My kind son visited me yesterday bringing, as always, a mixed bunch of flowers from the florist - an incongruous mix of types and colours. I thanked him, put them in a vase, and have since separated them into a number of smaller vases. Why are
florists' mixed bunches so horrid?

DH randomly orders flowers for me from a local florist who delivers ( which is part of the lovely surprise.) Expensive but her bouquets are always different, beautiful and long lasting.
Sometimes she does a colour theme, sometimes contrasts of colours. or "shapes and textures". He leaves that up to her afaik.. Then she dolls up her creation with some pretty wraps and ribbons. The delivery guy at my door always has a big grin on his face.

No danger of fobbing us off with the leftovers; she's cultivating a great customer with great service.

In between florist extravagances he'll sometimes come back from the supermarket shopping with a bunch of daffs, or irises or tulips, which he likes to hide behind his back then whip them out (another surprise) and deliver with a kiss.

Lovely man.

Decades aho, my first Saturday job was in a florists, and I've always tried to support local shops wherever I've lived. However flowers? I give up.
A while ago a friend was poorly, a few of us chipped in a fiver each. I went to the local florist, explained the situation, said I'd leave the choice to her, and pick them up in the morning. Tgey were wrapped ordinarily, looked fine, but when the friend's husband put them in a vase, I was so embarrassed. It was just a few stems. I'd have been embarrassed if they'd just come from me, but this was a group gift.
Now? Local M&S or Waitrose are near, and nice for a gift. But most supermarket flowers last well and look good.

I feel about mismatched overcoloured bunches of flowers as I would if I received an expensive book by an author I dislike and never read or an item of clothing I will never wear.
Just disappointed for the "giver". I suppose at least books or clothes don't die and can be passed on eventually. And of course if you say how lovely etc you may get similar again.
What a minefield!!!

I think florists, as opposed to Supermarkets, make arrangement s as specified by the purchaser, therefore they have odd bunches of flowers left over which have to be used. However, I am grateful for any bunches I receive, whatever the colour and content.

Yes, jam jars, candles, bows - all very simple and rustic. Not sure if I will grow the flowers myself, but will certainly try. 😊

Thank you *HelterSkelter1. I prefer simple arrangements. My son’s fiancée has asked me to do the table decorations for their wedding in July. She likes wild flowers! 💐

Oh how lovely Patsy70, they always look so very pretty in simple jam jars with a little gingham bow too sunshine

Thats lovely, are you going to grow the flowers yourself? Yes jam jars with some string or bows will look amazing smile

Just love tulips when they swoonsmile

leeds22 Sat 31-Jan-26 13:04:18

My birthday is just after Valentine's Day. On the rare occasion a DS sends me flowers the bunch usually contains a good number of left over red roses which are certainly past their best. I never mention it - I might not get any more!

HelterSkelter1 Sat 31-Jan-26 12:55:32

Patsy70.both those vase fulls are lovely. The same type of flower together. Always look good even if different colours.
It's the expensive bunch of assorted flowers and lots of greenery I find disappointing. I love a bunch of daffodils or tulips and would rather buy my own and do buy my own. . I just find it sad for someone to spend a lot of money on something imported and lacking perfume.

Patsy70 Sat 31-Jan-26 12:06:56

From a friend, just for giving her a lift! 😊

Patsy70 Sat 31-Jan-26 11:35:56

That is so kind of your son jeanrobinson. My sister bought me these Tulips from Lidl Grammaretto. The gift of flowers is always very much appreciated. 💐

Grammaretto Sat 31-Jan-26 10:37:34

Exactly BlueBelle 😄
I have to buy my own. 😟
I was given an amaryllis for Christmas and it hasn't begun to grow despite being repotted.
My friend's DD is a florist with a shop and works incredibly hard. It looks beautiful. Both her parents are botanists.

BlueBelle Sat 31-Jan-26 07:54:30

I think those people being picky are those that get regular flowers I probably get two or three bunches a year and I love them whatever colour shape size or variety they are

Grammaretto Sat 31-Jan-26 01:50:21

I was tempted by tulips in Lidl and am thrilled that they haven't flopped much. must have had tulip viagra

My local florist is good but a bit expensive for everyday.

Five year old thread but maybe interesting to compare notes on what we love or hate about flower bouquets?
I tend to like softer colours, pinks, creams and white for example or all blue.
The absolute worst for me are strident yellows reds and orange with lots of hard twig type stuff or metallic or too much greenery generally or those garage forecourt type bouquets.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 30-Jan-26 13:03:28

I also dislike mixed flowers and loads of twiggy leaves. I would rather have a plant or at this time of the year flowering bulbs in a pot.
They are an expensive gift and a faff to find suitable vases. I expect there are GNs who would be delighted to have a bouquet...but not I.
I once had a bunch delivered which were half dead. My friend asked what they were like and I had to tell her to save her buying more for other people from the same company.

My last bunch delivered a week or so ago had roses with no perfume whatsoever. I would have preferred daffodils. I did say thank you politely of course but was underwhelmed by them and they would have been expensive.

I like sending and receiving the MS Afternoon Tea pack. Much better way to say I Love You or Get well Soon than a bunch of mismatched flowers.

Suzieque66 Fri 30-Jan-26 12:56:30

I was a florist ... When I used to ask customers what type of flowers and the colour they would say " Oh anything ... for about £25 ...Men have absolutely no idea about colours, types etc ,,,they dont know a Sweet Pea from a Dahlia !

RosiesMawagain Fri 30-Jan-26 12:56:29

Isn't it the thought that counts?

paddyann54 Fri 30-Jan-26 12:42:24

I prefer yellow and white flowers and the family and friends always send what Iike.
The only time I buy different is buying a big bunch of gypsophila and slotting a few large white daisies among them.
They look beautiful and very innocent and are my usual gift to a new mum

Basgetti Fri 30-Jan-26 09:18:49

Sorry but that seems petty. You were given flowers, just be thankful 🤷‍♀️

We always order from b and m flowers, yes the discount shop. Excellent. You choose exactly which bouquet you want from pictures on the website, in 3 sizes and get exactly what you order. Very reasonable prices and delivered in a plain box, b and m not mentioned.

BlueBelle Fri 30-Jan-26 08:41:36

Lucky you and well done son
