I am not an early riser. The reason that I am posting this at
6 am is because I haven't slept a wink.
When I get around to reading the discussions I find the larks among you have filled up to seven pages.
I wonder how I got the impression that 'Larks' feel superior to us 'Owls'
'The early bird catches the worm' is a lofty saying by Larks, but I don't know if there are any such sayings by Owls, I can only remember :
A wise old owl sat on an oak
The more he saw the less he spoke,
The less he spoke the more he heard
Why can't we all be like that wise old bird
Even if we do sleep until mid-morning!
In bed by 11!
Up at 7 when on work day 9-9.30 non working day. My dogs don't rise until I do so no rush. Always been an owl which was great in my 20's when out clubbing til all hours. Usually in bed by 14 but rarely get to sleep before 1 am. Have been known to start decorating at 10pm and still be at it at 3am but these days would rather pay someone else to do it. Definately an owl ?
I wish I could sleep to around 8am - but after years of getting up to feed horses before work / now we no longer have them I still b...y well wake up early / lately I’ve been waking up around 3am and struggling to get back to sleep - grrr . I am jealous of your ability and not in the least bit superior ??
With a bit of luck it’s usually between 7.30 and 8.30 when I getup. Normally after doing 20 mins of lying down exercises. Normally go to bed at 11pm with another 2 min exercise schedule before settling down
Hi I’m definitely an owl. Plus I take a lot of arthritis meds that made me tired in the mornings. I told the doc... she well if you don’t have to get up for anything then just enjoy it! So I do xx
Bedtime is usually around 11pm and I get up at 6am summer or winter. I’m definitely a lark.
The alarm goes off at 6am, and I get up at about 6.15am. Downstairs to make a cup of tea, then into the shower. By the time I'm dried off and dressed, the tea is at drinking temperature.
I then have the arduous commute to work (the next door bedroom) and I'm at work for 7am.
I've always woken up fairly early so I guess I am more of a lark than an owl.
I’m the same as you farawaygran I’m a night owl and get up around 8.30ish. Never been a good sleeper and don’t need more than 6 hours sleep either.
I have a theory that whether you are a 'lark' or an 'owl' relates to the time that you were born. My son and I were both born at four in the morning and do our best work before lunch.
My other son was born in the evening and he can work well into the night, being more of a nocturnal animal!
For me the best time of the day is early morning, both in summer and winter!
Another of Monica’s extreme owls here. Like others have mentioned, I get almost exactly 8 hours sleep, but find myself most awake about 11 pm, when I find myself feeling like starting some task. Will now often lie awake enjoying being warm and cosy and “meditating” after waking, often till 10-11am or later, and I really struggle if I have to get up by 8am for some reason, as I just don’t get off to sleep properly if I go to bed before midnight. Whereas at 2-3am, I sleep when my head touches the pillow till I wake 7-8 hours later. I get really annoyed when people I am not expecting to phone ring between 8 and 9 am and wake me from a deep sleep, I wouldn’t dream of ringing them at midnight and would rightly be considered rude to do so! Even when I was working, and had to be there by 8-9.30am, if I had something complicated to do, I’d try to schedule it for later in the morning or early afternoon. But I was also on call overnight and was expected to be up, dressed and functioning then!
I get up around 5.30 go to bed bout 11. Love a cup of coffee first thing n catching up with the news. The older I get the less sleep I need
If I go to be early, I'm awake all night! 1.30 - 2pm is my optimum time (though could carry on longer if in good company!). I wake up about 8.30 and doze on whilst planning my day in my head until 9 - 9.30. Have tried all sorts of things many times, at the behest of friends and family who were all convinced that larkism was better, to change this but all that happened was I got mega tired and ratty, so after 66 years, I now just accept that this is how I am!
