Son doing up old house has come across this nest in the rafters just inside the window.
Anyone know what it might be.

It looks like a wasps nest to me. Please be careful, it might be in use.

It looks like a massive wasp nest to me. I mean, a very large nest made by wasps, not by one huge wasp!
Hornets maybe?
I hope whatever made it has moved house.

Wasps I think. You have to get a specialist to remove it.

Callistemon Tue 27-Apr-21 15:54:17

Is it a huge wasps' nest?

Or a hornets' nest?

Fleur20 Tue 27-Apr-21 15:54:56

Amazing wasp nest... hopefully they have moved out!

Can you post pictures as it is dismantled please??

LauraNorder Tue 27-Apr-21 15:55:39

False alarm, it seems it’s a wasps nest. Thanks anyway.

Mapleleaf Tue 27-Apr-21 15:56:54

Yes it certainly looks like a wasp or hornet nest. They don't use old nests, apparently, but if it's still in use, the insects will be flying around it, so be careful. If it is still in use, it will need to be dealt with professionally.

Thanks, didn’t expect such fast answers. I’ll let him know you all want pics of inside the nest if empty and him in A &E if not.

Mapleleaf Tue 27-Apr-21 15:58:51

Sorry, Ellen, crossed posts ?.

Much appreciated Laura!! These things fascinate me!

Wasps abandon their nests at the end of the season, when they all die. The queen does not return to the nest the following year. We found about half a dozen in various parts of our roof when we moved in and had a live one on several occasions.

Works of art, preferably admired when vacant!

BlueBelle Tue 27-Apr-21 16:37:00

They look beautiful inside when empty really intricate and a work of art

JaneJudge Tue 27-Apr-21 16:40:40

gosh it's massive!

Marmight Tue 27-Apr-21 16:45:42

Definitely a wasp ‘byke’. Looks an old one. We found a huge one when demolishing an old kitchen, an amazingly intricate work of art! I was going to take it to the local school fir the children to see but sadly one of the builders managed to drop it?

Oh, I was expecting to hear that there was a dinosaur egg in there - Jurassic Park live on TV.

I'm really disappointed now.

Callistemon Tue 27-Apr-21 18:24:17

Can we expect more photos of the nest?
?

LauraNorder Tue 27-Apr-21 19:00:33

He has since found another four, thankfully all vacant. I have asked for internal photos to share.
It’s a recently purchased 1930’s property, empty for five years so they’ll have a ball demolishing some hideous modernisation attempts and retaining the lovely doors, skirtings and some remaining picture rails.
The garden is huge and overgrown with shrubs and trees, I may appear on the gardening threads when he wants something identified.
My sons are very impressed with the wealth of experience and knowledge on Gransnet and the immediate responses.

We found one in the loft of our 1930s house when we first moved in (many years ago). It was an absolute work of art; paper thin and very fragile with a beautiful honeycomb design. It's hard to imagine that a wasp (or bee) could be responsible for making such a thing of beauty!

ixion Tue 27-Apr-21 19:28:48

I'd submit it as an entry to a Tate Modern upcoming exhibition?

Grammaretto Tue 27-Apr-21 19:40:01

It is a big one. They are beautiful creations, made from paper and wasp spit technical term
I had one in my garage years ago and couldn't go inside for the entire Summer. I didn't want to destroy it. It grew as big as a football too. Your DS's looks enormous.

Shandy57 Tue 27-Apr-21 20:09:12

I had never had wasps nests until I moved into a rental cottage with a garage where I was storing all my possessions. The garage had a tin roof, and evidence of many abandoned wasps' nests, I used to spray it regularly to avoid new nests being built after finding a 'golf ball' sized one.

I would never remove honey or bumble bee nests, but I did have a wasps nest killed in the roof of the rental cottage just above the bathroom window. I felt very badly doing it, wasps are part of the circle of life and very useful to gardeners, but I was frightened they'd come into the house. I used to work at the RNIB in Notting Hill Gate, the college was housed in two beautiful old buildings. One day I went into the toilet and the toilet seat was covered in wasps - luckily I found it, not a student.

Not being alarmist (yes I am!) but there seems to be a proliferation of adders this year for some reason.

LauraNorder Wed 28-Apr-21 08:51:03

Thanks Callistemon, I’ll pass on the adder warning. Better safe than sorry.
Along with the dry rot, wet rot, woodworm, possible asbestos, blown plaster, disintegrating bricks and cracked terrazzo floor they’ll be fine. It’s a lovely house!
