The Times is reporting that although the Queen, her late husband the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles had previously agreed that the title DoE would eventually pass to Edward, Prince Charles the current DoE is not now intending to pass the title on to his younger brother when he becomes king.
Any ideas what that is all about?

I don't want a republic. Unless we get Queen Meghan, that is.

So you do want to have a say on who your head of state would be?

Aw, thanks Lemongrove. We won't waste any more time then discussing something you don't think is worthwhile. Grateful for the heads up. ?

Since it seems unlikely there is enough support for Scottish Independence ( if there ever is another referendum on it) I think the question of keeping the monarchy or not is a moot one.

I've no idea what an independent Scotland would do about anything, Trisher. They are unlikely to ask my advice.

But you seem quite happy to tell them they must still have a monarch Elegran. I just wondered if that was true.

There's no suggestion at the moment that an independent Scotland would move away from being a constitutional monarchy, with the Queen as HoS.

I've been quite surprised, actually, that some people think an independent Scotland would automatically "get rid" of the Queen, that's not the intention at all.

However, I was born in a unionist monarchy and hope to finish my days in an independent republic. wink

It is difficult, I agree. smile
No, seriously, that is a good point.
They're ok, it's the others.

Anniebach Mon 12-Jul-21 18:33:33

I just don’t see Charles, Anne and Edward as celebrities

MissAdventure Mon 12-Jul-21 18:27:51

I would like to see them downgraded so they're more like normal people, instead of (not very glamorous - apart from Meghan- celebs)

nadateturbe Mon 12-Jul-21 18:24:58

Not a one TanaMa. I find that hard to believe.

Alegrias1 Mon 12-Jul-21 18:24:38

Oohhh, that's original.

All our arguments negated, then.

TanaMa Mon 12-Jul-21 18:02:43

To those who would like to see the Monarchy banished - who would you see as President?? Personally there is absolutely ZERO people, of any gender, colour, religious pursuit etc that I would be happy to see as President. Perish the thought - e.g. Trump, Biden!!??

MissAdventure Mon 12-Jul-21 17:21:35

Oh. Reigned. Rained.
Whatever

MissAdventure Mon 12-Jul-21 17:19:39

I don't want to be resigned over.

Long may they reign over us!
Speak for yourself!!!

trisher Mon 12-Jul-21 16:54:55

So would an independent Scotland then put the monarchy to the people and let them vote on that? The Republic of Scotland has a nice ring to it.

JaneR185 Mon 12-Jul-21 16:51:20

I think the work the RF does is often unrecognised. They are figureheads, leaving politicians to run the country, provide continuity, while PMs come and go, advise PMs, host visiting dignitaries, award members of the public for their contributions, charity work, etc, etc. I think they add value to the UK. Long may they reign over us!

Elegran Mon 12-Jul-21 16:42:40

There is no need to "offer" Edward or anyone else to Scotland. They will still have a monarch. Whoever succeeds to the throne of the United Kingdom is the king or queen, equally and separately, of England and Scotland. That is the meaning of the name - the United Kingdom. If Scotland should become independent, that wouldn't alter the succession of the next monarch.

coastalgran Mon 12-Jul-21 16:38:25

Once Prince Charles checks history he will find out that his Scottish title Duke of Rothesay is better than the one his father had bestowed on him when he married the Queen he will probably give it to his little brother. What big brother hasn't passed on the lesser or not so interesting gift, toy to his wee brother and kept the best for himself.

Would you prefer PresidentTrump,Presiden Blair or some such other idiot as a figure head for the country?Give me the Royal Family anytime.

Lost count of how many times that exact question has been asked in these threads.

Chaitriona Mon 12-Jul-21 16:29:18

Now Harry and Andrew are out, there is a lack of adult male royals so more light is shining on Edward. An idea has been discussed in the press that he could be offered to Scotland in some form or other. If Scotland should become independent I get the impression that the palace are keen an independent Scotland should still be a constitutional monarchy under the house of Windsor. I do not think there is much interest in Edward up here though. Princess Anne however supports Scottish rugby and is often up here. Her second marriage was in Scotland as was her daughter’s. Her down to earth personality is attractive to Scots. However she is the only one of the Queen’s children who refused titles for her own children and said they would not be royal. So the very things that are attractive in her are what rule her and her family out. I imagine Scots are pretty divided between monarchists and republicans, as people in England are. I myself believe nobility is a matter of character, not birth.

I like the royals but it time now to start reducing that numbers stop all the Duke of this and that it should only be Charles then William all the rest especially harry should be just plain mr

The title should go when Charlie becomes king, I'm not a royalist, nothing against the current ones, except AirmilesAndy and MEEgain & Hapless, but it is time to wind it all down. Too much privilege to a few, especially if you read the history of how it all began

Agreed!
