Chester area - a good place for retirees?

I grew up near Chester and agree it is beautiful. If you follow the advice of AGAA4, nearby villages include Mickle Trafford, Frodsham (market town), Kingsley (very quiet and has wonderful views over the Cheshire Plain), Alvanley and Manley. Sadly the smell of the oil refinery now reaches Helsby. Further afield is Daresbury, its church windows depicting the works of Lewis Carroll. Runcorn and Warrington, massively extended as new towns, have excellent road links.

I moved from Delamere Forest (very attractive but not where my future lay) many moons ago so can’t comment on golf courses.

As your daughter lives in Cheadle have you considered Lymm? It’s in Cheshire, (further from Chester), has a village feel, might satisfy some of your criteria and is 15.8 miles from her. There’s Lymm Golf Club too for your DH. Pretty canal, barges, some niche shops, a mix of houses.

Chester is a lovely city, cathedral, history and their new Storyhouse theatre/library/restaurant. The golf course is Vicars Cross I think just outside. I had a caravan near Chester and Delamere Forest and loved it. North Wales is very near too and the Cheshire countryside is lovely. Liverpool about half an hour away. Chester, although named a city, is not very big.
I live about an hour and a half away and visit whenever I can, it’s a jewel.

I was born in Chester - so at least it's good for that!! It is a beautiful and historical city, have been back many times. I started life in Newry Park, then we moved to Hoole where I started school. We moved to Prestwick just before my 6th birthday - can't be much help about living there now.

Sorry, should also have said about the same distance from Cheadle.

We are in a Cheshire village about 15 miles from Chester.Moved from the Glasgow area over forty years ago. I still consider myself Scottish through and through but we have been very happy here and I think of it as my home. My children and grandchildren are local. Very friendly with lovely people. PM me if you want to know location.

The outlying areas of Chester may be better if you want a sense of community rather than the city itself.
It is an historic city. I enjoy walking on the walls when I go into town. Shopping is good there too.

We are thinking of relocating to England from Scotland. Our daughter lives in Cheadle near Manchester and we would prefer to be within an hours car journey away. Chester is looking very attractive. A small city with nearby golf courses for my other half! Any pointers to help us please. It is important to find an area with a sense of community.
