Alegrias1 Thu 20-May-21 12:29:18

Do you have a verified link to this actually happening and where?

2016, right after the Brexit referendum. Verified. Hackney, Bracknell, Evesham.

Sometimes I think there are a group of people who are assigned by “Gransnet” to throw out posts, just to either start a conversation ? OR ? stirring.

Are we talking about the UK?

If they don’t have their own passports they’ll be on their parents, won’t they? If they’ve travelled in.

If they were born here a birth certificate will establish that.

To your answer, children have not been allowed on parents passports in the UK for many many years now.

And my GS has his own passport as he has travelled abroad

The rules for EU nationals living in the UK have sadly changed since 1/01/2021 and all EU residents still living in the UK had to apply for settled status via the home office. Failure to do this by the deadline can result in withdrawal of public services incl education

Dunno what the robovacs got to do with the original thread though..? & does that mean robovacs dont actually clean, they just scatter dust & dirt from place to place instead of actually SUCKING it up???

I think they suck up bits and dirt but it sounds as if they are very effective muck-spreaders - every gardener should have one
???

My 10 year old GD doesn't have one and has never been asked for one however she was born in the uk and has a full birth certificate.

Witzend Thu 20-May-21 11:49:47

Hardly my word of the day, Nannan2. As Far As I Know, it’s merely down to my being too lazy to type out the whole thing, even though I’ve just done precisely that.

Just as an aside from the point of this thread - when we do our Carer's courses, we suggest that everyone keeps their passport up to date (or acquires one) as it is the best way of proving who you are as most Bill's etc come on line now.

Er, what is the point of this thread? Or is it just another thread to prove Britain is crap?

for many years i had no passport and all my bills are online. If I needed to show a bill to prove my address (which btw a passport does not have in it) I used to print a bill off.

nipsmum Thu 20-May-21 11:47:08

That's their parent problem ,not mine.

I've no idea of the background to this, but its certainly not made up from someone's imagination on Twitter. Dates from 2016 though.

Schools were asking for children's passports, and they were treating non-white British children differently.

mokryna Thu 20-May-21 11:41:31

A collègue I worked with, booked a holiday and arriving at the airport looked at one of her children’s passports. To her horror found it was nearly out of date, family had to return home no refund. Check passport, that it is valid for the time require.

Theoddbird Thu 20-May-21 11:40:55

What a strange question. Why do you want to know?

I just took a screenshot of the relevant Twitter account and that was the pinned tweet!

Not heard of a Gp surgery asking for one to register folk before- is that a new thing? Been with current surgery almost 9yrs...wouldn't parents use a birth certificate to register child at surgery/schools etc anyway?

Witzend Thu 20-May-21 11:13:34

An ex colleague of mine had neither passport nor driving licence when she was executor for an old uncle and needed to deal with various banks and building societies. Most of whom insisted on one or the other for photo ID purposes.

However she was a quietly determined person and held her ground in maintaining that since neither was a legal requirement in the U.K., they were not entitled to insist.

Eventually they gave in, though I forget what they accepted instead. A few years later her bus pass would probably have done, but she had yet to reach that stage then.

ID cards for everybody would solve a lot of these problems, though I do realise that criminals cloning them would be an issue now. And I certainly wouldn’t like to be required to carry one at all times, which AFAIK does happen elsewhere in Europe.

Nannan2 Thu 20-May-21 11:12:37

Yeh, still no idea why anyone (except maybe childs parent) would care.I took one of my GC to italy with us on holiday late 2019- but i knew he had passport as they'd been away to spain as a family year before- aside from that i didn't need to know. Not our business if parents get one or not, if theyre going nowhere, won't need one. ?

Yearoff Thu 20-May-21 11:00:32

Except for the youngest, born during COVID, all of my grandchildren have passports and have been abroad. The baby is in the application process now.

Janetashbolt Thu 20-May-21 10:57:28

we lived abroad in the days when children were just added to parents passports, caused a lot of hassle if dad wanted to fly with one of them, once they started to issue passports to children they got their own immedicately. Just had to remember they needed renewing every 5 years instead of 10, also several people have a neightmare getting photos endorsed as most GPs don't do it anymore

ReadyMeals Thu 20-May-21 10:52:35

I don't have a passport or driving licence and I was several years without a GP when we moved here as they were insisting on seeing a passport or driving licence in order to register you. In the end they let me in when my husband (who does have a passport) had been with them a long time and they trusted him to vouch for me.

Juicylucy Thu 20-May-21 10:50:35

Yes

jenpax Thu 20-May-21 10:45:59

I have 3 daughters and 6 grandchildren all have passports except the baby and he will soon, as we are hoping to go to Holland in the summer.

Tish Thu 20-May-21 10:42:48

Yes, they all do. My youngest got 1 before he was 6 weeks old in order to go to a wedding in Eire....

MerylStreep I Googled it (I don't have a clue about Twitter) and the whole post came up top of the page. The comments are interesting and it looks like this issue may have been raised in the House of Lords.

TG - the thread is getting interesting at last!
