I really don’t understand why some want an updated royal family, it works fine as it is, is it a need for celebrities?

Its not a need for celebrities, its a need for reality.

Charles was always shy, i know people who were at Aberystwyth university when he did a term there, they said how shy he was. I have met him several times, he is so gentle and polite and was never a case of ‘ I am important’ .

The Queen Mother couldn’t come to terms with her own daughter being of more importance than her.

Margaret loved the world of celebrity.

Yes, Margaret definitely did ... also I think the Queen Mother judging by recent documentaries about her.

I find it hard to believe too.
It's not as if Charles sought fame.
To my recollection, the only one other than Diana who loved the limelight was Margaret.

Another question, it is claimed often that Charles was jealous of
Diana, I don’t believe this.

He made a joke about having two wives to walk down both sides of the road, this has always been taken as jealousy .

Who remembers JFK making a joke about his wife ? They were
visiting a country, the crowds were out , the papers crammed with photographs of Jackie, they were in Paris, he made a speech introducing himself as ‘ I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris ‘

I'm not sure if W & C would be jealous.
Surely they get far more attention than anyone can handle.
They may have welcomed the distraction that Meghan provided.
Especially at a time when rumours were circulating about W having an affair.
(Please, please don't anyone report me! For heaven's sake! I've been there before )

I agree with your Posts Anniebach and Maddyone.

I am not sure it was the Cambridges who were jealous... I would have said it was the Sussexes jealous of the status of the Cambridges as it was mentioned several times last night that the Sussexes complained. As Annie has said in previous posts, Meghan thought she was going to be Queen Bee ..... and then found she wasn't. She had plenty of adoration from the crowds but seemingly this wasn't enough as she did not have the rank.

I agree with your post Annie. It seems to me that William and Catherine understand royalty and how it works and what is expected of it. Meghan did not understand royalty or the expectations, of that I feel sure. I suspect she thought she was going to be a superstar, and then found there was a pecking order, which I think she didn’t like. As I said., these are my opinions.

Meghan wanted a voice. Omid Scobie is now her voice so I'm pleased that his comments about William's staff allegedly planting stories about Harry's mental health were removed from the documentary as they could be defamatory.

The RF are at last abandoning their, 'Never complain, never explain' ethos which will hopefully quash any damaging lies from across the pond.

If the sh*t were to hit the fan it would be Scobie's head on the block and not Meghan's so he needs to watch his back.

Interesting programme, yes Penny Junor had it right, in my opinion. I don’t think William and Kate were jealous, concerned yes, did they see Harry as being used ?

Meg wanted to continue being ‘a star’, the royals don’t do celebrity, there is an order of rank but Meg didn’t like where she came in that order.

When Harry now makes speeches they do not seem Harry’s words. I don’t see what new opportunities he has found.

It was also pointed out, probably correctly, that the Cambridges were rather jealous of the attention and popularity that the Sussexes generated originally. We’re all human!
This is just one aspect that we have seen before. Charles seemed quite jealous of Diana.
Another aspect being that Diana was seen as a conduit to updating the Royal Family. Ditto Meghan. Sadly both failed. Charles and William seem to want it to stay entrenched in a bygone era

Watched the ITV programme about William and Harry last night. Thought it would be variations on the same theme, but there were quite a few new insights.

I found the contributors fairly even handed in their comments, often trying to see things from both sides.

I agree up to a point. I thought it wasn't as negative about H&M as most of the other MSM pieces I watch or read!

Royalty and celebrity certainly do not go well together. It appears that Meghan wanted to be a celebrity rather than royal, perhaps having totally misunderstood what royalty is about. It seems to me that the ‘service’ that Meghan understands is not opening a new ward in an NHS hospital in a place she’s never heard of. Using Netflix as a way to ‘serve’ the people seems to me to more about serving the interest of her bank account rather than doing anything to actually serve ordinary people. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s my opinion anyway, and events seem to have shown that to be the case.

What was your opinion Calendargirl after watching?

I thought Penny Junor, I think it was, had it about right. She said Meghan was already an acclaimed public speaker on issues that were important to her, before she met Harry, and she (Meghan) thought that becoming a Princess/Duchess would give her a greater platform to expand her views and ‘change the world’. Hopefully she truly loves Harry and this was not her sole aim.

It was also said that Charles was very taken with her, liked her very much, whereas William was a lot more cautious, and felt she had an ‘agenda’. He wanted Harry to take it much more slowly and not rush into things before he really got to know her, which didn’t go down well with Harry.

It was also pointed out, probably correctly, that the Cambridges were rather jealous of the attention and popularity that the Sussexes generated originally. We’re all human!

Harry obviously was not comfortable with his old role, and marrying Meghan opened new doors and opportunities to him. It doesn’t seem that relationships between the brothers will ever go back to how they were.

At the end of it all, it seems that Royalty and Celebrity do not blend well together.

White dresses with a tartan sash, lemongrove? How elegant. We galumphed around in aertex polo shirts, plimsolls and knee-length divided skirts. Well, they were knee length when we started at the school, barely decent by the time we left.

Scottish dancing was taught at our school too and other dances like those mentioned by Callistemon.
Much more fun than cross country running in the rain!

Scottish Country dancing was once a fortnight at my primary school ( Miss Robertson, a Scot was very keen on us learning)
We all loved it, and put on performances for any visitors, girls in white dresses with a tartan sash. Music, dance and dressing up, what more could a girl ask??

We did learn country dancing at school which stood me in good stead when I went to barn dances in the village hall or in barns - what a decadent life I led!!
