Why is drinking alcohol so popular?

I am male. When I was younger, in my 20s, there was often social pressure to drink alcohol.

I have never smoked, always avoided it, but I have tried beer, uh, I thought it tasted horrible, so no. I have tried sherry, why the fuss about it? I had some wine once, well, didn't seem anything worth drinking to me. I know, out of step with most people, I am wondering what they all see in it. I get offers from a well-known supermarket for bottles of wine for ONLY £4.99, which seems a lot of money to me. I think that it is a good job that I don't drink alcohol, I don't think I could afford to!

I think that the most recent time I drank alcohol was over forty years ago at a cousin's wedding, and then only a sip from a glass of champagne so as not to appear rude.

I always had a soft drink at events in a pub or staff parties and the like. Certainly I would not drink and drive anyway, but saying 'no thank you, I'm driving' when offered alcohol was a convenient get out.

Yet drinking alcohol seems very popular. I think I saw somewhere that a lot of young adults these days do not drink alcohol and that is now mainstream culturally widely accepted, whereas years ago, the bemused attitude to someone male who did not have a 'proper' drink was widespread.

I think that some people reading this who like an alcoholic drink may wonder in amazement at why I just don't understand why, but I am really don't understand why drinking alcohol is so popular and supplying it is such a major industry, though recognising from my limited experience of going in pubs that they always seemed to have a small selection of soft drinks available, though some seemed to be dual purpose, such as either a soft drink or as a mixer to make some sort of cocktail.

Why do some people eat meat/fish/dairy?
Why do some people wear leather shoes?

And is there honey still for tea?

did you know that honey isn't vegan? Neither are some advocado pears or other fruits/veg's where bee hives are moved around to pollinate the crop....don't you just LOVE QI?

There is nothing wrong with bees pollinating crops. The issue is of taking the honey that they have produced from them.

greenlady102 Sun 20-Jun-21 14:44:22

actually no......some crop growers rent hives which are moved from place to place through the season as needed. There is an argument that says such behaviour exploits the bees (and there are other arguments against it) and therefore crops grown in this way are not vegan. edition.cnn.com/2019/05/10/health/avocado-almond-vegan-partner/index.html

me? I am not vegan but I see merit in the argument....which is not the same as agreeing with it.

ElderlyPerson Sun 20-Jun-21 15:01:29

Thank you for the link greenlady102.

Yes, moving the hives could harm the bees.

I am thinking that having beehives in a field and not moving them and not taking the honey from them, but just have the bees pollinate the crops and letting them keep the honey for their own use is fine. Though others might think differently.

Could the hives be constructed so that a human getting the honey is impossible?

Elderlyperson, You avoided the issue and did not answer my question.

I have a friend who does not drink coffee and tea because she doesn't like them. It doesn't puzzle her that other people do drink it. She can see that it is a question of taste Coffee and tea are also often on special offer as ready meals and biscuits, which I rarely eat because I do not like them.

I answered as best I could.

It was not a matter of deliberately avoiding the issue.

I’m with elderlyperson but do not understand why rufus thinks that he is religious. Anyway, every year young people going off to freshers sees a number concerned about fellow students drinking alcohol. I’ve never understood the need for others to try and encourage others to have a glass/can/ whatever. Although vegans becoming so popular have tried to persuade me to try some tofu dish which I know I do not care for. So maybe it’s more a case of others trying to convince others they will like something. Personally I’ve thought it’s when someone doesn’t have anything else to say!

ElderlyPerson Welcome!
This thread is reminiscent of some others not long ago when another Grandad was hounded by the Grannies for holding opinions. He's left, unfortunately, but the friendly banter was equally entertaining;

What an odd post. I don’t understand football, birdwatching or heterosexuality but I still appreciate other people do.

I love a rum and coke, or a chilled glass of Chablis or even a medium Sherry with a savoury biscuit. Cheers Folks. ??

Possibly, but probably not.

We all have different tastes. My question would be 'Why do people like alcohol so much?'
Some people may like coffee or tea but would they drink it until they made themselves ill? This is where alcohol is different to other likes and dislikes.

