Mental laziness

Is my brain seizing up due to old age? I just cannot be bothered any more. I reach for the calculator for the easiest sum, I give up half way through articles because they require too much concentration.

OH and I have always had discussions over breakfast about things in the news - this morning it was about the shape of the earth. It is an ellipsoid. I had to look it up and gave up reading the explanation as it was too hard for my brain!

Does anyone else get like this?

I’m blaming it all on lockdown. The world seemed to grind to a halt and my enthusiasm and interest slowed down too.
I also think that getting older, knowing we are not going to be here forever, we sometimes don’t have the patience to ponder complexities and just move on to something easier and more enjoyable.

Another one here feeling the same. I have a huge pile of books to get through but can’t be bothered with those even. I listened to a couple of audio books during the first lockdown and think I read 1 actual book but no nada nothing more. Lockdown has a lot to answer for.

I am the same on GN. When I see a long post I can't be bothered to read it although I have all the time in the world!

GagaJo Fri 23-Jul-21 11:36:51

I blame the internet. I browse so much and waste so much time on it. It's affected my concentration.

BlueSky Fri 23-Jul-21 11:38:06

Same here. If you want me to read your posts on Facebook keep it short! Some people write essays! Same with articles too long or complex I just skim. No longer do even the easiest of sums. Just can’t be bothered anymore.

Also, it’s too easy to just google something, you don’t have to think any more.

How to spell a word, you looked in the dictionary.

Need information about a topic, you looked it up in an encyclopaedia or went to the library.

Trying to recall a song or an actor’s name. You fretted about it for ages, pestered people to try and recall it for you, now it’s all there at the touch of a button.

After specific life events, I can't be bothered thinking too much. I just live in the present and accept things as they are. I'd stand up against an injustice or when necessary but, for the most part, don't have the mental energy.

I can’t be bothered with links. Either say what you want to say or don’t bother as far as I’m concerned. Maybe a thread for links and then I can avoid them all?

nanasam Fri 23-Jul-21 12:32:41

I remember the days when I'd sit puzzling over a name or face and would often wake up in the middle of the night with the answer. These days I immediately ask Alexa the answer, but it can't be good for me because my brain doesn't get a workout any more!

Granmarderby10 Fri 23-Jul-21 12:45:03

shysal sorry wink and Gagajo I only opened my iPad to search out the origin of “three lions” meant to be watching the Olympic opening ceremony grin

You have made me feel better, it is comforting to know I am not the only one

Barmeyoldbat Fri 23-Jul-21 14:03:38

Complete mental fog here. Went out today, thought it was Saturday so now I am one meal behind. I have a pile of paperwork that needs sorting and putting away, can’t be bothered, I also have a pile of books to read but just don’t get around to it. Think my brain has gone into lockdown

MiniMoon Fri 23-Jul-21 14:36:33

No, not me. I read everything from start to finish. Today on Facebook someone had posted a photo of what he thought was a thunderclap. I knew it wasn't, so I researched cloud formations and found out that his cloud was in fact a stratocumulus lenticular cloud.
I try to work out maths problems, but usually resort to asking Alexa because maths never was my strong point.
DH is the one in this house with brain fog!

I'm pretty good at the sums on Countdown, but a week or so ago, I had a request from my medical practice to take my blood pressure twice a day for a week and let them have the result. I duly did this, but then realised that they had also asked me to send them the average: the average of both systolic and diastolic readings twice a day for a week! Oh I know how to do it, but why does my result come out different each time I do the sums, even with a calculator?

Rosycheeks Fri 23-Jul-21 17:26:51

Oh I am the same with long posts and links sometimes they are like essays cant be asked to read them. I think the hot weather dosn't help either. Keep it short and sweet its easier to take in.

muffinthemoo Fri 23-Jul-21 17:30:20

Lockdown and heat lassitude. I have now had the same headache for nine days. I would trepan myself if there was any evidence for it…! grin

In lockdown we have been limited to staying at home with little communication with others.

Listening to and watching the news about COVID it’s no wonder there is little interest in anything.

If there is a long thread it’s usually a big problem and someone is in desperate need for advice I will read them. If I don’t feel I can advise I send good wishes.

I find my concentration isn't as good. I do some of the puzzles in the 'i' newspaper and realised I had stopped doing the ones that require more effort, so now I am making myself do them. Now if I am trying to make myself read all the interesting books lined up and stop buying rubbish novels on my kindle..... My mum stopped reading as she got older. I don't want to be like that.

nadateturbe Sun 25-Jul-21 03:49:26

Correction - Now I am trying

Txquiltz Sun 25-Jul-21 04:15:49

Lockdown was bad for my concentration. I try to limit tv time, but find that hard to do. I have found word games seem to be mentally stimulating. Vision is too bad to read, alas.

I like the book recommendations on gransnet and have read a few now. I have access to a lot of free books throughProbus but many of them are hohum and not really worth reading. I can put in the titles of the ones on gransnet on the local library website and get them for 3 weeks free.

Juliet27 Sun 25-Jul-21 06:25:51

Well you’ve given my brain something to work on annodomini. I looked up the following….’To calculate a mean arterial pressure, double the diastolic blood pressure and add the sum to the systolic blood pressure. Then divide by 3’
I’ll try that when I’m more awake!!

Liz46 Sun 25-Jul-21 07:02:40

I had to shield and have found that my legs have become weak. I used to enjoy yoga, so know what to do - but am I doing it - NO. I need a kick up the backside.
