Tinned food

Following on from the stored foods thread, I wonder how much and what tinned food you use.

I have baked beans, sweetcorn, tinned tomatoes, anchovies and tuna. We also have tinned tomato soup and corned beef but they are DH's!!

My store cupboard is mostly oils, vinegars, salad dressings and pickle type stuff with the occasional jam, marmalade etc.

I have a different baking drawer, a pasta and rice drawer, a tea, sugar and coffee shell and a seasonings drawer.

My Mum's store cupboard was packed with various tins.

What about yours?

Just tinned tomatoes and baked beans mainly. I do have a couple of tins of green lentals....must use them. I used to have sweetcorn but find frozen just as good and much cheaper. I am always telling people about drawers for storage. Much better than cupboards. I even had bottom of one taken out and mesh put in to store veg.

A well stocked baking shelf with various flours, sugars, dried fruit etc.

A larder shelf with tinned tomatoes, baked beans, kidney beans, green lentils, sweetcorn, tinned fruit salad to use as basis for fresh fruit salad, pineapple

Dry shelf with lentils, various rice, cous cous, muesli, pasta

We don't use a great deal of stuff in tins, other than tomatoes and beans in the colder months when I make a veg chilli.

As "stock', I always have tinned tomatoes, baked beans, sweetcorn, tuna and coconut milk

I buy other tinned goods if they're needed for a particular recipe.

In pre freezer days mother prepared lots of bottled fruit and vegetables from the garden.

Various beans, tomatoes, baby carrots, anchovies, pilchards, sardines, tuna, salmon: all fish under oil, hate brine. Peaches and cherry's. Great standbys.

Dont keep a lot of tins, just a few fall back items. Always like to have a tin of red salmon, a tin of ham, couple of tins of soup, tin of beans and a tin of custard.

We have a very useful shelf rack in the garage which was very useful during lockdown. He have most of the things mentioned in previous responses especially tinned fruit in fruit juice and have most of the things mentioned above. I remember my Mum’s pantry and she used to have dried fruit such as prunes and fruit salad which she used to soak overnight and we would have it for dessert with custard. She also used to have a big jar of eggs stored in Isinglass, for some reason eggs used to be cheaper at one time of the year.

I use tinned foods quite a lot. I'm particularly keen on tinned fruit.

I have a few tins but have had to throw some out as they were well past their use-by date (like 5 yrs and up) . If I have anything conserved it is just as likely to be in a jar.

DH is allergic to tomatoes, and can only eat them if sieved and cooked. I use cartons of strained tomatoes, the smallest possible, and freeze leftovers for sauces, stews and gravies.

So apart from tuna, I have more jars, cartons and frozen food in the store cupboard/freezer.

Tinned fish, tomatoes, coconut cream, corned beef (no added sugar). That’s about it for me.

Greyduster Fri 02-Jul-21 08:24:33

All the usual staples -
Baked beans
Very small tins of chick peas;
Tomatoes
Condensed soups that I use in cooking;
Corned beef (like Kitty said - the husband’s!);
Red kidney beans;
D’aucy mixed vegetables which I add to cheese and potato pie;
Tuna;
Tinned red salmon;
John West Sild in tomato sauce (mine);
Tinned pineapple rings, and mandarin oranges;
Processed peas (don’t ask!).

I rarely open a ton. Occasional beans on toast in the colder months and kidney beans Fairchild. That's it. Tuna comes in fridge pots. Passata in glass jars.

Tomatoes, tuna, baked beans and sardines and a tin of Heinz vegetable soup for quick lunches (but you need to add lots of black pepper) I also have a little glass jar of anchovies, they are good on pizzas and added to lamb joints with garlic.

I grew up think that cucumber was square.
It was the way my mum peeled and cut it ?
Bless her ❤️

About the same as everyone else.
Someone we knew in France was renovating an old farmhouse and found a stache of tinned foods . Not sure what date but at least WW2.
They decided to risk it and found a tin of perfectly preserved french runner beans.

PinkCakes Thu 01-Jul-21 20:17:05

Tins in my cupboard:
baked beans, chopped tomatoes, pears, custard, rice pudding, tuna, soups, salmon, sweetcorn.

Callistemon Thu 01-Jul-21 19:35:20

We just ate the tin of corned beef in a hash.

Now, if we're short of food in a month's time I shall wonder if I did the right thing or should have hoarded it!

Liz truss is telling us that tinned fruit and veg are daisy fesh at the time of being tinned so we must start to get used to tinned fruit and custard like after the war.Mmmmm.Brexit soooo much to love.

She is right, tinned fruit has more nutrients than fresh stuff sitting on shelves for weeks at a time,Programme on Channel 5 with Sian Williams Secrets of Your Supermarket Food, also cheaper for people on low incomes. Have always had tinned food in the cupboard, even during EU membership, and am still getting fresh stuff, if no British equivalent available, from Holland, Poland and Spain. The shortage of tinned tomatoes will be due to China (again) buying up global steel supplies. Just in case you wanted to blame Brexit for that too.

Beans (baked, kidney, butter and borlotti), chickpeas, lentils green and red, sweetcorn, tuna, coconut milk, soup (tomato, chicken, mushroom), tomatoes galore, corned beef for hash. And just for me, grapefruit segments and tinned rice pudding which I’ve just rediscovered. Cocoa and custard powder right at the back - I need to check the dates. smile

Callistemon Thu 01-Jul-21 17:30:08

Oh, I have a tin of corned beef, sent as a substitute in a grocery delivery. I haven't bought tinned corned beef for years but must use it soon as it could stay there for years otherwise.
