Reading Gransnet I read many comments that are cringeworthy. As someone who has English as a second language let me tell you no one learning English wants to end up with any type of regional accent. Received Pronunciation may not be popular on this site but at least the listener can understand what words are being used even if the meaning goes over your head.

Huge difference between speaking with no regional accent and how JRM speaks. However as I’ve pointed out many many times that was not the point I was making.I thought it was embarrassing toe-curling etc due to the delivery. Would have been just as awful done by many politicians of any persuasion. I give up

I remember travelling on a ferry to France years ago and the woman who made the announcements in English over the tannoy sounded as if she was French, with a distinct French accent, but was speaking English with a very strong Lancashire accent.

I only use it when on a cruise, MerylStreep where, of course, one requests a stateroom on the port side going out to the Orient and a starboard stateroom when returning to one's home country.
