The motto I’ve found most helpful to me in my life has been this -
Waste Not Fresh Tears Over Old Griefs.
( Euripides)
When I’m feeling sorry for myself and find my past mistakes and personal sorrows overwhelming me, this is what I say to myself to drown them out.
What is your personal motto that’s helped you in the tougher times of your life ?

DanniRae - I like that. I’ve just copied it into my planner. ?

Oopsadaisy I love yours. So much I looked up the origins of the first one. It sounded like Dr Johnson but proved to be by a man called Augusten Burroughs, alive and flourishing and with a life that explains it. ://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augusten_Burroughs

Laugh and the whole world laughs with you.
Cry and you cry alone.

I composed the following when I was dreading going to the funeral of someone very dear to me:-

"It will come and it will go,
Whether fast or whether slow,
But one thing that I surely know,
Is, it will come and it will go....."

It helped me and it has helped me since.

I was relentlessly bullied by a manager in the NHS which finally, sadly, ended my career. It took a long time to regain any confidence and get back to a happier life, after missing my job, patients and lovely colleagues so much. But I now think the little mantra of... when I am walking down the lane in the sunshine with my dogs she's in an office, stressed out and driving a computer. Sad sod!
It puts the value of life into a better perspective. Always helps!!

"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"

That was a favourite of my Dad's. Thanks for the reminder.

FranA Thu 15-Jul-21 17:16:41

If you can’t say anything nice, keep your mouth shut.

Jules1960 Thu 15-Jul-21 11:44:46

How true.
Worked with two women who were not nice to me any arrangements made to go out outside of work I was never invited, never acknowledged my birthday, never acknowledged my dad dying, since we have been made redundant they want to be friends and go out.
Ps any new starter to the company invited out and birthday celebrations were order of the day.

Carpe diem.
Twice a diem if possible. smile

Lazy people work hardest!

(Think of how many times you’ve thrown something across a room aiming for the bin and it misses, making a mess!)

Peff68 Thu 15-Jul-21 10:33:32

These are all brilliant. Mine is ‘what goes around comes around’

Have good day all

Rosiebee - so glad you are recovering now . That’s NOT a motto anyone wants to have ! ???

MissAdventure Thu 15-Jul-21 08:09:32

That's quite a catchy motto.
I can imagine it on cushion covers and wall plaques. smile
I'm going to adopt it.

Two months ago, following a bladder operation, I came home fitted with a catheter. This was in place for 11 days and I can honestly say it was physically the worst thing I have ever experienced. I was so miserable. Now when I am in any negative situation, my mantra is "At least I don't have a catheter". It was a horrible time but I feel it's made me a better person and constantly reminds me to be grateful for my physical freedom and to appreciate what some people face on a daily basis.

What price you're peace of mind - absolutely priceless.

It took me a (very) long time to learn this.

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar !

I haven’t got any mottoes that have ever helped with life’s worries and struggles tbh ( or any that have cheered me up, come to that.)
I do like some of the amusing ones on this thread though, and will add...
Always walk a mile in someone else’s shoes....that way you’ll be a mile away when they discover they’re missing.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Caitlin

Me too. ❤️ ? ? ?

Sorry something went wrong.

gillyjp Wed 14-Jul-21 21:12:09

Oh and my motto especially when I go clothes shopping? 'You're a long time dead'

gillyjp Wed 14-Jul-21 20:58:43

My dear old Dad used to say 'You never miss the water till the well runs dry' Wise words indeed

HurdyGurdy Wed 14-Jul-21 20:39:33

If you've nothing good to say, say nothing at all.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

Do as you would be done by.

Sawsage2 Wed 14-Jul-21 20:33:26

Love many, trust few
And always paddle your own canoe.
