Why do clothes manufacturers make their labels out of nasty, scratchy stuff? (Especially the ones at the back of the neck...)

mimismo Wed 12-May-21 11:35:13

I always cut scratchy labels from the necks of new clothes, or from the side seam, but often end up with a hole because the labels are incorporated into the, seam, not stitched on after, so to remove the label you end up opening the, seam. So frustrating!!

Why do so many glass jars containing jam, lemon curd, tartare or horseradish sauce all have curvy sides, instead of straight?
You waste some of the product, even if you use a teaspoon to try and scrape it all out.

(I have probably answered my own question).

Good for sales.

And the square jars of garlic, ginger, chilli - you can never get it all out

One unanswered question in our house is why do they not use the same adhesive for supposedly resealable packs of rice and pasta (that aren't) as the really strong stuff they use for the price labels you can never get off things you've bought as gifts? Perhaps they could just swap them over and save us all a lot of trouble?

And the stickers that they put on the front of books !!

The thing that annoys me is when I buy scissors and they have a tag going through the handle loops so you need scissors to open the new scissors

Opposite....why are so many skirts/trouser sold with no tapes to hang on a normal hanger? I even had to sew tapes on a set of new teatowels recently

Just bought a pack of Sloggi knickers and the labels in there are huge. They are really long and when you cut them out they unfold to about the size of a medium' post it' note. Have cut them all out dreadfully itchy things!

Jillsewing Wed 12-May-21 10:45:08

What a good question. I hate them and they bring me out In a rash I cut them out and they are cut to leave nothing behind, and why are there so many sometimes 5 in one garment. I even started looking before I buy! And why oh why in knickers so many. Sorry you have got me started now!

Quizzer Wed 12-May-21 10:41:31

Often the label is soft and silky until you wash the garment. This is when it turns into something resembling barbed wire!

I use those thin ribbons to hand tie bunches of flowers from the garden when giving them to friends.

And here was me thinking the topic was Life's unanswered questions....

Kim19 Wed 12-May-21 06:45:01

Alexa, you turned that back to topic beautifully. Very slick. I'm still grinning. Thanks

JulieNoted we bought some long handled teaspoons.

They aren't great quality but useful for tall jars eg coffee etc

Why are large jars/tins of coffee, hot chocolate and so on always taller than the small jars instead of fatter? It makes it impossible to reach the bottom with a teaspoon - surely a jar the same height, but wider would be more sensible?

And why are Schwarz herb and spice jars too narrow to get a teaspoon in? I avoid that brand as much as possible now, it's so irritating.

Redhead56 Tue 11-May-21 17:29:51

Hate the tags and the loops on outfits Lovetopaint037 you had me in stitches over your nightie!

ExD Tue 11-May-21 17:20:42

Hilarious Alexa I'm still laughing!

JaneJudge Tue 11-May-21 12:29:11

Alexa

Yes, they do. And they would also suffer skin irritation from any scratchy labels in their rugs or saddles.

oh no sad !

grandtanteJE65 Tue 11-May-21 11:35:08

Any dolls' dressmaker loves those narrow ribbon loops. They can be used for everything from the satin ribbons of Barbie's ballet shoes to the ribbon round the neck of minuture teddies!

Blossoming Tue 11-May-21 11:31:02

Tags, not rags.

Blossoming Tue 11-May-21 11:30:07

Alexa

Sometimes I cut holes in nice new jumpers due to cutting out the nasty scratchy label. I'd pay a little more for a soft satin label or a species of cotton part- lining that has the writing on it. I have actually made cotton part-lining for the back of the neck of two M and S jumpers.

Some clothing has the maker's label printed directly on to the back of the neck and that is really successful. Probably could not be done with knitted jumpers.

Use a seam ripper to uptick them. This really annoys me when the stitching is super tight. Also hate those abominable plastic rags used to hold pairs of socks or gloves together.

Tizliz Tue 11-May-21 11:29:44

Why can’t clothing manufacturers have standard sizes, where a 10 means a 10? They can do it for shoes.

Tizliz Tue 11-May-21 11:25:01

Why have Bird's Eye Peas changed from zip bags to resealable bags?

So fiddly compared to the zip bags.

So agree, stand there for ages trying to seal them

Alexa Tue 11-May-21 11:22:00

I was wondering this morning, there are so many ponies in fields by motorways and busy A roads, do they suffer respiratory problems because of the fumes and fuel emissions ?
