Diana’s statue

I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this odd lump of horrible coloured metal. The clothes don’t seem to suit her as I remember her but perhaps it’s just my aged recollection. Still as long as her sons are happy with it, that’s all that really matters. Is the statue going to be on public display?

MissAdventure

Mrs Doubtfire.

Very appropriate in these times!??

Mrs Doubtfire.

I don't mind the depiction of her person but the child behind her looks somewhat 'abandoned' or 'not belonging'. Can't quite grasp the point of that. It actually makes me a little bit sad.

SueDonim Thu 01-Jul-21 20:23:19

I thought it was Judy Murray! It’s very severe looking. I hadn’t seen the third child, I’ll need to find a different photo.

I don’t like it as it looks masculine not at all like Princess Diana who was a natural beauty.

The telegraph’s article was as scathing as your Guardian article NotSpaghetti

JaneJudge

At least she wasn't a slave owner and the only criticism is that of a vacuous nature about how it looks. She wont be thrown in the sea

So true.

I don't like it though. The random children are a distraction for a start. Also there are so many iconic photographs of Diana in natural poses wearing timeless outfits.

She looks like a gym mistress shepherding a couple of kids in this statue. It doesn't do her justice at all.

JaneJudge your pithy wit always makes me laugh

I think maybe the wrong sculptor was chosen - it lacks fine lines and is clunky looking.

Gingster Thu 01-Jul-21 19:34:01

I must say I am a bit disappointed. I don’t know what I was expecting but it isn’t a good likeness.
Wouldn’t it have been nicer if the children had been William and Harry as small boys.

Rosarie Thu 01-Jul-21 19:24:00

What is the point of the third hidden child , in all of the photos I’ve seen you can only see the third child’s legs , you can’t tell if it a girl or a boy !

This says it all for me:

www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2021/jul/01/the-diana-statue-ian-rank-broadley-sculpture

My husband says it's "severe and lifeless".

lemsip Thu 01-Jul-21 18:45:30

I like it. I didn't expect to see one of her smiling in an occasion dress. This is a forever statue of Diana Princess of Wales ,mother of a future King and Prince Harry.

Mollygo Thu 01-Jul-21 18:38:03

I think it’s a great statue. It doesn’t particularly look like her, it isn’t in a nice looking material-I hope no birds perch on it, but it ‘aims to convey her character and compassion, so a statue of a women with children will do that fine.

25Avalon Thu 01-Jul-21 18:37:28

I thought it looked better sideways on. More like Diana and you could see all 3 children.

Calendargirl Thu 01-Jul-21 18:26:31

As Dilly said, a nice smile would have made all the difference, it doesn’t look like her somehow.

Kandinsky Thu 01-Jul-21 18:24:41

She looks like a man.

seacliff Thu 01-Jul-21 17:37:11

I just saw the statue of her and Dodi that was at Harrods after her death. I know it was very over the top, and tacky, but in my opinion, the face actually looked a bit more like her, and it showed her slim figure. www.diomedia.com/stock-photo-dodi-and-diana-statue-unveiled-at-harrods-image17396407.html

Kestrel Thu 01-Jul-21 17:26:08

Face seems to be the wrong shape - not rounded enough for the chin? Bit of a shame after all that build-up

BBbevan Thu 01-Jul-21 17:18:09

DH thinks she looks like Fiona Bruce !

DillytheGardener Thu 01-Jul-21 17:11:22

I think Diana would have been better depicted in marble as it has a more luminous quality than bronze. I think her face looks hard, and the arms, heads, proportions and poses of the children look awkward. I can’t stand the outfit of hers they chose to use. Of all her outfits why that one! The belt is far too in your face.

Also Diana SMILED when she was around children, where is her beautiful smile that could light your heart in and instant?

MissAdventure Thu 01-Jul-21 17:08:13

It's very austere.
I wanted to see her looking like a radiant princess..

eazybee Thu 01-Jul-21 17:04:19

No; don't like it.
The garden is so pretty, I think the statue spoils it.

Bluebellwould Thu 01-Jul-21 17:04:02

It’s also showing rather a lot more cleavage than Diana showed in the above photo.
