Is this the most agonisingly cringeworthy thing ever ?!

Spot on

‘Getting out more’ is such a lazy and offensive trope
While Lucca was justified in sharing her ‘getting out’ credentials; how on Earth does ‘getting out’ equal good judgement and/or intelligence?
It’s a meaningless reply

MoorlandMooner Sun 11-Jul-21 16:58:02

I find it cringeworthy, though not as cringeworthy as his voting record, his filibustering or that it appears he has personally made an estimated £7 million from the Brexit he helped drive through.

These guys treat parliament like their own personal playground with their lounging around, making feeble jokes and blithering on about football....and what do we do? We compliment them on their diction and argue amongst ourselves.

Sad really.

'Is this the most agonisingly cringeworthy thing ever ?!'

If you truly think so, Lucca, then:
1. You appear to have lived a sheltered life, and
2. Perhaps you should get out more.

I'm with Callistemon and JenniferEccles on this.

How do you define sheltered? I’ve only lived and worked in four countries /speak four languages /have taught in inner city and leafy suburb schools / have travelled alone through the USA, flown alone to Australia four times/ have experienced and survived cancer, but if that is sheltered, so be it.

This week I’ve been out for lunch twice played two tennis matches two games of bridge and visited two friends, so maybe I should get out more.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 11-Jul-21 16:21:46

Oh his speech is definitely an affectation.

Tells you everything really.

I'm now wondering why the OP listened to that clip at all. I'm tending to conclude that she just needed to let some hate political dislike out. Sad really.

I listened because it was sent to me.
Again it’s not flipping political as I said it was embarrassing and would have been if done by many politicians if any party.

Your conclusion is wrong.

Alegrias1 Sun 11-Jul-21 11:19:45

I don't have any issue with JRM's speaking voice, it's that he thinks that regurgitating a rap in RP is funny confused.

I actually find this more cringeworthy: "The bands of blighters bringing illegal entrants to Blighty will be broken up by this brilliant borders bill."

How frightfully droll.

It all depends on how we view a certain public figure doesn’t it?
If we have for instance taken a strong dislike to someone, often everything they do or say irritates us, and that’s probably the case here.

JRM is a one off isn’t he?
I respect his calm measured, polite responses even under extreme provocation.

Some people seem to see a self deprecating comedian, I see a vile bigoted creature who talks posh. Received pronunciation and fancy names for your (numerous) children don't necessarily mean you are a decent human being.

Bigoted creature, do you describe yourself as that also,?what a nasty post, why bring his childrens names into it. If people criticise people's choice of childrens name that are considered chavvy, they would quite rightly be called snobbish.

I think there is inverted snobbery here, if someone, quite wrongly, said the same about someone who perhaps is not so educated and did not speak with a well spoken accent, people would get upset about it.

Someone like Priti Patel, maybe?

Shinamae Sun 11-Jul-21 11:08:22

I see nothing wrong with it at all,the fact that he was self-deprecating, I actually appreciated that…. So many quick to cast stones….

Some of us can stomach Mr Collins, and some of us can’t, that’s what it comes down to. I really don’t think insulting each other and implying that people who disagree with you have led narrow lives is true or justifiable,

No, not cringeworthy. If you don't object to the words of the song, why object to someone saying them? Seems a lot of you have lived very narrow lives. Or are inverted snobs.

^Like Johnson, he thinks that being a parliamentarian is just a jolly jape.^

I haven't listened but I do know people (several) who live in his constituency and say he is a good constituency MP (even though some admit they didn't vote for him!)

That’s good to hear

To be fair to RM (through gritted teeth!) like Becket, I have seen him remain calm and composed under very challenging circumstances (I think that he was being harangued by a small crowd; I’m sure that someone will recall the full story).

Lin52 Sun 11-Jul-21 10:43:52

He was educated in exactly the same place at the same time as many of his political contemporaries, and yet he chooses to adopt a cadence and pronunciation style of a deliberately antediluvian and mannerly nature. It’s an affectation. His speech is deliberately affected for attention, in exactly the same way as the Kardashians’ speech is. This is why people mock him. It is transparently inauthentic.

Yer aweright innit, dunno really, expresso, gern ta, ger inta. Some examples for you to even things up. JRM is articulate, intelligent extremely good at laughing at himself, can demolish an argument precisely. I know who I would rather listen to. Who are you to say his speech is deliberately affected, know him well ? Sick and tired of people saying anyone who speaks precisely, eloquently and doesn’t drop their aitches is worthy of ridicule. At least people can understand every word he says.

Casdon Sun 11-Jul-21 10:42:42

People don’t laugh at him because he has an educated voice JenniferEccles, or because he’s a Tory in government, it’s his personal attributes that they laugh at. His attempts at humour never come off, that’s the issue, and he sets himself up as a figure of fun as he has so many affectations. Anybody who affects being posher than their background would suggest, and dresses their child as a ‘mini-me’ is fair game - Austin Powers anyone?

Callistemon Sun 11-Jul-21 10:41:33

If Jess Phillips is friendly with him then he must be ok grin

The You tube video of Rees-Mogg showing her around his constituency is worth a watch too.

Callistemon Sun 11-Jul-21 10:36:03

Double yes. What a vile voice that man has.

Why?

He speaks clearly and distinctly, unlike so many these days who can't pronounce words correctly and mumble.

Anyone could speak clearly and distinctly with any kind of accent, it's the mumbling and lack of clarity now which is so annoying.

I have to put on sub-titles quite often and no, I'm not deaf.

I watched an episode of Unforgotten the other evening and the only actor who didn't mumble was Kevin McNally.

Lucca Sun 11-Jul-21 10:31:26

JenniferEccles

Why is it considered funny to sneer at a politician with a well spoken, educated voice?

Why? I don’t understand it.
Yes I accept he is part of the Conservative government so considered fair game but why particularly target the fact that he is well spoken?

Would you prefer them all to speak in, for example, Estuary English ?

JRM has always been self deprecating, not afraid to laugh at himself, and of course in this instance he was well aware of how incongruous it would sound but he did it anyway.

Ok fine. I have explained but to no avail. It was embarrassing. It would probably have been just as bad if Keir Starmer had done it or Diane Abbott or indeed me but if you all choose to take it the wrong way so be it.

Luckygirl Sun 11-Jul-21 10:30:26
