Royal Oak Day.

Happy Oak Apple Day to you all. Today 29th May in 1660 King Charles II returned to London from exile in France.

Parliament had ordered the 29th of May, the King’s birthday, to be forever kept as a day of thanksgiving for our redemption from tyranny and the King’s return to his Government, he returning to London that day."

My mother's class at school used to chant the following to the teacher at morning registration, and if everyone remembered, they were given a half day holiday.

"The 29th May is Royal Oak Day if you don't give us holiday we'll all run away.

I remember this every year.

When I was at primary school, Mum sent us with an oak leaf on our coat. If you didn’t wear one, you ran the risk of being ‘nettled’ by an older child!

Don’t know what would be made of that country custom nowadays!

Thank you for that MiniMoon. I had no idea. I shall wear an oak leaf on my coat just because I love old customs! I'm not sure what today's republicans would make of that.
Oak trees are my favourites anyway.

There is a wonderful oak tree planted in Library Gardens ( Leigh on sea) that was planted on the day King Charles 11 sailed up the Thames to take the throne.
