The House of your dreams

What would it be like? One of my daughter's friends has just built the house of her dreams. It is massive, built in sandstone on a couple of acres and each of her 3 children has their own private sitting room, bathroom and bedroom. I don't think I'd actually like that ( not that I could afford it anyway). I like rustic type houses with privacy and a good view . No roads in sight, preferably.

We almost have it! I'm not sure anyone has a "perfect" house! Ours is a three bedroomed bungalow on the road to John O'Groats, in a small village. The back of the house has wonderful views of a castle and the sea! Sadly, two large telephone poles are sited in the back garden - how we didn't see those when viewing I cannot imagine! As we lived 700 miles away before moving here, we couldn't view any more than once. The garden is big, but almost all grass - as the strong winds and sea air mean that flowers and trees are soon "windblown". In common with most houses when you move into them, it needs a new kitchen and bathroom, and we would love a Conservatory looking out at that amazing view! However, it may be some time before we can afford it. It has only been built 16 years, but everything is original and is now coming to the end of it's natural life. The gutters and downpipes want replacing, the windows are OK but could be better, the front door has some damage, there are not enough electric sockets, etc. etc. But that view cheers us up every day!

Thanks Ellianne

Is that the cottage we wanted to buy in the 1960s, I wonder?
So cheap but we couldn't afford it!

Nightsky, Callistemon etc. These are for you from today. Sorry I didn't have time to pop into the estate agents.

Callistemon Wed 19-May-21 17:15:12

I only have £1.9 million unfortunately, just out of reach
sad
There is one near me for nearly £4 million shock

Gagajo Just the right place (not a dream place but practical) came up on RightMove although it needed updating but it was bad timing. Now SSTC.
It wasn't meant to be.

Where was it?

£2m (if you had it) could buy you anything from a small flat in London to an estate with a big house and rolling acres in somewhere more remote and beautiful.

Callistemon Wed 19-May-21 16:58:35

This wasn't a bit elegant but it was practical and could be made lovely.

Never mind - something else will come along I hope, for you too.

GagaJo Wed 19-May-21 16:56:57

Mine too. I loved it. It was so elegant and had the upstairs living room I hanker after. AND a converted soft.

While not my dream house, a very practical and lovely house came up on Right Move about six months ago. Right in the catchment for the school we want my DGS to go to. V sadly, I was in no position to sell/move. Shouldn't have looked really.

A small apartment on the Spanish island that I love. A sea view would be lovely with a balcony and a patio where I could have some plants and pots. Bliss.

SueJW2106 Wed 19-May-21 15:26:25

I saw my dream house on Rightmove a few weeks ago, only a few miles from where I live now. It's got five bedrooms, an open plan kitchen/living/dining area, a utility room, a separate living room, a study, two downstairs loos, one bathroom and two en-suites, A LIFT!, a double garage with a games room above, and a wine cellar underneath. Also a beautiful, secluded, garden. Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to win the lottery - it's £2m! [Hmmm]

Designing my dream house is something I do in my head to try to get off to sleep if I have an overactive mind at night. It does work !

Treetops - and I will be in the next door library/kitchen/bathroom combo. As you say I'd be in the seventh heaven.

Treetops05 Wed 19-May-21 13:32:13

A library with a bathroom and kitchen attached...I'd be in heaven

Ohh a Huf Haus for me too. Ultra modern mostly glass.
That’s my dream but it will have to wait till I win the lottery.
?

I was beginning to think it was only me who loves them ?

Ealdemodor Wed 19-May-21 13:27:45

A house near plenty of shops, amenities and a bus stop, and which never has plumbing problems would be good!
We have had many issues with plumbing over the years, and I am waiting for a plumber as we write.

Mamma7 Wed 19-May-21 13:22:26

Love our cottage but if it was next to a beach or lake it would be even better ?

A smallish 2 bedroomed bungalow with plenty of storage easy to get to if its in the loft. A bathroom with a bath tub and a shower cubicle. A nice driveway with room for at least four cars to get in and out. A small back garden just big enough to feed the birds and hang my washing. Not much to ask. Except I would like it to be in the town I live now and it doesn't exist at my budget.

Similar to Urmstingran, my dream home is a cottage right by the sea, so I can walk to the end of my garden and onto the beach.
The front would face into a pretty street, with lovely little arty shops and cafes.
The cottage itself would have a largish kitchen/diner/ living space and would look out to the sea. It would have a small laundry, cloakroom. Facing the front would be the cosy sitting room with log burner ( even though I know they’re bad for the environment) and would be furnished in chintzy cottage style with lots of pictures on the walls, some done by me.
Upstairs, I’d have three bedrooms, one used as a sewing/painting room. One family bathroom and one en suite shower room. My bedroom would be the one with the sea view of course.
The garden would have a small lawn, and lots of flowers, shrubs and two or three trees, one with a swing. Also a pergola with highly scented climbers and lovely rattan sofas. It would have a winding path down to the gate leading to the beach, and more seats down there. At the front, there would be a small garden with a small table and chairs where I could have a cuppa and chat to passers by.
To complete this idyl I would have a little well behaved jack russell who had a basket in every room.
I’d have frequent visits from my lovely children, so might have to increase the number of bedrooms.
I often go through this dream house in my head as I’m drifting off to sleep.
If only I could win the lottery ☺️

My bungalow, but on a secluded beach with a lovely view up in N.Ireland's North Coast, like the one in the pic I took last time I was up there. I live in a town with a promenade, a marina and a castle, great places to walk, but a beach would be fantastic.

Hellogirl1 Wed 19-May-21 12:29:25

An old, single storey cottage overlooking the sea, with very thick walls, beams and a large ingle nook fireplace, the IOW would be a nice place to find it.

b1zzle Wed 19-May-21 12:11:07

A little cottage beside the estuary in Kingsbridge, South Devon.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 19-May-21 11:59:21

To buck the trend I must admit I love traditional cottages, especially those with a porch covered with climbing roses. It doesn't have to be thatched. A picket fence with hollyhocks and delphiniums is a must. All out of my price range but I can dream.

leeds22 Wed 19-May-21 11:53:28

I live in a 300 year old cottage, complete with huge inglenook and stone mullions. My dream home is now something ultra modern with huge triple glazed windows and wide views of sea or countryside. Just a dream.
