Have to say I’m loving every minute, my bones love it too, pity it’s so short lived, it will be peeing it down again soon!
My top tips, wear as little as possible, cotton or linen, drink loads, I have been known to water down the gin, not often tho.
I do find generally people are much more cheerful and friendly when the sun shines
I spent the weekend in London, now that was hot, I had a great time, as so seemed everyone else.

Like most people I don’t like extremes of temperature, hot or cold but I do find very cold weather easier to cope with than this oppressive heat.

When it’s bitterly cold I wrap up warmly and I’m fine. The heating gets turned up at home so all’s well indoors too.

It’s difficult to escape this heat though isn’t it? The car of course with the air con on is the place to be, or supermarkets, but I can’t spend my days doing that.

I do all I can by following the rules of closing windows and curtains on the sunny side of the house, and only opening windows when it’s cooler and shady. It’s still too hot though.
Maybe I’ll invest in one of the fans described on here.
Then of course the weather will change.

BlueBelle obviously not just ageing. I guess thyroid , hormones, ailments and medication etc. So those of us who have these issues are only stating how we are feeling during a heatwave. You are lucky and believe me I used to love the hot weather home or abroad, I would be sightseeing when only ‘mad dogs and Englishmen’ were out!

Teacheranne Mon 19-Jul-21 12:30:53

I’m lucky in that I prefer heat to cold weather! But I don’t have to do a great deal so can just sit around either outside in the shade or near a fan if indoors. I don’t even try to go to sleep until very late, I read in bed until my eyes are very tired, switch off the fan and fall asleep straight away.

So today I’m wearing a sundress and not much else, have been pottering around making a few phone calls, sending emails and reading. All I need to do later is a bit of tidying up, empty the dishwasher and water my pots which I will do just before it goes dark. No cooking, got cold chicken and salad for tea.

But if I had to go out shopping or clean the house then I might not be so relaxed. My cleaner and lawn mowing service are both due tomorrow so I’ll make sure I have jugs of cold water in the fridge ready.

Gosh, my life is rather boring, my social life has still not returned to pre pandemic levels unfortunately so I’m at home more than I like but at least I can enjoy this glorious weather.

BlueBelle Mon 19-Jul-21 12:20:43

It’s not an ageing thing for everybody because I still love the heat the more the better I m rarely too hot and still have my duvet tucked over my head at night
I feel the cold more as I ve got older
I just wish people would stop moaning we have about one hot week a year and constant moaning and groaning… but we suffer about 50 grey, wet, damp, cold, windy, weeks which is so flipping depressing

Sara1954 Mon 19-Jul-21 12:16:47

The only pleasant place is in my car with the air con blasting out.

Grandma70s Mon 19-Jul-21 12:09:03

I am looking forward to winter, except I suppose at my time of life it isn’t good to wish time away. I am miserable all the time when it’s hot.

My son gave me a small electric fan which has a water tank at the top. You fill it up and then the fan gives out cool water vapour. It’s very cooling, but I have to move away from it sometimes!

3nanny6 Mon 19-Jul-21 11:57:06

This heat is too much and although I don't want to moan all I
hope for is some cooler weather. It is boiling outside and boiling inside. Every top tip to cool the inside of the house has not worked and I am taking so many showers my skin is becoming sore. Let us have some rain something to cool the place down.

OnwardandUpward Mon 19-Jul-21 11:52:29

True about the wet flannel on the back of the neck! I put mine in the freezer first as well and that worked a treat!

Frozen raspberries are good to cool you down as is cucumber chunks. If you have high BP, eating a banana can help in hot weather because of all the potassium that's lost through sweat.

Sara1954 Mon 19-Jul-21 11:38:34

I hate to moan, as I hate the cold, and don’t look forward to winter, but it’s so draining, I
Just haven’t got the energy for anything.

sorry i didnt realise there was already a posting about HEAT.

Travelsafar where’s the other thread about heat? I haven’t seen it.

Marmight Mon 19-Jul-21 11:18:39

A cold flannel on the back of the neck helps and lots if hydration. I have chunks of water melon in the fridge which are very refreshing. After a very hot tea party under a tree in the garden yesterday I’m staying indoors. What to do? The tax return, sorting out the mess in my bedroom or some painting ?. I think the latter will win

ElderlyPerson Mon 19-Jul-21 10:58:50

I could not sleep.

Watching YouTube videos around 2 am .

Sara1954 Mon 19-Jul-21 10:56:19

Just to clarify, not a swimming pool, just an above ground pool, if it was a swimming pool I might have been tempted!

Chewbacca Mon 19-Jul-21 10:56:05

I know exactly how you feel travels; this intensity of heat just does me in. Listless, lethargic and dripping with sweat; just makes me feel eurgh! Thank goodness I'm not going anywhere special because the humidity has made my hair look like I've been plugged into a substation!

Sara1954 Mon 19-Jul-21 10:54:09

I agree, I used to love it, but I spent all day yesterday under a tree with a book, while the rest of the family splashed in the pool, I couldn’t even water the garden till gone nine o clock, exhausted!

Witzend Mon 19-Jul-21 10:53:14

If you’re sweating a lot, it could be a lack of salt - a dirty word now I know, but we used to live in very hot climates where very high humidity was sometimes also a factor, and salt tablet dispensers were routinely dished out to families.

Many years after we’d moved back to the U.K. we were on holiday in Darwin, Australia, at a terribly humid time of year - I was almost wringing my hair out after 20 minutes out of doors, and soon started to feel terribly tired.

There were frequent exhortations to drink plenty of water but no mention of salt - as I said, it’s a dirty word now.

But having belatedly remembered the salt tablets we used to take, when we went for lunch (buffalo pie or quiche with chips!) I put plenty of salt on my chips and felt so much better soon afterwards.

Grandmadinosaur Mon 19-Jul-21 10:48:48

Another one here who doesn’t cope well with heat.

tanith Mon 19-Jul-21 10:47:27

travelsafar are drinking enough it’s easy to get dehydrated when it’s so hot and your ability to regulate body temperature declines very quickly when dehydrated and getting older. I have plenty of drinks and keep a water bottle by my side all day sipping from it regularly.
I hope you manage to keep cooler today ?

BlueSky Mon 19-Jul-21 10:44:06

Same here Travelsafar. It’s got to be an effect of ageing, also some medication a lot of older people are on, like BP tablets, as I do. I can’t wait for this hot spell to pass even if I sound ungrateful.

timetogo2016 Mon 19-Jul-21 10:44:02

No need to apologise travelsafar,we all make mistakes.

travelsafar Mon 19-Jul-21 10:40:22

travelsafar Mon 19-Jul-21 10:39:22

Yesterday my dear daughter came to lunch and after she had gone i couldnt do anything but sit in an armchair with the windows wide open and the curtains closed to stem the heat of the day. I was so flaked out!!!!
This morning i feel the same it is so humid and i have to go to the physio and really dont want to leave the house.
Why is it as we get older heat affects us so much?
I can remember being outside in the hottest weather when younger and loving it now i am like a snail and curl up indoors till it passes.
It makes me nauseaous, feel weak and i have no energy to do anything.