I like to relax with a large G&T or glass wine at the end of the day as it’s sheer bliss, it melts away all the stresses and strains of the day and makes you feel so good about yourself.
I also take it in my stride as to what it costs because everything you want and need costs money , you can’t get something for nothing . And why not have everything that you enjoy in this life as long as can afford it , as we’re not on this planet for long .
You can’t put a price on what makes you happy .

wetflannel Sun 20-Jun-21 17:14:45

I'm with you Dibbydob, a relaxing gin or bacardi after a long day in the garden is a great way to unwind.

Thank you for the welcome.

Actually I am not a granddad. I have no children either. Just how it is.

The reason that I am on Gransnet is that back in April Tesco announced that it was going to stop using tray liners in the middle of the pandemic. Tesco head office seemed to want customers for online deliveries to go to the door and unload trays while the delivery driver stood two metes away. I was worried and thought it risky. I searched on the web and found a link to a Gransnet thread from when tray liners had been introduced. So I joined and asked here. There was a good discussion.

In the event Tesco deliveries have all settled down now. From what I have been told there are broadly three types of home delivery now. Some people with problems, whether elderly or not, can have grocery delivered into their home provided they have not got COVID-19, some go to the door and unpack the trays that have been placed in a stack on their doorstep with the driver stood back, apparently drivers stand back more than two metres, like half-way down the garden path, and what might be called a people's solution of the customer not opening the door but putting a tray, a box, or a tea trolley or whatever on the doorstep before the driver arrives and the driver puts the grocery on the tray or trolley or in the box, then goes, knocking on the door before going. Apparently that practice is quite widespread. It seems that the drivers are happy to do that as, in practice, it is quicker than waiting while the customer unloads trays.

Why?

rosie1959 Sun 20-Jun-21 17:31:11

Elderlyperson have been using Tesco delivery for over a year now they are very efficient I find Driver puts loaded trays just inside our hall we pick up trays take to kitchen unload and return. Very quick

ElderlyPerson Sun 20-Jun-21 17:35:00

So that is a fourth method then.

Judy54 Sun 20-Jun-21 17:37:25

Eat, drink and be merry. Each to their own do what ever makes you happy. Enjoy a drink if you want, eat what you enjoy meat or vegetarian. Live and let live!

vegansrock Sun 20-Jun-21 17:46:39

I am vegan as I hate animal cruelty if it can be avoided but I get why people eat meat- it’s what they are used to, they like it and they don’t really worry about the animals. I like a glass or two of white wine in the evening and understand that some people don’t like it and would prefer a cup of herbal tea, which I occasionally do. I don’t get what this thread is about though.

kjmpde Sun 20-Jun-21 17:57:33

When I was a child (now 63) children were not allowed in pubs, alcohol was rarely seen in the home - apart from Xmas. Now kids are taken into pubs and see most others drinking beer or spirits or win, alcohol takes up 2 or 3 aisles and therefore drunk at home. It is bizarre that some soft drinks are more expensive than alcohol. Stick with what you are happy with and have a nice soft drink

NotSpaghetti Sun 20-Jun-21 18:06:56

I think there is a need here to go back to the original question.

ElderlyPerson said this:
I really don't understand why drinking alcohol is so popular and supplying it is such a major industry

So, the first question has been covered. Some of us like it. The use of mind-altering drugs is as old as the hills. Alcohol is in this country a legal one. So, if you want to, you can enjoy an alcoholic drink occasionally without risk of arrest.

The second question is equally simple - if people want something and will pay for it, someone will supply it. This is true whether it's a phone or a pineapple. If you market your product enough you make it appear more desirable and likely people will pay more.

That's it really I feel. I don't understand why you find this complex.

All of us make choices about what we eat and drink. We are fortunate in this country that we are able to make choices so we can decide according to what we like the taste/texture of and what we feel comfortable eating/drinking according to our religious and philosophical convictions.

I still feel the vegan thing was a red herring. I was only illustrating our right to choose our own diet, not throwing open the door to a new debate
