Jim Steinman’s name might not be that familiar to people as he was a composer rather than a performer. I remember a Sky Arts programme about the making of Bat Out of Hell and Jim was featured heavily as the creator of the whole album. Very talented musician. I’m hoping Sky might repeat it now that he’s gone.

Another little memory from just a few months ago was a little girl reviewing her dad’s record collection and she chose Bat and her favourite track was Paradise by the Dashboard Light. The radio presenter asked her what she thought it was about ?
and she said it was about a girl asking her boyfriend if he loved her and him saying “let me sleep on it”
Still some blessed innocence about.

Brilliant story Whatdayisit

Whatdayisit Mon 26-Apr-21 14:48:05

Oh no i hadn't heard about Jim Steinman passing away. He did some great stuff asides Bat Out of Hell.
My brother had the album originally and of course i wasn't allowed to touch it or even buy my own copy just listen to it through the walls.
When i bought a CD player in 1990 that was the first CD i bought i never had it off in 1991 i listened constantly while pregnant with my Son. Had it on when my waters burst and my son came out 55 mins later literally like A Bat out of Hell.

One of the greatest songs that still sounds new when you hear it. RIP Jim Steinman

I just love Meat loaf songs. Saw him once and it was a a amazing experience , even if he was no longer in his first flush of youth! Think I need a Meatloaf song at my funeral!!!!

FannyCornforth Mon 26-Apr-21 13:13:27

There wouldn't be band members as such - they'd be session musicians I think.
I saw Meatloaf twice.
Once at the MEN Arena (brilliant)
and again at Chatsworth (diabolical).

Aepgirl Mon 26-Apr-21 13:10:53

Casdon, I’ve heard of Meatloaf, but couldn’t tell you the names of the band members.

It's so sad when my teenage heroes are going. The rollers were the first band I saw live. I took my son to see Meatloaf, his first ever concert at the NEC Birmingham. So many great memories. I must be getting old hmm

Jim Steinman was an amazing songwriter not only for Meatloaf but Bonnie Tyler and Celine Dion too.
I was never a Rollers fan - I'm still trying to cope with the death of David Cassidy!!!

mimismo Mon 26-Apr-21 11:48:24

We had, a BCR dress up party at uni in the late 70s and they came for a concert too I believe.

So sad to hear about Les. I saw him a few years ago at a benefit concert, it was a small venue down by the marina where I live. It was in a large marquee and the place was rocking, the screams of The Roller fans was brilliant, all waving their tartan scarves. He put on a great show. Bye Bye Les.

missdeke Mon 26-Apr-21 11:23:03

Not particularly a fan of Bay city rollers, but Jim Steinman was a songwriting genius, not only songs for Meatloaf but he also wrote for Bonnie Tyl.er, I too love the Bat out of Hell album

Moggycuddler Mon 26-Apr-21 11:12:12

Both figures from my youth too. Very sad.

Dearknees1 Mon 26-Apr-21 11:12:08

Meatloaf - Marvin Lee Aday - is still alive. Jim Steinman was the man behind the music. A brilliant pairing of genius. Rock meets theatre. Their music has stood the test of time. For me the Bay City Rollers aren't in the same league. They were the boy band beloved of the teenager girls I taught in the 70s. I know they will be very sad.

Old age how can we not be nostalgic about brilliant people

Casdon Sun 25-Apr-21 19:17:06

Of course*kittylester*!
The final paragraph of the article summed it up so perfectly.
‘Steinman, in particular, understood that supposedly ordinary lives are full of drama. And supposedly ordinary people harbour inner drama queens. And that, in many ways, this is the best of us and we will always want and need to access it. So thank you (with no caveat) for the music, gentlemen. And, just as importantly, thank you for the drama.’

kittylester Sun 25-Apr-21 18:56:08

Presumably that was about a BCR album?

SueDonim Sun 25-Apr-21 18:54:24

Love this from the article Gannygangan If the title track doesn’t make you want to ride a motorbike along a clifftop with your hair on fire, nothing will. grin

Alegrias1 Sun 25-Apr-21 18:21:39

Great article gannygangan.
