Which era would you choose for clothing and decor

I would love to have been alive in the early 1900's but only if i could have been wealthy. I just love the elegance of women's clothes and the beautiful homes they had back then. Watching dramas such as Downton Abbey, Upstairs Downstairs and Testament of Youth fills me with delight. The gowns they wore, the men in evening dress and the fabrics used in their homes are a thing of beauty to me. I know those times were very hard for ordinary folk with poor health, bad housing and poverty, and that dramas do not always portrait real life, but it is nice to have a little fantasy now and then.

1960s fashion for me. I had a pair of knee high, white, patent leather boots - my absolute pride and joy - iconic 60s style. My father wouldnt let me wear them with micro short skirts, so once on the bus I had to roll the skirt waist round and round to achieve The Look. I managed to sneak out in my hot pants a few times - remember those? Mine had a matching tunic top almost as long as the shorts bit. The black eye liner was also applied on the bus - had to practice very hard - and hair vigorously back combed! Of course all of this only really looked good if you were young, which was sort of the point at the time. For interiors I actually really like Art Deco.

The 1920s but I would have to be wealthy no good living in the era if you couldn’t have an Art Deco furnished house. The beautiful clothes jewellery little handbags on chains and gorgeous bobbed hairstyles.

For me it is definitely the eighties. I was a teenager at the beginning of the decade, a student in the middle of it and got married, in my mid twenties, at the end of it. I loved the fashions of the eighties and still have some items of clothing from that time that I like to feel might one day fit me again, although the chances of that ever happening are somewhere between minimal in the extreme and none whatsoever. As far as furnishings are concerned, l have such a mixture and much of it secondhand but most of it would be seventies to nineties with what l hope is a touch to 2021.

Late 60’s early 70’s for me when I was a young carefree teenager. Mary Quant style hair and thick black eyeliner and mascara. Mini skirts knee high boots oh those were the days! Loved the pop culture and going to gigs. Not at all keen on the interior design of those times though.

I'm really happy with right now where 'anything goes' suits me fine.

@MayBee70. I agree. Wouldn’t have to worry about appearances, but I think you’d still have housework to do, after all who would get the boiled Mastodon smell out of the cave ?!!

1920 Flapper era and Art Deco buildings. My dream house is double fronted Edwardian with big sash windows and high ceilings.

Although I was a teenager in the 70's I'd pick the 1930s. The most stylist era IMHO.

1960s. We had a bright orange carpet, lime green curtains and fisherman’s nets and glass floats along the wall. I wore very-mini miniskirts and crop tops and knee high white pvc boots. I was very slim then. Life was one big drunken party, no cares, not much responsibility. Contrast with the 70 s when I was married and nearly permanently pregnant, or so it seemed.

Late 60’s and early 70’s for me, I loved wearing hot pants, mini skirts and bell bottom trousers ❤️

1890s to about 1914 for me, preferably in the Emperor Franz Joseph's Vienna.

There are several eras which had fabulous fashions for women but I loved the pre war smartness of the men, I know that some men wear smart suits now but never a hat. Having said that I would hate to wear a corset ?

mid century modern design of the 50s/ 60s/70s definitely not all naff if you could afford it - Danish furniture , Eames chairs, ladderax and string shelving, even Ercol and G Plan is still sought after have a look at eBay to see the prices they go for

Downton Abbey style for me but with modern dentistry.

vegansrock Sat 24-Jul-21 14:09:28

I have to add that my house was built in the 60s it’s full of light and I’ve tried to stick to mid century decor. It’s not all swirly brown carpets and orange curtains( though I do like a splash of orange).

MissAdventure Sat 24-Jul-21 14:38:35

My flat is an early 70s build, I think.
I have a serving hatch, artex, and orange swirls. smile
I like it.

30s, no question. Love Art Deco, have it in my apartment, clothes are fantastic. The buildings are wonderful. I would loved to have been around in the Raring Thirties.

The 60’s for me, the fashions of years ago were fine if you had maids to look after your clothes, all that hand washing and no dryers. We managed in the 60’s with little money. I remember making mini skirts with 1/2 yard of fabric, using Outdoor Girl Pink Ice lipstick, a back comb and loads of lacquer on our hair. The music was good too.

I'm a demonstrator at a living museum and regularly dress in 1910, 1920 and 1940s clothes but my favorite is when we have a 1950s day. I love the wide skirts and pretty hats and gloves.

Durga Sat 24-Jul-21 16:09:02

Definitely now. I love from freedom from restrictive rules of fashion. I was born in 1941. If I could pick I would be born 10 years later at least. There is so much information available today.

Aveline Sat 24-Jul-21 16:42:09

Arts and Crafts movement style decor and Edwardian clothing to match. Upper class of course! Ladies maid to look after me and a houseful of staff to keep the place running.

paperbackbutterfly I want your job!!!! I love dressing up.

Modernist and Art Deco architecture and decor, and 30s for fashion, so elegant.

Kryptonite Sat 24-Jul-21 17:07:02

I love the Downton clothes too. I once saw them on display in the Bath Museum of Fashion and couldn't believe how tiny the waists were. Would definitely have a problem with that. But so elegant.

Oh, me too! Though I said I would rather stay in the present era than live in any other, I’d love to be able to pop in and out of others like that!
