I thought it may be interesting and informative if members told us about hotels or B&B’s in the UK that they have stayed at, or want to stay ( maybe a friend has recommended).Either good for a week or a short break.Such a big membership on GN must give us a lot of ideas.Maybe mention a few nearby things to do/visit as well.smile

Hi Lemon!
I have been saving your thread under 'Watching'.
I am going nowhere soon, but want to keep it as future reference- you never know!

Would it be possible/reasonable, do you think, to place it under the 'Travel' section so that it would easy to find in the future?
(I find locating stuff in the 'Chat' section quite daunting as there is so much of it?).

Sincerely hope you don't mind this suggestion!
Thank you.

Still in Dumfries and Galloway Trigony House at Closeburn is a beautiful old building whose comfy roomshave lovely toiletries and yummy homemade biscuits It’s very dog friendly and the food is delicious.

I apologise to Cavens, it’s classed as a boutique hotel. The food is delicious!

Update- just read the latest reviews of Balcary Bay hotel. Apparently it's changed hands and sounds like things are pretty awful there at present. So disappointing. Don't know if we'll risk a return. Going to Knockinaam instead. That place doesn't disappoint.

Oh what a disappointment! We’ve just managed to get up to our place, so will probably miss the opportunity for dinner there!
Cavens in nearby Kirkbean is a country house B&B, with the feeling of it being your own! Very luxurious, you might like it.

The White Horse at Brancaster Norfolk.
Pub with very comfortable rooms, wonderful food and views over salt marsh. Good for birding at Cley and Titchwell plus Sandringham.

Agree, love that one too. And for the seal trips too. Very cosy.

What a useful thread this is! We have been toying with treating ourselves to a few days away. I like to stay somewhere with either a restaurant on site or within walking distance, saves the arm wrestling competition about who is driving and who is having the wine!

Knockinaam so hidden and unknown, been for dinner many times never stayed there but the approach itself makes it special. Many beaches for walks nearby.
Hull!!!!!! is all I can say, the Premier Inn is probably up to their usual standard but is right on the very busy dual carriageway to the docks. Nearby Beverly would be my choice.

Another vote for Premier Inns but if you fancy treating yourselves the Pentillie Castle in Cornwall is wonderful.

I have stayed a few times at Saxon Villa in a little village called Robin Hoods bay which is just outside of Whitby N Yorkshire , they do a great choice of breakfast and the rooms are lovely . The village is gorgeous and Whitby is in walking distance if your feeling energetic lol , if not it’s a very short bus ride

The Slieve Donard in Newcastle Northern Ireland is my favourite hotel ever and I've stayed in quite a few. In the swimming pool there is a massive spa pool looking down the sweeping lawns to the bay and Mourne Mountains. Will be very happy when we can travel there again from England. It is a special place and so not cheap. You can book a lovely afternoon tea there too.

Been pleasantly surprised at some Travelodge locations. Basic no frills for those who can't afford flashy hotels and boutique B&B's.

One in Bath (overlooking a lake) a short walk from the town centre via a canal walk. Walthamstow, next to the station for easy in and out of town trips. The Kings Cross ones are excellent for being near to the stations, in the centre of the city, with fantastic local cafes nearby. Edinburgh has a few in and very close to the city centre too. Seem to remember staying in a very pleasant one in Walsall, near to The Leather Museum!

Don't forget Youth Hostels too. We had some great nights all around Devon and Cornwall, fascinating buildings, lovely staff and met a lot of over-60's overseas travellers too. They don't seem to have the snob value that the English do about hostels! They are ideal for lone travellers too, you never sit alone for breakfast in a hostel and everyone is happy to share what they have if you haven't come equipped

Be brave and try something different. Lots of ideas on this thread, I am making notes!

Hellogirl1 as far as I remember the pub was a few minutes walk away in the village.

I have enjoyed staying at some of Warners Hotels , there Nidd Hall near Harrogate is ace.
Also Harrogate wise have stayed in Cairn Hotel in Covid format , but may years ago it was then a THF Hotel the Crown in Harrogate .
Have had short stays in Leuisureplex hotels in different parts of England, plus a few years back a stay on a holiday Inn near High Wycombe .

That's for 2 and includes a fabulous dinner and breakfast. They have cheaper rooms and also various deals throughout the year. As everywhere, you get what you pay for.

Balcary bay hotel should be good at £300 a night.

The two best UK hotels I’ve stayed are:

Overwater Hall in the Lake District (won as a prize in an early GN competition) where we were treated like favoured guests. The ambience, food and setting couldn’t be faulted and we promised ourselves that we will return.

Northcote Manor in North Devon. We stayed in their best and biggest suite (a gift from our daughter), which was sumptuous - and the meals we had there were just delicious. It’s really tucked away in the country and perfect for a weekend getaway.

Tregenna Castle, St Ives, Cornwall (not a real castle). Stunning views, A1 service, tree houses, excellent food, attentive staff.

Just looked it up, it’s called The Close ( Tetbury.)

That’s right susieq and a lovely hotel it still is, must go back there sometime this year.smile

Hull City Centre, Premier Inn, very clean, friendly, good breakfast. Restaurant on site. Few minutes from the town centre, very close to The Deep Aquarium. Not far from the coast for a day, Hornsea, Bridlington, Scarborough. Also not far from York where you can visit the Chocolate Factory, Street entertainers and of course The famous cobbled Streets.

Does anyone have a recommendation for Whitley Bay?

Urmstongran Sat 22-May-21 20:06:10

We return once (or twice) every year to The Plockton Hotel on Harbour Street. Meg & her husband run it beautifully. Years ago it was owned but Ken Bruce’s (radio 2) brother Alisdair and his wife.

It’s the most perfect location by the edge of Loch Carron. We are booked in - 4 week’s tonight I shall be sitting down to dinner there. I can’t wait. The menu is amazing. Freshly caught fish, smokies, steaks. Breakfasts of kippers or full English.

A tartan carpet in reception, a log fire in winter, a lively bar with locals and visitors. Not stuffy, friendly, buzzy and welcoming. Highly recommended.

It’s a 12 bedroom 2 star family owned hotel. A twenty minute drive from the Isle of Skye, and close to Eilean Donan Castle, Glenelg and the Brochs, and the Inverness to Kyle Railway.

Lemon grove.
I suspect it was the “ Close Hotel “ in the high street.
Many well known people stayed here when Princess Diana was at Highgrove.
I lived there in the eighties and was a part time receptionist.
Small world.

Hellogirl1 Sat 22-May-21 19:50:20

Albangirl, is that the one immediately next door to the pub? If so, we stayed there many years ago, and loved it, and the area.
