Cream or jam first

I always break scones , never cut . As far as I knew it was the correct way to do it, and indicated that is was perfectly baked . If they don’t break open they are not worth eating

I have never in my life heard of braking a scone open, what is more I haven't ever seen anyone silly enough to do it. how on earth do jam and cream the crumbly bits of scone that would be scattered all over your plate.

Obviously a man who buys cheapy bread scones from cheap supermarkets.

I remember learning that cutting a bread roll was ‘lower class’, but I didn’t know it applied to scones.
Breaking apart some I’ve had would leave me with a pile of crumbs and nothing to spread my jam and cream on either way.

Does it matter? It tastes the same which ever way you spread it.

I'd rather have a Welsh cake, spread with butter. Delicious!

I watched that etiquette expert (William Hanson) on TV at the weekend. He said there are far more important issues than jam or cream first, the main one being that you should never CUT the scone in half. You should always break it apart.

I think it might be fun to serve up a cream tea to all the G7 people in Cornwall this month. Not quite sure what they would make of it!

If you are using real clotted cream then the cream has to go on first as it takes the place of butter. Absolutely scrumptious, any cream less than clotted just doesn't seem right.

We serve scones for teas for the National Garden Scheme openings of our garden.

My husband makes the scones, we cut them in half, butter them, jam them, and as the customers ask for them put on whipped cream and a half of a strawberry on on each half of the scone. Every one is happy. No one has ever asked for them in a different order but we are not using clotted cream. Some times they do not want butter or cream.

(Real) butter, strawberry jam, topped off with Rhodda's clotted cream on a PLAIN scone. This is correct.

Jam first, otherwise it all gets too messy.

I generally decide which to put on first according to the consistency of the cream when it is served. Proper clotted cream is like butter and I would put that on first but often it is more like thick double cream, in which case it has to go on last. I always eat the two halves separately, in order to consume as much jam and cream as possible. Sorry, very piggy l know!