(At work we had this training - you categorised your days work into sand, grit, stones and boulders, and dealt with them accordingly - sand was the easy stuff and boulders the really hard stuff. The idea was that Early birds do their boulder work first thing and their sand and grit in the afternoon when they were slowing down. I did my sand tasks first whilst having my first coffee and my boulders just before home time. When I had to work from home for a period it was even better because I could do my "boulder" work at 10pm or later if I wanted - my best time! So you see, it doesn't matter whether you're a lark or an owl, as long as you recognise yourself and plan your days accordingly! There's plenty of room for both!
OH up at 6.00 for work. I stay in bed until the neighbours start moving round in their kitchen, banging doors, usually about 7.00. I can't stay in bed then so get up and have a cup of tea while sitting looking out at the peaceful garden. We are usually on bed by 10.30.
I’m not an early riser as I tend to go to bed very late, when I get up about 10 ish I have to have two cups of tea before I can function, then I’ve wasted most of the morning.
This is unless I have my grandsons sleep over and then I’m up by 7
I get up at 8 am having had about six hours sleep interrupted by going for a wee. Then have breakfast and shower which is a struggle because my arthritis is worse in the morning, before my help comes at 10. These days I am inclined to fall asleep in my chair at any time during the day.
I cannot bear staying in bed and apart from when I was in hospital cannot remember spending a single day in bed.
Bed around 11, though I often listen to an audio book in bed for anything between 30 minutes and an hour. Up around 7.30 weekdays. Around 8.30 weekends.
Leisurely start here. Wake up at various times - anythingbetween 7 and 8.30. Have a cup of tea, check emails, watch breakfast TV. Have breakfast in bed, play a game or two on ipad, have a look at Twitter, possibly read, digest the weather forecast and plan what we are going to do for the day. Get up when we are ready. Usually after 9. Stay in bed longer on Sundays and watch Andrew Marr. What's not to like?
Unless I'm doing Nanna duties when I do the school run, I usually get up 8.30 - 9.am. However I do stay up late 12 -1am watching tv or music on YouTube. I'm retired now so not a slave to the alarm clock ?
I used to work permanent night shift.
When I retired I found it difficult getting to sleep when DH went to bed at 10pm. We have separate rooms now, as we disturb each other when we are together.
I go to bed at 10:30 - 11pm. Usually read for a while and settle by about midnight.
I get up between 8 and 8:30. Sometimes a bit later. Today it was 9am.
Getting up time has changed for us with the arrival of the pandemic. Our radio alarm wakes us with BBC Radio 4 at 5.50am and sometimes I am awake waiting for it! Getting up is a different matter. DH retired very recently but prior to that, on working days was up by 6.30am and leaving the house around 7.30am. Prior to pandemic I took DGD to before school childminder fir 7.45am so up early. Since then it has varied hugely depending on whether school wass closed or open. Currently we take her straight to school for 8.50am so up by 7.30am, except that since last September I have been virtually immobilised by osteoarthritis and am now 3 weeks on from hip replacement so I spend rather a lot more time in bed although awake, as the days seem so long when there are severe limits on what I can do. Still in bed by around 10pm though.
We go to bed around 11.45, read till 12.30 and are awake at 7.00 ish. Mr R complains we go to bed too late, but I have always gone to bed at this time or later. We are up by 8.00, I don't like to waste my own time now I am retired. I certainly sleep more soundly now without the stress.
I’m shocked by all you early birds. If I were up that early I wouldn’t have the energy to fill all those daylight hours with anything productive. There’s only so much physically that I can achieve. We wake early but after tea we read and write in bed. Why not?
Tend to wake up by 9ish. Husband brings up brekkie and his coffee shortly after. Depending on the day we may stay ensconced for a couple more hours. Though having said that I am often doing projects at 9 pm. Rarely asleep before 2 am
Me too. I’m so pleased I’m not the only on on here! It’s just the way my body works. I had to get up early the other day for a delivery and I felt dreadful all day. I say to people I’m not slothful, I get the same amount of sleep as anyone else, just at different times.
Er, it’s 10.47 and I’m still in my dressing gown. ?
I’ve been up for ages, though, reading the paper and doing crosswords etc.
I really am going up for a shower now, though.
