Which era would you choose for clothing and decor

I would love to have been alive in the early 1900's but only if i could have been wealthy. I just love the elegance of women's clothes and the beautiful homes they had back then. Watching dramas such as Downton Abbey, Upstairs Downstairs and Testament of Youth fills me with delight. The gowns they wore, the men in evening dress and the fabrics used in their homes are a thing of beauty to me. I know those times were very hard for ordinary folk with poor health, bad housing and poverty, and that dramas do not always portrait real life, but it is nice to have a little fantasy now and then.

I love the comfort of today’s clothes but it would be nice to pop back to the late sixties - mid seventies, my teenage years, and wear the fashions I wasn’t allowed to then ?. I’d go to see my favourite bands as well (another thing I wasn’t allowed to do), instead of waiting nearly 20 years before attending my first concert.

Oh to be a wealthy Ewardian in that last golden summer before WW1, living in my dream home, a stone bayed Victorian or Edwardian house, with a balcony overlooking Regents Park. . The clothes of the 1920's are my favourites - beautiful fabrics, smooth lines, elegant shoes. Not much fun in either decade if you were poor though - the hapless individuals who cleaned those houses or stitched those clothes didn't have a good life. But this is a fantasy question!

Hear hear! Totally agree. I absolutely love the clothing from 1910 to 1920- but l wish there had never been a war. I also love 1930's and 1940's women's clothing because it was the golden age of home dressmaking and women made clothes to fit themselves, rather than having to think they ' ought' to be taller, thinner, more bosomy etc.
As regards home decor, l think a mix of new , old and antique looks great. But most homes look cluttered. And space is very, very expensive...

1920’s for me as long as I had enough money to enjoy it. Just love Art Deco and the fashion!

Elvis58 Sat 24-Jul-21 19:17:59

Art deco for me!

grannybuy Sat 24-Jul-21 20:07:51

Art Deco era for the home, and 20’s - 30’s for clothes. I admit, we’re probably more comfortably dressed nowadays, but maybe to the extent that we lack style.

i was born in 63 and left school in 79, i loved high heels and pencil skirts with the split at the side, i also wore stockings and suspenders, by the late 80s i was wearing twin sets, i would go to all the jumble sales i could find, i know they were meant for older women but i loved them, i still have the skirt i got married in 30 years ago and still wear it for funerals. now it is joggers and tops because of severe psoriasis in my legs. i loved the split skirts and stockings as i always felt very sexy.....lol

I hadn't much time - or cash - to think about dress, though I recall several dresses and skirts well above the knee and chunky shoes, suitable for pram pushing. Our first house had more than its fair share of orange. We bought plain pine kitchen units and proceeded to paint them orange! Wallpaper in the dining room had big orange flowers and at the french window - you've guessed it: burnt orange curtains! When the white baby towels looked dingy - need I say what colour I dyed them?

MissAdventure Sat 24-Jul-21 22:43:35

Orange?

Only if I was a rich upper class lady! - the 1920's because I love the flapper dresses and hairstyles.

Same here.

The 1920s freed from the restriction of corsets and when short hair became fashionable.
Otherwise back to the late 1960s

I cook a chicken every two weeks mainly for the dog and I’m always looking for new recipes for chicken. I finally got round to making my first ever Coronation chicken the other day and really felt I should have dressed Abigail’s Party’ish when I ate it.

Callistemon Sun 25-Jul-21 12:20:45

I do like Coronation chicken but I'd never heard of it until the 1990s when it was one of the dishes at a christening buffet (not a royal one).

I love fashion from the 30's to the 50's, and feel fortunate enough to be able to pick and choose these days. 40's and 50's hairstyles, cars and dancing. While I love the fun of 50's decor, I wouldn't want it right through the house, maybe sticking to a cheerful and practical kitchen/diner to start my day with a smile.

nanna8 Sat 31-Jul-21 13:53:21

These days everyone dresses pretty much the same. Boring. Much better when we were young. What happened to all the eccentrics?

Ethelwashere1 Sat 31-Jul-21 13:54:39

70s for me too. I loved the glam rock and the music.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sat 31-Jul-21 14:24:33

I rather liked the 1980s for smart clothes (definitely not punk) and 'big hair' which suited me. For decor I loved the Laura Ashley sprigged wallpapers and the country cottage look of the 1970s.
The music of the 1960s and 70s was best.

Art Nouveau/Deco aesthetically lovely but for practicality and comfort today.

Georgian for me - in a wealthy family of course! I love both the architecture and the clothes of the period! Spending the days, making calls on friends (and obligatory non-friends), carriage rides, receiving calls, and invitations to Balls etc. Ladies had hobbies of writing, painting, playing the piano and singing, as well as reading. I would treat my servants kindly, of course!

I’ve been looking for a lampshade for ages to go into the living room and replace the one that is looking tired - like the ones in Downton Abbey - nice shapes and with fringe - found it!

They are Edwardian style I think.

harrigran Sun 01-Aug-21 08:54:22

The 60s, I was 14 in 1960 and teenage fashion was really taking off. I also loved the furniture of the 60s, so trendy.
