I have the decoraters in at the moment and yesterday was all about prep and they managed to get the undercoat onto woodwork. The smell from the paint was overpowering, but this morning is not so noticable and in fact i am quite liking it, it reminds me of the days as a child when dad decorated and the gloss paint gave off the same smell. When DH was alive and painted anything he always used water based whiich is virtually odour free. Which do you prefer???

Definitely odour free, paint smell makes me feel sick and my eyes itch.

I used to like the smell of fresh paint although I'm not sure it was good health wise as they were lead based. We used to make sure windows were open for ventilation.
Nowadays I don't think it's such a big issue as most modern paints are water based.

I paint around the house regularly but don't think I've ever used water based. Must investigate. Thank you. Actually don't mind the smell of white gloss. Smells of progress whilst I'm on the case! Currently doing the lounge. Knees are relieved that I've finished the skirting. Doors almost done and then I'll move into the vast bay window area. Don't I lead an exciting life?!! Strangely enough it does excite me as I get such pleasure from the final result.

Your not alone. I love painting, inside and out.
It’s a standing joke with friends, family, neighbours.
I always use oil based paints. I prefer a real deep gloss so for me water based doesn’t give that.
Happy painting ?

Lots of onions sliced up on plates around the house/room really does absorb the smell of gloss paint.

Ive never tried the onion thing bikergran, but does it leave the smell of onions instead?!!

Well it does a bit but you sort of get used to it. It does fade away as the day goes on, but if you hate the smell of onions then ....hmm not sure.
