Unusual or Interesting Names in your Family ?

My mum's name was Oriel. I love it but she hated it as she was called 'Ear'ole' at school!
She did give me a lovely name though.

My mother’s name was Betty Tryphena!!! She was very proud of the name Tryphena and never let us forget it! Apparently it’s of Greek origin meaning delicacy.

That’ll teach me not to read through first. Bucket family already mentioned twice.
On the male side we have Jack, George, Thomas, Henry and William repeated through at least five generations.
Female side we have Alice, Sarah and Lily over and over again.
Nothing fancy or remotely intriguing.

Apparently my Dad wanted to call me Sophonisba! Luckily my Mum vetoed that

Not much imagination went into naming my family members back in the day. The men were either William, James or John and the women were either Margaret or Jane. It is a nightmare to keep track of who is who on the family tree.

I meant to say - just as well as Primrose would not have suited her at all.

My MIL was nearly named Primrose as she was born on Primrose day.
Her parents chose something else, as Primrose would not have suited her at all.

One GM was Catherine Elizabeth, her mother was Hannah.GGM to me.
Other GM was Sarah Ellen.

All my mum's sisters were named after flowers Rose Pansy, Violet and Daisy.

My G G Aunts on mums side, Thirza, Clarice, Olga, Una Tessibell, Zetha and Aurelia. Twelve children in total.

I think many people had a grandfather called Frederick, as German names were popular throughout Victorian Britain (until the war of course.)
Names in our family were ordinary ones, but I do have a great grandfather who was called Rufus, and a great uncle called Sylvester ( although both names were ordinary at the time.)

My grandparents were Ella Isabella, which I personally have always found an odd combination and David on one side of the family, and Elisabeth and James Henry on the other.

James Henry was 20 years older than his wife, which has some bearing on the matter.

My father born in 1920 was named for both his grandfathers as he was his parents eldest son. My mother was named after her own mother and an aunt, plus given a third name that I have not been able to trace in the family. Her elder sister had been named after both their grandmothers.

When my turn came I was named for a friend of my mother and for my maternal grandmother. My paternal grandmother didn't seem to mind, so I may not be the only one who found Ella Isabella an unfortunate combination..

My grandparents were Florence and Walter and Ada and Edward.
My mum loathed her name, Gladys Hilda.

We have Alices coming out of our ears - on both sides - to such an extent that we have big Alice, Little Alice and baby Alice. Our own daughter, also Alice is known as Al!

An unlucky few have DeLap as a middle name. Luckily my middle name is Jane after my granny although she was always called Jenny!

My father's middle name was Charteris. No one else has bothered using that.

Grandmother was Ethel. Granddaughter called Ethelann. Grandfather (who also had a sister named Ethel) was Herbert, unlucky son called after him - Herbie.
Recent children called Zenneth, Malmo (guess why), and Jaxx.

My grandparents were Jack (John) and Martha and George Armstrong and Sarah Jane (known to all as Jeannie). Armstrong as a middle name came from I don't know where, but Jeannie's maiden name was Armstrong.
Going further back, there are a lot of Thomases Henrys, Williams and Johns.
There was a great aunt Etty, which must have been short for Henrietta, but I've never been sure.

I started work on my family tree at the end of last year and was delighted to find I had a great granny Fanny.
[Please don't bother trying to inform me it was Frances as some gransnetters did. It wasn't. I have her birth certificate.]
Somehow I can't see her name coming back into fashion.?

My grandmothers were Elsie and Lillian.
Grandfathers were Joseph and Clarence.
My dad was Arthur Ernest and his brother was Clarence Hodget. Doubt that will will come back.

My DH and one relative have very unusual names. Don’t want to post though. Possible instant recognition- sorry

My maternal grandparents were James David and Jessie Jane, paternal ones were William and Anne-not sure if they had middle names. Paternal grandfather William was born in 1894 and we have had a William in every generation since, usually as a second name. Current holders are my son and grandson who both have it as a middle name.

Tom Edgar and Edith Mary on father’s side, and Thomas James and Dorothy Gladys Gertrude on my mother’s. Run of the mill, really.

My grandfather had the resplendent name of Methuselah! Funnily enough, no one in the generations since has chosen it for their son.

He was known as Meth to his friends and as a child I thought that was short for Methylated as in spirit.

I have an Edwardian ancestor called Harry Fido. He’s quite a round man with a huge handlebar moustache and looks as if he’s stepped right out of the pages of Three Men and. Dog. And my daughter just sent me a photo of the grave of an ancestor she’s just visited (she’s traced her fathers family tree back hundreds of years ) called Thomasin which is so Thomas Hardy’ish.
