During the last election I listened to a radio debate between JRM and the other candidates for his parliamentary seat - whilst the others were shouting each other down JRM remained calm, polite, good humoured and completely demolished all their arguments

He was educated in exactly the same place at the same time as many of his political contemporaries, and yet he chooses to adopt a cadence and pronunciation style of a deliberately antediluvian and mannerly nature. It’s an affectation. His speech is deliberately affected for attention, in exactly the same way as the Kardashians’ speech is. This is why people mock him. It is transparently inauthentic.

Why is it considered funny to sneer at a politician with a well spoken, educated voice?

Why? I don’t understand it.
Yes I accept he is part of the Conservative government so considered fair game but why particularly target the fact that he is well spoken?

JRM has always been self deprecating, not afraid to laugh at himself, and of course in this instance he was well aware of how incongruous it would sound but he did it anyway.

JRM actually has a great dry sense of humour and has no problem taking the p out of himself. He was hilarious on have ^I Got New for You' with some of his bone dry comments. He rarely smiles when delivering them. Not everyone will find him funny but each to their own. There are lots of comedians I find absolutely awful.
