Can anyone tell me the name of the heroine in Rebecca?

I subscribe to Cinema Paradiso. They have tens of thousands of DVDs films of all nations, TV series, old and newly released films. Two DVDs at a time. As soon as I send them back get another two by return of post.

Based on actual events. Fisherman's Friend is a pleasant escape to the Cornish fishing village of Port Isaac. A fairly predictable story but character driven and it passes the time pleasantly, not to mention tunefully.

A few I've watched recently;
Joy.
A star is born.
Best of enemies.
Mary, Queen of Scots.
All very good and entertaining.

Somehow because of reading and believing media blurb we missed Manchester by The Sea. Wonderful, if tragic, film. Slow start but stick with it..... Hankies at the ready. Highly recommend.

The Dig is brilliant, Bill Nighy films are always a good watch. I tend to look for the actors i.e. Maggie Smith;Judy Dench, and the late Robin Williams such a sad loss.

We watched Get Hard on the weekend and it's hilarious but I really like Wil Ferrell and will admit it's not for everyone

For unadulterated feel good pleasure I recommend Leap Year, set in Ireland and starring Matthew Goode and Amy Adams.

Miracle in Cell 7, a Turkish film with good subtitles.

I agree with an article in yesterday's Sunday Times Culture , the old classic's appear to be lost. They selected a comprehensive list. I would love to see... A Space Odyssey, Duck soup, West Side story, All about Eve, Marty, North by Northwest ect
Not available on Netflix or any streaming service.
It's a shame, that these are not seen easily.

I loved Lion, too.

A serious, but non violent one I recently watched again was Spotlight - the fact-based story of the Boston journalist who first began to uncover child abuse within the Catholic Church.

Forget whether anyone’s mentioned Parasite, the Oscar winning Korean one - we thoroughly enjoyed that - very clever.,

My list of films to enjoy is now much longer! Thank you all for your suggestions. I want to recommend "Lion" all over again! Glad to see I am not alone in thinking it a great film.

I watched ‘Sylvia’ the other day about Sylvia Plath. I found it quite moving . One of those you can ‘t forget about

I love Tie me Up, Tie me Down and All about my Mother by Pedro Almodovar anongst several others - one of my favourite directors (must stop or will go on ad nauseam!)

Witzend the modern horror films don’t even compare with “Rebecca the first wife”. I was a girl when I first watched it and I can still remember the subtle creepiness and unease!

Hidden Figures does it for me. The true story of the space race between the US and Russia. The Americans want to send John Glenn into space but they have some major issues to overcome before that can happen. Along comes Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, all with amazing mathematical brains to solve the problems. They suffer hostility in what was, in the 1960's, a man's world. Not only are they women but they are black. Their dignity shines through with some brilliant one-liners. Amazing women. Amazing film.

Another vote for Goodbye Christopher Robin. Very moving and beautifully filmed.
Another vote for Whistle Down the Wind. The children were local children and just amazing. Hayley at her best.

I’ve just been reminded by another thread, of Tea With Mussolini. Highly recommended! Semi autobiographical film by Franco Zeffirelli, with a brilliant cast.

I adored Lion, wonderful film, I think it came out the same time as the greatly overrated La La Land, I know which one I thought was the best!

The Dig is very good on Neflix. I've still to watch Parasite, must do that because I really wanted to see it at the cinema when it first came out and then lock down happened, we did catch 1917 at the cinema, now on Prime, I thought it was very good but I think it's a film that justifies the wide screen of a cinema.

Never discount foreign language films, a wonderful one I saw on Prime recently, Capernaum, the story of a young boy who ends up, for various reasons living on the streets of Beirut. That has now shifted from Prime but can be viewed on Film 4. Film 4 also has the American Woman which I posted about on another thread, gritty, heart breaking, but very good.

Philomena, which I saw several years ago now, also very good.
