-Apr-21 15:07:10

That’s a funny image, Fanny, of your Dh tucked up in a bed next to Mr Loaf, tucked up in his (supersized!) bed! grin

For those who haven’t heard of Jim Steinman (or ML) another of his songs, perhaps his biggest, is Total Eclipse of the Heart, by Bonny Tyler.

Funnily enough Ro, it was Donnington where Meat Loaf was performing when he had to visit the DRI.

Ro60 Sat 24-Apr-21 10:38:27

Bye bye baby - such catchy tunes.
I was at middle school & my friend went to see them at Donnington (Leics). My parents wouldn't let me go.
She jumped in the lake to swim over to them!
Les was my favourite.
Tartan trousers and scarves. ? happy memories

Mr Loaf who has not died, I must reiterate

FannyCornforth Sat 24-Apr-21 10:23:32

During one of his numerous trips to A&E at Derby Royal Infirmary; DH found himself in the next bed to Mr Loaf

welbeck Sat 24-Apr-21 00:20:12

i'd never heard of them either.
i had heard the name meatloaf, but assumed it was a group rather than an individual.
anyway, condolences to those who are affected.

SueDonim Fri 23-Apr-21 22:34:11

Meat Loaf hasn’t died. It’s the songwriter who wrote many of Meat Loaf’s hits who has died.

ML’s name given at birth was Marvin but he apparently changed it to Michael some years ago.

BlueBelle Fri 23-Apr-21 22:26:18

I didn’t know who they were either lucca not familiar with either name
The rollers were later my daughter was into them for about a year when she was about 10;
I thought meatloafs name was Michael something or other I didn’t know he’d died I loved his voice

Grandma70s

I’ve never heard of them either.

How ? They were huge!!!!!

Lucca Fri 23-Apr-21 21:57:32

Casdon

Loved both the Rollers and Meatloaf. I was so obsessed with the Bat out of Hell album, I wore it out and had to get a second copy. I could sing it word for word now - how sad is that.

Lucca I can’t believe you haven’t heard of Meatloaf, Bat out of Hell is one of the all time best selling albums worldwide?

I have heard of Meatloaf yes !

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Apr-21 20:51:10

I once had tickets to see Meatloaf when we lived in France, but he got ill and had to cancel the concert.

Then I had tickets to see him in Edinburgh, and I flew home early from a work conference in the US so I wouldn't miss the concert. And it got cancelled while I was in the air!

Finally got to see him about 10 years ago. It was spectacular. Oh, those songs.

I'm going to look for that Steinman song Gannygangan.

kittylester Fri 23-Apr-21 20:34:18

I have seen Meatloaf lots of times and absolutely love Jim Steinman.

My three daughters and I used to sing Paradise by the Dashboard Light regularly while making Sunday lunch especially if there was a new boyfriend around. Sort of a Rite of Passage for them.

Grandma70s Fri 23-Apr-21 18:23:28

I’ve never heard of them either.

SueDonim Fri 23-Apr-21 18:18:22

I wasn’t a Bay City Rollers fan, although I knew Les’s name and am sorry he’s died. flowers

I love Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf. We too saw him live at the Playhouse in Edinburgh. Once seen, never forgotten and I’m glad Meat didn’t take his ‘tap aff’! grin. Fabulous gig. We’ve since been having a bit of a ML-fest in this house. Dial the sound up to eleven!

Thanks for the songs and the memories, Mr Steinman. smile

Gannygangan Fri 23-Apr-21 17:58:22

Ah yes, Paradise by the Dashboard Light. Brilliant lyrics.

Jim did a song on Bad for Good called, Love and Death and an American Guitar

I recall the first time I heard it and my reaction at the end.

FannyCornforth Fri 23-Apr-21 17:43:43

Brrroom brrroom!

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Apr-21 17:18:48

Bat Out of Hell came out when I was 16, it was the soundtrack to my youth. Paradise by the Dashboard Light, oh me. Like you Casdon, I remember all the words. A few years ago we saw Meatloaf live and sang along to all Steinman's songs.

On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses....

As for BCR, I was a Derek fan. Like I said on another thread, I once sat outside Derek's childhood home in Edinburgh hoping he'd come and visit his mum. He never did.
