What time do you get up in the morning?

I am not an early riser. The reason that I am posting this at
6 am is because I haven't slept a wink.
When I get around to reading the discussions I find the larks among you have filled up to seven pages.
I wonder how I got the impression that 'Larks' feel superior to us 'Owls'
'The early bird catches the worm' is a lofty saying by Larks, but I don't know if there are any such sayings by Owls, I can only remember :
A wise old owl sat on an oak
The more he saw the less he spoke,
The less he spoke the more he heard
Why can't we all be like that wise old bird
Even if we do sleep until mid-morning! moon

It depends whether I’m having my grandsons before school or not. 06.00 if I am, 08-09.00 in the winter, if not. I don’t sleep well - thank you, Bladder - but these light mornings see me rising earlier than that on my grandson-free days.

I’m still working full time and as a result am very very lazy at weekends !

LovelyLady Sat 15-May-21 10:48:30

I’ve been awake 40mins approx.
I’ve retired and no interest in making the clock my boss.
For many years (50) it was early rising, children, school then my work place.
Now it’s my time - 10am is fine, whenever my eyes open. My husband is an early riser and he’s busy when I’m still in the land of nod. We have a huge bed and I’m oblivious to him getting up ready fir the day.
I’ve retired and living the dream!

I've read that people used to go to bed at sunset and rise at sunrise, but that they were also awake and active in the middle of the night. I'm often awake around 3am and others say they are too.

I am also into extreme larkism, I get up at 04:30 every day.

It started when I developed sleep issues leading to "insomnophobia" and anxiety and depression, following (successful) cancer treatment: either I couldn't get to sleep or I couldn't stay asleep or both.

I decided that instead of lying awake and anxious at 04:30 I'd just get up and get on, and now I'm usually asleep by 21:00 and up at 04:30.

It wouldn't occur to me to think that I was better than an owl but I always feel a sense of having given myself extra hours in the day to enjoy. And in the early days of "Take your dog for a walk as your socially distanced exercise for the day", I was very compliant - I almost never meet a soul.

It’s a long long time since I woke with that warm cosy feeling and could drift off. Although I don’t sleep too badly for some time I have woken 5.30-6.00 with dreadful ‘butterflies’ in my stomach. Sometimes I can deal with this by going to the loo and getting back to bed....but how I wish I could remedy this. Having been made redundant and lost my husband in the last three years I read my paper in the morning which takes ages! Makes me late up which is a bit of a waste of a day!! I know the’butter flies’ is due to fight or flight but not really frightened of anything!
Anyone got any suggestions?!

My DH gets up around 5, I'd prefer to sleep until 8 but we compromise on 7.30. I think he actually likes the time to himself.

Well, I have never been a lark, though my husband is. He’s up, had a run and made some bread by 7.

I don’t go to bed until anywhere between 2 and 4.30 depending, so I usually get up around 10. This has always been my comfortable time. I can be happily pursuing my hobby at 3 am. Watching the hedgehogs or whatever. I see things my husband misses. It takes me hours to get to sleep, especially at the moment when I have insomnia, but also ages to wake.

my theory is that way back, in our cave dwelling days, some people were night owls for a reason. Some of us stayed awake to guard at night, naturally.

I was often bleary eyed at work, and yes, people do make you feel ‘lazy’ etc. But I have accepted it is my natural way. I probably spend less time in bed sleeping than many larks, but I am the one sometimes made to feel ‘bad’ for getting up late. Just go with it.

I wake at 7 and reach for my book. This morning I had to take two painkillers ( neck pain ) and fell back to sleep until 10 am.Could not believe it! Have just taken another two painkillers so no doubt will nap at some point. Neck pain is a real pain in the neck!!

My bladder wakes me at around 6 or 6.30, I make a cup of tea and return to bed until about an hour later. I prefer to get jobs done in the morning when I'm at my best. If I get up too early I start to flag mid-evening.

I don't know whether early risers feel superior any more.

They certainly used to. I spend most of my teenage years and young adulthood being made to feel that it somehow was less virtuous to get up late and go to bed late, which suited me, than to rise early and go to bed early.

I always suspected this attitude came mainly from people whom force of circumstances had turned into early risers. Mothers of infants, or people who had to be at work an hour or so earlier than most others.

I have always been able to be on time for work, whether it started at a time that suited me or the reverse.

I don't understand why anyone should feel it is better to rise early, even if this does not suit you, just in order to be finished with your day's work at an early hour.

Perhaps someone can explain this attitude?

Joesoap Sat 15-May-21 10:37:25

So many early birds on here! I am a wise old owl, usually get up at 9am that is 8am UK time. I never go to bed earlier than midnight, dont always sleep right away, so it maybe 1 am before I drop off.
All my working life I was up early, so now its a treat not to have to.

Alioop Sat 15-May-21 10:36:32

I'm up as soon as I waken, normally between 6 or 7am. The dog is still normally asleep in the hallway and stays there until I coax her to get up for her walk.

M0nica Thu 13-May-21 18:52:24

I usually wake between 6.00am and 6.30am and I am another extreme lark. DD (and one of my aunts) are/were extreme owls.

Left to her self DD gets up around 12.00am and goes to bed around 2.00-3.00am, and at times even later (earlier?).

This caused a lot of problems when she was a teenager because she tells me now she felt neglected. The problem being that while I was happy to talk early in the evening around evening meal time and just after, she really was at her most animated and chatty at 10.00pm and later, at which time I was dead tired and needed to get to bed and certainly did not want to start having long discussions.

Elusivebutterfly Thu 13-May-21 18:39:11

There are so many larks here. I have only ever got up early when I had to for work or small children.
My natural wake up time is around 8.30.

TerriBull Thu 13-May-21 17:52:30

From reading through the various posts, I see I'm quite similar to others often awake at 5.30ish, usually tossing and turning, I really ought to get up and do something. I sometimes get up about 6.30, I am an early morning person but certainly don't feel superior about it, I'm merely following my body clock. I make coffee about 7ish, after which I'm definitely up for the day!

crazyH Thu 13-May-21 17:51:12

Cornishpatsy, so glad I’ve got company - all these Larks !!!!!!
Mind you, I have heard that 5-6a.m is the best time of day....

TrendyNannie6 Thu 13-May-21 17:44:36

6.30am for the last few months, go to bed around 11 to 11.30

ninathenana Thu 13-May-21 17:37:46

I often wake about 5 am ho to the bathroom and go back to bed until 7.30-8.30.

Nanna58 Thu 13-May-21 17:36:10

The time I get up and the time I actually get going are getting furtherand further apart thanks to my Arthritis!!

Kali2 Thu 13-May-21 16:50:40

Alarm goes at 8.10 and then (oh I am so grateful), OH brings me a cup of tea in bed. Exercises, shower- normally turn up downstairs at about 9 for breakfast.

Kate1949 Thu 13-May-21 16:44:49

9 ish. I had 40 years of getting up at 6 am for work. I deserve my lie ins smile

Mapleleaf Thu 13-May-21 16:40:36

Usually, it's between 8 and 9 am, but this can vary if I need to be up for something, or if I'm particularly tired so sleep on. That's the beauty of retirement, no pressure to be up at a given time. When I was working the alarm went off just after 6. Nowadays, there tends to be only one 6 o'clock ?.
